What amazing pens and so appropriate for such a deserving person! Thanks for sharing the photos--I, along with various others in this thread, will look forward to hearing your accounts of first seeing these pens when they arrive. Also, I'll look forward to your comments about how these pens write and feel in the hand. Congratulations!

I tell ya... 2 months of in-laws under one roof.... is just too much. LOL. Totally screw up my usual routine. The pens should be with you today, and hopefully they are even better in person as they often are. Enjoy the pens :-)

Beautiful! PLEASE tell me they write as fantastically as they look?

I tend to think that these pens will never see ink. These are works of art. Inking one would be like hanging the Mona Lisa in your entry way to cover an unsightly stain on your wall. These should be in a glass case with special lighting to bring out their highlights.

I like to think that these are more like a Ferrari - beautiful to look at but fun to use also. Perhaps wasted if just put up on display...

That's the great thing about Maki-e - functional art than you can carry in your pocket!

I completely agree with this. Pens will never serve their full purpose if not used.

Ah, that fresh ink on paper look!

Rest assured, the pens will be inked. I will be picking them up from the post office this afternoon after work. They tried to deliver to me early in the morning yesterday while I was at work (as usual) and I had to wait until today before I'd be allowed to pick up the pens.

I'll probably go with my initial thought of Aquamarine contract ink for the Tame-midori, and go with Heart of Darkness for the Byakudan-nuri. They will be joining my daily rotation (once I find where I stashed my pen wraps from Wanda Lo) and will be with me at work every day. Yep, they will be working.

Good for you, Kiavonne! These pens deserve to be used AND admired. I totally agree with Siv. What is more wonderful than a beautiful pen in the hand that writes like a dream?

Absolutely stunning!

There's some sort of writing on the base of the first pen (in the first picture)---what does it say?

I wasn't even aware that Danitrio would do custom pens.

I can't add to what others have said, other than they truly are special.

How much direction did you give to the artist, or did you just provide the briefest of outlines, and let him do the rest?

Congratulations... they are absolutely stunning; a very fine work indeed... hope they arrive fast (he he ... I know this experience... and in person you will need an ICU near you when you open the boxes...)

Boy, did you ever call it! I just opened the package a short time ago, and I'm sorry, but there are no more adjectives in the English language to properly describe these pens. I'm just floored with their beauty.

I'm pretty sure this is the artist's signature and the like.

I am unable to ink the pens right away, but I'll be getting some more pics up soon along with my thoughts. Right now, just... wow.

Hi, Doug.

I gave a minimal amount of instruction. What I asked Kevin for was for the first pen to have delphinium/larkspur blossoms winding around the pen, and a ladybird somewhere on the cap or wherever the artist thought it might look nice. For the second pen, I asked for simpler design, but still with the blossoms and a ladybird. I talked about it with Kevin, and we pretty much decided to give the general description and to let the artist run free with the interpretation after saying ok to the budget. I got so much more than I'd expected. I am very happy.
