Fully Disassembled Parker 61, Capillary Filler

I was thinking of using "Exploded 61" as the title, but that's a little misleading, I think! Still, that'd be a pretty interesting idea! And rather sad too.

Anyway, I looked around for any sorts of references for 61 repair with all the parts displayed, but to no effect. Being bored, I did what anyone would do - take apart my own 61!

Mind you, I have absolutely zero experience in repair and restoration, so basically I went in this completely blind.

DISCLAIMER: I make no claims as to the safety of all procedures. I will not be liable for any damage resulting from following the procedures, correctly or otherwise.

Basic disassembling procedure:

0. Remove cap and barrel

1. Hood removal:

1a. Boil some water, just enough to pour into a cup

1b. Once boiling, kill flame, pour into cup and let cool 10~30 seconds

1c. Dip pen into water, only up to the metal threads; do not let water touch teflon surface (no idea what that could do), swirl around for 10~30 seconds

1d. Pull out, grip section and filler with both hands and twist off firmly

1e. Repeat 1c, 1d until hood twists off cleanly.

2. Nib, Collector, Feed, O-Ring, and Capillary filler should all pull off cleanly

Reassembly procedure:

1. Slip nib, collector, filler unit back onto feed, make sure nib aligns with collector - there is a raised area to help align (refer to fig. 3, 4, 5)

2. Put nib/collector/filler/feed back through hood, align the nib with the arrow

3. Screw in metal connector; unthreaded end facing hood (refer to fig. 6)

4. Replace barrel and cap

And some more pictures for reference!

It should fit perfectly between the plastic

Nib/Feed/Filler go in first, then metal connector

Hopefully that helped in some way, because I ended up destroying a 61 hood in the process! Thankfully I had a spare, and I don't really like using the 61 anyway!

The hoods are so thin that they are very sensitive to heat. They also crack easily just trying to remove them from the filler with any pressure. Use care!

By the way what parts got destroyed in your disassembly process? I may have spares (except hoods).

I've got one that's shrunk to the point where this isn't working, but it hasn't QUITE cracked yet; the hood is griping the connector like death itself. Caveat tinkerer.

The hood itself had a pretty deep crack already (about 1/2 - 3/4 inches thick) so I guess it was only a matter of time. A shame too, it came in such an uncommon color.
