Texaspenman, that is a wonderful looking seal! It took me a while to see the fish, but now I can see both. Beautiful find!

I just purchased a 19th Century Tibetan Seal, brought out of Tibet during the 1950's. I love it because it depicts two fish but also looks like a lion. Here is my new seal:

Just a side note

The pair of golden fishes are one os the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism:

"The two fish were originally symbolic of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna, but came to represent good fortune in general, for Hindus, Jain and Buddhists. Within Buddhism it also symbolises that living beings who practice the dharma need have no fear to drown in the ocean of suffering, and can freely migrate (chose their rebirth) like fish in the water."

A very nice Symbol and a very nice seal.

Would love to see the impression on wax

Oh gosh...I need to order more sealing wax.

I just have a cheap seal with my initial.

Dark red wax has looked good in the past, but I've also used gold : )

Now I want to get a more elaborate seal...

I like to mix two or three colours of wax together when I am making a seal. I use a lighter and with fast enough movements I usually dont set the wax on fire but if I do thats life and I move on.

This is my favorite seal - it's an Intaglia seal which I found out is noted for seals with tiny printing. This is from the 1800's, has a sterling silver handle. The seal is onyx with a rose in the center and the words "I will never forget thee" around the edge - when I saw it in my local vintage stationary shop I couldn't resist!

Great find, Wickwack! There is something special about the vintage seals, and this one is beautiful.

This was made with flexible (mailable) wax from www.nostalgicimpressions.com

pros: very easy to use, always makes a nice impression, mailable

cons: too opaque (as soon as it cools, it loses the shine), kinda rubberish look

Just got this Abraxas Amber sealing wax from Castle in the Air (no affiliation).

It's the best wax I've used so far.

When done, the seal looks like glass (or that kind of candy I used to eat when I was a child).

So beautiful, specially under the sunlight

Wow, I really like how that turned out! Is that wax pretty brittle?

+1. How did you get the Gold part in the wax?

The gold colour will be dry-brushed powder paint I suspect, put on with a tiny, soft brush after the wax has set but maybe while it is still warm and a little "greasy".

Not quite,

You use a golden ink pad.

Before pressing the wax, you gently press your seal against the ink pad. When you apply the seal to the wax, the ink will be transferred to the "deeper " areas.

In this case it was an accident. I didn't want the gold, The seal was dirty from a previous use.

Still haven´t tested how brittle it is

I do like the Amber wax. It looks like it would be solid. I also like the MENSA ring stamp. My son has been in MENSA for years, but being 14, we have not gotten around to getting the ring for him because, as 14 year old boys will do, he has not stopped growing. He has recently gone off to boarding school, and I am in the process of getting stationary and accessories for him. I was surprised to find out that he is one of the only kids that gets snail mail on a regular basis. My wife and I both try to write to him a couple times a week. Stationary, wax seals, some caligraphy. He says his friends are quiet impressed with his letters, and goodies. He is coming home tomorrow for the remainer of the summer. It was the first time he was away for longer than a week, and even his little brother misses him. I know his grandparents and others have sent him cards, etc., and I need to get him some stationary, or at least decent paper and envelopes to send letters and thank you notes. Any suggestions? :eureka:

perhaps boarding school is the right environment for flashing a Mensa trinket...
