I've received my signet ring about week ago.

http://oi40.tinypic.com/14uggvl.jpg

I've found that usually they cost lots of money to make. I thought I will never have one of these. I was wondering around in one of the companies which does custom signet rings facebook page. And there was a recent picture of engraved bronze sheet and the note saying that apprentice is doing grate job practising to engrave lions but it is still to early to get loose on gold for him... And I thought I would give him a go. So I offered my ring for him as a practice material. To my surprise they agreed to give it to apprentice. And after couple of weeks they send me this beauty in a nice presentation case together with original imprint on white wax, a stick of red wax, certificate and manual. And all that for free! I'm so excited about it :)

Here is the seal my 7 yr old gave me for Christmas. He's very proud of it as we have 4 dogs!

I think that's pretty darn cute, and awfully thoughtful for a 7 year old! I think he did very well in his gift giving!

I just used one of those cheap Etsy stores to have a seal made of my crest. For $23 (incl. shipping) I'm pretty happy with the result.

Next I think I might have my badge made into a seal.

Hello Friends!

I am new to the forumn and this is my very first post, so hopefully I do this correctly and the images work. I've had great fun looking at everyone's wax seals and I wanted to share mine with you. I just started getting into using wax seals towards the end of last year. Now it's become a hobbie for me and I'm starting to build my collection. Here is my family crest, which includes a mill or cog wheel (les roues de moulin). -Adam

The name "Miller" in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and a winged scarab added for fun. This is larger seal and took several attempts to get it right. Will probably use a hot wax (glue) gun next time or melt the wax in small pot on the stove.

Really like this one! Wish I had a family crest.

Kimy: Thank you very much for welcoming me! I’m excited to join the forum. I look forward to checking in periodically and seeing new and amazing wax seals here.

Sargetalon: I’m glad you like my family crest seal. It was a lot of fun to have it made. I got the crest art from Armsandbadges.com and then had Black Market Intl at Etsy create the seal. I went for a 1 ½” seal. I used it on all my Christmas cards last year, with gold wax. I had bought these nice pop-up Christmas tree cards but no one said a word about them, they all wanted to know how I did the wax seal. So that made me smile.

High quality wax seals with deep engraving and detail really seem to be a lost art. I was surprised how difficult it’s been to find good seals. Most of my seals were custom made with a laser engraver. I find there are pros and cons to laser engraving verses traditional hand carved seals or cast from mold seals. With laser engraving you can get whatever spectacular design you want and the possibilities are endless. The price is reasonable ($40-$80), especially compared to hand engraving ($600-$1000). However, I find laser engraving to have a rather flat look. The technology does not yet allow the ability to show curved shapes, muscles, textures such as hair or feathers, etc. It is more of a flat silhouette type look.

For example, look at this beautiful authentic seal of Robert Fitzwalter:

Then compare to this laser engraved seal of Richard III:

The laser engraved Great Seal of Richard III is still impressive and I’m considering purchasing it. But I hope that in the future the software or laser engraving technology can advance to replicate what was done in the 1200’s (ironic when you think about it!). I was actually very surprised to find few places have taken molds to replicate historic wax seals. Even Dexter Seal Engraving does not seem to offer any ready-made or cast seals. They must be custom ordered and hand engraved. But I continue to search and I’m excited to be here and learn more about wax seals!

Cheers,

-Adam
