Writing with my new pen

kazushizuku

Recommended Posts

This is me trying to get over my fear of pens above my regular price ceiling, especially those with flexy nibs.

I had a bit of extra cash last month so I bought some pens from some very nice FPN members. This was The Eversharp Doric, the one I bought last, but it arrived first. I like it, even if I'm deathly afraid of messing it up with my killer deathgrip.

(DISCLAIMER: ALL THE FEATHERING AND SUCH ARE THE FAULT OF THE BAD PAPER AND MY DEATHGRIP, NO FAULT OF THE PEN'S AT ALL. )

Not seeing the picture at this point but looking forward to doing so.

A few minutes later:

Now that I can see the photos/scans, I'm really wishing I could do that. I don't have the fear but I also don't have the skilz! Looking good.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

That's very odd indeed. I could have sworn there was a picture there 15 minutes ago. It looked quite nice too!

Oops, sorry, I was trying to resize cos it was huge, and got distracted into uploading another. :)

(And my scanner scans Florida Blue much darker than real life. It also shows every little nervous twitch in my writing haha)

Nice, confident writing; a bit more space between lines would give the lettering a chance to breathe IMO Thanks for posting!

I like the Doric but, unfortunately, I don't own... maybe in the next future...

Well done, kazushizuku! but please don't scare, enjoy!

Thank you! I'm beginning to get over the fear. My first flex was to have been a less expensive Wahl that I had sent to my sister in the US, but she forgot it when she came home. I tried it again, and I wonder if this is any improvement. :) Nah, but at least my arm isn't cramping from fear, hehehe.

I think that the more generous inter-line spacing is a vast improvement. You have very attractive handwriting and it looks so much better like that - quite a difference!

Thank you! It's funny, I think about leading and spacing a lot when laying out an ad on the computer, but never really thought about it for when I'm writing. Great of you to have brought it up, thanks so much! :)

Well, this doric of mine definitely found a nice new home - or should I say hand!

Lovely, just lovely!

Hehe, thank you, but I must say, the pen was so pretty I almost locked it away and went for the 8B pencils instead. (They break off when you grip them too tightly, which is why I practice with them-- and I was sooooo afraid that that would also happen.)

Thank you again for the great pen! :)

That's a very impressive hand - lovely writing! Much as I like copperplate for calligraphy, this version is much more user-friendly and suitable for a fountain pen, and you are making good use of a flexible nib. I wonder how much you use your handwriting skill, or are you, like so many of us, tied to a computer for most of your correspondence?

I'm terrible at correspondence, (which was why I signed up for the postcard exchange to get into it a bit more), and now, it's mostly email. Most of my handwriting goes to taking notes and initial rough drafts. A long time ago, though, I used to write and submit entirely handwritten radio plays for local dramas (averaging 32 pages legal) on backs of recycled paper when the ancient Smith Corona I generally used broke down, but that's about it. :)

Sweet handwriting, the Florida Blue makes it pop too despite the feathering on bad paper.

Maybe you can try using some dip-pens with extra flexy nibs, to gain control over your self described "death-grip"?

Here's why I say that:

I find that using the flexy carbon steel dip-nibs that I'd bought from forum member jbb, they're meant to be pressed down for line variation.

The dip-nibs lay down so much of an overload of ink, even without pressure, when I switch back to my Pelikan M800 F nib pen I'm far more aware of writing pressure or lack thereof.

With my Pelikan F-nib pen I let the weight of the pen do the work for me, after using the dip-nibs I become far more aware of the fact I don't want to apply the same amount of pressure.

My Pelikan Fine does have some semi-flex to it but since it's an 18C gold nib I don't want to damage it by excessive pressure, thus after writing with flexy dip-nibs I become far more "aware" of pressure once going back to my M800.

“I view my fountain pens & inks as an artist might view their brushes and paints.

They flow across paper as a brush to canvas, transforming my thoughts into words and my words into art.

There is nothing else like it; the art of writing and the painting of words!”

Oooh, thanks for the suggestion! I'd wanted one of jbb's sets since I haven't been able to find dip pen nibs around here, but she doesn't ship outside the US, so I put it on hold. But now that you mention it, I might try to get my US-based sister buy one for me. I'd like to reach the point where being aware of writing pressure doesn't slow me down too much, I wonder how long that would take? Hm. :)
