Losing interest in pens

Here's a clearer picture of the Rotring '28 LE, next to my Old Style Pelikan M800 for size comparison...

Here's a shot of it next to same Pelikan M800, in the wooden box it came in, along with the Sylographic extra nib it also came with...

Once again, it looks kinda "greenish" here as it's under normal house incandescent lighting but under my "natural sunlight" florescent twist bulbs or in direct sunlight it looks more blue.

Simply awesome, not too flashy and yet not too "technical", I can carry it dressing casually or when wearing a 3-piece suit, just a good all-around pen that goes with anything, and does it all too with a simple nib change.

Awesome indeed! That is one exquisite pen.

Love your handwriting, too. Thanks for the samples.

Having a couple of Artpens and once a Freeway, I did not realize that Rotring even made pens like that.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

That's gorgeous! Now you know why some of us like the big pens. They're easy on the hand for all day marathons.

And I note none of us have thanked Rob for the other thing, that's near and dear to ME. We've gone 18 pages to date with civil discourse amongst ourselves. I'd like to thank Rob for setting the tone and everyone else for sticking to it. If all our threads went this way, y'all wouldn't NEED moderators.

Of course now that you've pointed that out there is going to be a flame war :P

.I did not realize that Rotring even made pens like that.

This has been more than the gift of a pen, it's been a major history lesson for me too.

While I'm still researching it, so far I've found indication that Rotring made this pen for Visconti in 1998 [maybe even made BY Visconti, using the Rotring name [?] as it has the exact same filling system as the Visconti Power-Filling as demoed here], before Rotring sold the company to Stanford/Rubbermaid.

There was an auction/sale on the "Bay" that ended @ 8/30/09 for an original Rotring 1928 Limited Edition Pen Launch brochure here I would have loved to had obtained, but unfortunately I didn't even have the GBP 10.00 [@ USD $16.25] plus extra for S&H to pay for it.

FPN member MYU did a review of this and other Rotring pens on FPN, with title & sub-title of "Rotring Tintenkuli Stylographs, (a historical and pictoral exposé)" back @ Apr 29 2007, seen here, along with another review he'd posted that takes you to the review called "Rotring Tintenkuli: The quintessential technical pen (or stylograph)" and the final page called "Conclusion" here.

I'd written MYU a PM, asking for more information, but as yet have not received a reply, don't know if he's still around or maybe just too busy for the answers to be sent me,

It's a rather anomalous item with very little information available as to it's true origins, so the Search goes on for the answers, making it that much more enjoyable to me to be able to do the research or find some answers.

Thank you, my thoughts and findings exactly.

All that Rob had asked of me in return for this pen was that I "promise" not to treat this as "a museum piece", adding that "pens are meant to be used, not just displayed.", something along those lines.

So I did promise Rob, that I would most definitely "use" this pen, adding that as I do so it will still be well taken care of, cleaned and polished often, so basically I gave no guarantees it won't still look like a museum piece many years from now!

Fascinating, Captain. What a history! And a unique pen. Thanks for the link! As I said - I knew Rotring as only the producer of ArtPens and a couple of other models.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I've been there through the accumulation mode....maybe not to the extent you have, but I was once up over 500 and it was too many. I had a whole collection of Duofolds, Conklin Enduras, Vacumatics, Waterman 7's, and others in most typical colors. But I wasn't using them, they just sat in their cases......

So I sold most of the vintage pens and kept probably 50 or so, most of which get used. I once had a bunch of Parker 45's, but never liked to use them....so most are now gone.

I kept a whole set of Esterbrook Pastel Purse pens, mainly because I love the colors and my two girls love them too.

I kept my pretty-much-complete collection of Lamy Safari's as they are pretty, come in lots of colors, were cheap, and they all still get used.

I sold about 1/2 of my modern pens.

I'll probably start through another purge, but it will be less extreme this time.

So now I have a couple of collections mentioned above. And I have a bunch of users, which I like. If a pen doesn't excite me, or I feel It's too expensive to keep, it goes out, almost nothing is sacred, except for about 6-10 gift pens.

If you like a pen and you use it, then that's good. If you like having collections, then that's good too.

They're JUST pens...

...I feel paranoid by saying, "I haven't received my pens yet!" D: I keep rechecking the addresses I gave, and they're both correct and the same.

Then again I remind myself that I am in the Philippines, and shipping takes time, and keep praying that the pens aren't "lost in the mail."

Other than that, I feel happy about this whole giveaway and how long it has gotten. Strayed off topic for a little, and then went right back on track.

Oh, and interesting read for the Rotrings. I also thought they were just Artpens and the Core FPs...and other models I know nothing about.

Cheers,

Lachesis

All I can say, is that this gives me hope.

Lately, I have been going through personal struggles, and this level of openess is surprising and it helps to reenforce that there are good people in the world.

Bless you..

Not sure exactly what to pray for, but that's ok with me. He'll know. :) You'll be in our family prayers, Doug.

One of the coolest things that I've taken away from this thread, as well as Brian's Cherished Creation auctions, is the level of generosity and compassion that so many FPN'rs have shown. To see so many people stepping up with real, honest-to-God compassion and care for the human spirit...that's inspiring. To see it happen here, where very few of us actually know one another on a face-to-face, "let's get together at my house for dinner" kind of way...that's incredible.

Friends,

I have failed to keep up on sending out pens. I've been a busy with work and other projects, leaving little time for other pursuits. The pens are still here. I will make every effort to get back on track, but please be patient with me. Weekends tend to be grueling in my line of work, and the weekdays have not been any better as of late. I will be sending pens as I have promised. Feel free to send me a message if you have any concerns.

I think you could probably be forgiven, under the circumstances. ;) Hope your work stuff settles down (for your sake, that is, not ours).

I think you've given us better things than pens. [Yes, you newbies, they DO exist.]

It's still spreading. Some little while ago, I had offered to pay the overseas shipping for one of the pens. Rotomobees declined the offer and requested that I instead donate the funds to a charity of my choice, so our local food bank got an extra little bump above our usual monthly donation. The way I figure it, in addition to the pens, he has now provided a few meals for some folks in Alamance County, North Carolina as well.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

No problem. You've already done far more then most people, how can we expect you to do more then you can?
