I happen to own an M200 and my only regret is that I did not get a 400/600. The M200 is small and I think the loss of size with the 150 is a bigger problem than the ability to change nibs. That said you may be surprised how quickly you will want to try new nibs on your Pelikan. Expandability and the ability to upgrade is a nice touch with the M200.

The decision is yours and I am sure you will ultimately be happy with your Pelikan.

Being able to basically own multiple pens for just the cost of the nibs makes the small initial premium nothing. As far as size goes, the 200 and 400 are identical I believe. It is moving to the 600 that gives a step up in size. I believe you have 200/400, 600 and 800 as the three size groups. Anyway, I'd never give up nib interchangeability for only $25 savings.

Support the entire Constitution, not just the parts you like.

AIR

Not only are the M2XX and M4XX the same size, one can buy a M2XX body and stick an M400 nib in it.

The M6xx, as seen by the pictures, is SLIGHTLY larger than the M2xx/4xx. One can easily stick an M200/400 nib in an M600. I understand that if an M600 nib is reset deeper on the feed it can be stuck in an M200/400 and clear the cap although I do not know why one would want to do this other than if they found a M600 nib unit gratus and didn't want to pay the freight for an M600 sans nib unit.

Mr. Richard Binder's site thoroughly covers this subject.

Does the black body generally have the dark transparent ink tank or is it green?

Sometimes they are green, right. This one came used and is a few years old I think. (One chick)

The green makes it easier to see the ink level for me. --Doug

As of now I'm leaning towards the 150. I'm not sure if the extra $25 is worth the extra variety of nibs.

By all means, save your money until you can afford the extra $25 for the M200.

Is it really only $25? Whatever, get the M200 at least.

does anyone know when the new M205 models come out? Are 205s about the same size as 200?

Which new M205? They release newones periodically in different colors and such.

Yes, same size.

AIR, with there system the first digit is the size series and the third digit is the trim 0 for gold, 5 for white metals.

I think there is a more accurate post around here somewhere that describes the numbering system in detail.

Just received my black M200 EF pen in the mail today. Beautiful pen.

I'll be messing around with inks for a while before I start experimenting with different nibs.

Thanks for the help guys!

Seems you already got the M200, but I would have chimed in in support of the M150. Great pens and if you post your pens, then no it is by no means too small. BTW I have big hands (XL male glove size). I have several M150 pens, M200, M400/405, and the Niagara Falls SE (between M600 and M800 in size with a somewhat bulbous barrel) as well as a vintage 140, and the M150 pens get as much use if not more than any of the other pens. My least favorite is the Niagara falls. BTW the M150 does have interchangeable nibs it is just that the M200 and M400 are a little too big to fit in it, but there is a full line of swappable M150 nibs in EF to BB, including OM, OB and OBB nibs that can be screwed in in typical Pelikan fashion and they have the advantage of being only about $15 each (e.g. from Swisher pens) allowing you to experiment at will. The M150 nibs also fit in the M200 and larger pens.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.

I've looked at Isellpens and Swisher pens, but Swisher does not have the color I like and Isellpens are currently out of stock for the one I like.

I've been thinking about an M150 since it's about $20 cheaper. Do they only come in one color, black body and transparent green ink tank?

If the downgrade because of price is a bad idea, say so before I make a bad decision, lol.

instead of downgrading, consider the M215 as well... it has the same body as the M200 but has a less "plastic" look. Actually it costs some dollars more, but it is worth.

  • 3 years later...

I'm thinking about purchasing my first Pelikan and I have a few questions. I'm wondering if there are any places online where I can get it at the cheapest price. Also, what is the nib like? I use a Pilot Cavalier and am used to their nibs so an EF Lamy Safari looks more like a M nib for me. Does anyone have a handwriting sample with a M200?

Is this a piston filler?

Do it! I love mine! I got it from Montgomery Pens. I specifically wanted green with broad and got it under $100 from them. Yes, it's a piston filler, my first, which is a little weird for me because I feel obliged to finish the ink in it instead of re-inking as the mood takes me; I feel I might end up with a big mess if I open it and syringe out the ink.

It's a delightful pen. However, if you prefer Asian fine nibs, perhaps a sailor Sapporo or young profit might be better for you?

The 150 is smaller than the 200. They do come in more than one color.

Prices have changed a lot since I posted in 2009. I would go online to various pen retailers and do a search on ebay, if that is a route you would be willing to go. Richards Pens and isellpens.com are a couple off the top of my head that I know carry Pelikans.

Johnnyies -

I have an M200 that I would be willing to sell at a reasonable price. Its used, but very lightly - Truth be told, I'm simply using my M400 more. It would be a great way to try out a Pelikan without the higher cost of a new pen.

If interested, please let me know. BTW, this would normally be a PM, but the system tells me your messenger is somehow disabled.

Best,

Ryan
