Nakaya was my grail pen and once I bought it, over 2 years ago, I never bought another fountain pen.

I'm not much for bling but if I could afford it, I might consider buying this Nakaya -

Maki-e Sumiko Portable Writer Fountain Pen 蜘蛛 Spider and Web

but $4600 is a lot out of my price range right now, probably always will be, but I think it's a beautiful pen.

Agreed, I love that pen. Which Nakaya?

Siv,

I hope you don't mind my asking a follow-up question: Where would the Densho fit into the mix?

Grew up in Tx. Austin, taught for a while on Galveston Island (UTMB), now in Minnesota. I am already beginning to miss the Texs sun as fall settles in up here.

Thanks,

Leesa

Not really sure I can help here as I don't have a Densho. It has the same nib though. I think it's longer but it may not be as wide at the widest point. Someone with better experience should chime in.

I found an old post by winedoc that has pictures of most of the major Danitrio pen bodies. Winedoc also has pictures of the different pens compared to other well known pens.

This should help.

Yes, this is VERY helpful.

Thank you, once again. Now, if you could only make up my mind for me. I am torn between a Densho, Swallow and Wisteria, or a Byakudan-nuri, lacquer over gold foil image of the Shishi.

I keep waiting for one of these pens to "declare itself" over the other - and the battle just won't be won! First the swallow, then the Shishi, then the Swallow, then the Shishi...jeepers. You'd think it was a decision whether or not to sell my house, or donate a kidney ... but I swear, its harder!

Anyhow, thanks for your help!

Leesa

I have the Byakudan-nuri Shishi. It is one of my very favorite pens, and definitely one of the most unique! I made a post about it over here.

Oooo.. THANK YOU!

Based purely on your own subjective feelings, which would you recommend for a first Dani experience - the Maki-e densho, or the Byakudan-nuri? And, did you consider the Byakudan-nuri dragon?

I love the Byakudan-nuri finish. It is absolutely gorgeous, and you don't see it very often. I will say that I love my Japanese eyedropper (I have a Mikado) because of the mechanism. I do wish the Takumis were available as eyedroppers. However, I don't have a problem with c/c pens. I like them. They are convenient and versatile. For my writing purposes, I usually don't need that huge ink capacity (when and if I do, I have other pens that will fulfill that purpose). I also like to change inks frequently, so I don't mind having to flush and refill a bit more often. I did not consider the Dragon, but only because Kevin did not have one. I think I would probably like to acquire the Dragon eventually, but I am very happy that I ended up with the Shishi. If I had to choose one, I would choose the lions. Lions are not seen as often; dragons are on lots of different pens, Japanese and otherwise.

If you want a "traditional" maki-e pen, I would go with the Swallow and Wisteria Densho. It has the unique Japanese eyedropper mechanism, and a more traditional maki-e motif. If you are looking for something that is a little bit different, that isn't seen as often, I would go with the Byakudan-nuri.

Let us all know which pen you decide on! In my opinion, you really can't go wrong with any Danitrio.
