Fountain Pens in Sydney, Australia

Parker Sonnet: I'm not aware of anyone in Australia who carries Noodler's, and I think only one store carries Private Reserve - The Pen Shop.

In Melbourne, Pen City has a very limited supply of Noodlers (Ottoman Azure and maybe a black).

Pen City is the standout location for pens in Melbourne. It used to be Tafts, but when it changed ownership it just became a shop - still a good range but not a real love of pens.

PenUltimate in the QVB, Sydney, has quite an extensive range of Noodlers, as does, I believe, Pendamonium in Adelaide.

For you Aussies in the know: Are there any interesting pens available only Down Under? I'm thinking about a great gift from the rellies, eh?

You could get a pen made from Tasmanian Oak. I dount know if they make fountain pens, but i recently received a ballpoint version as a gift. It was made from 600yr old timber. Quite a different type of pen!

Noddlers, Visconti and Herbin are available at Pepe's Papiere in Bondi Junction , Dymocks in the city also has noodlers, skrip and watermans, both carry a range of pens as well. The Pen Shop (now in the Wintergarden in O'Connel St. has private reserve plus others I can't remember.

Sheaffer, Quink, Mont Blanc, Waterman are what I can remember.

Both The Pen Shop and PenUltimate in the QVB have sets of swatches they have done themselves.

There's also a pen shop in the Chifley tower building, I think it's "The Pen Place" that used to be in the Wintergarden building now home of "The Pen Shop". Next time I'm in the QVB I'd better look much better than I have before...I've never noticed a pen shop there...

The Pen Place is now owned by the PenUltimate people.

The PenUltimate shop in the QVB is on Level 2, down near the Circular Quay end.

from my experience PenUltimate is my favourite store in sydney...i have bought about 4 pens from the QVB store. If you want good service from someone who knows what their talking about, your best bet is to go on Sunday's...there's a young sales person, who is also a FPN member (alexanderino). He is a great guy to talk to and is extremely knowledgable about the pens and inks.

I have also been to other pen shops...inlcuding the QLD Penultimate store...by far the best is Sunday at Pen Ultimate QVB...

What's the one in Chifley Tower? It was there a few weeks ago or is it now gone? I only found it from the notice on the door of where it used to be in the Wintergarden.

Regarding inks, there's also a shop on the Gold Coast with a pretty good web site and online ordering with a large range of inks called "Pen and Ink" , should google up. Have ordered from them in the past, fast and efficient. Regards Hugh

I've bought most of my Noodler's ink at the WC Penfold shop on Pitt St near Martin Plaza. They seem to have had the full range when they were first available in Australia.

They still have a pen counter, but it's quite small compared to what is was a few years ago.

Before I was interested in fountain pens, I visited Penultimate a few times and bought a couple of Fisher Space Pens. The last time I went, though, the young salesman pushed hard to get me to buy two. That's why it was the last time I went.

Our selection of pens and to a certain extent ink is adequate. Prices however are exhorbitant. Compare Australian prices with Californian prices and we are being ripped off. The Australian agents have never passed on the benefits of the high Australian dollar rate of exchange. Furthermore they charge high handling fees to process faulty pens being sent back to the principal agent or manufacturer which are more than send the product yourself or dealing with overseas pen shops.

Oh so +1.

Pen City, for example, has quite a large selection of upper-range pens from makers such as Waterman, Sheaffer and Caran d'Ache - the only problem is that they can cost several hundred dollars more than buying from the US. I try to support them by buying ink from there (1 bottle of Noodler's for $25 is about the same as $12.50 + shipping from the US) but I can't see myself buying pens from them. They do have quite a good stock of Rhodia if that interests anyone.

There used to be Pen-Ultimate in three locations :QVB 455 George Street; Chifley Plaza; 100 Miller Street Northpoint Plaza.

They used to have everything from Mont Blancs to Pelikanos.

Have a look at www.pensdeluxe.com.au

If you buy a bulk amount it is actually cheaper to buy Noodler's ink from the US. The Goulet Pen Company give 5-10% off for purchases greater than 8? and if you type FPN into their discount field you will get another 5% off.

Agree with all the sentiments raised here. It is so expensive to buy any mid to high range pens that you are better off just getting them from the US and courier over as well as take the risk of getting a dud that you might have to return. I try to support the B&M stores buy buying ink and some pens from them ( i have bought a Lamy Al-star and a noodle's Ahab) but overwhelmingly I buy from overseas (an get ink at the same time).

Another thing that ticked me off was the lack of service provided by agents. I bought a Lamy 2000 from overseas recently had some issues initially with the pen so I called up the local representative and they told me it would cost me $45 + plus postage and handling to look at the pen! Plus any parts and labour that was not deemed to be a manufacturing fault. Needless to say I declined their offer and after acquiring a loupe and some nib tuning tips on FPN I was quickly able to get the slightly misaligned tines aligned and it is one of my best writers now.

One significant store you forgot to mention are the OFFICEWORKS (im sure they have them in Sydney?). They usually only have cheap, school fountain pens (either Reflex or Jotter FP).

Regarding Officeworks, they got rid of their fine writing section - that was about 3 years ago. I wish I knew then what I know about pens now - they had massive discounts on all their pens, but all I ended up buying was three Rotring Netwon Rollerballs. The pens were $20AU or so ($15US) - that was a screaming bargain, as even now that they are discontinued they are still about $30US. I also got three Rotring leather pouches, free with each pen and they usually cost $25AU alone.

Parker Sonnet: I'm not aware of anyone in Australia who carries Noodler's, and I think only one store carries Private Reserve - The Pen Shop.

Pen City in Melbourne carries Noodlers. So too (I think) does the Pen Place on the corner of William and Collins street.

Pen Ultimate in Sydney, T Sharp &Co in Perth and the Pen Shoppe in Brisbane which are the one group all stock a small selection of Noodlers at around $A25 per bottle. W C Penfold in Sydney and Brisbane had a fair selection of fountain pens. There used to be some good suppliers in Melbourne Tafts I think have been in business for years.Devlins the big tobaccanist in Perth are quite good also for some pens. But bear in mind prices in Australia are generally disgraceful, and we have never seen any benefit of the high exchange rate for the Australian dollar.
