And I have to wait another month for mine.....................At least I got to live vicariously through these photos.

Is the purple urushi not showing up in everyone pictures, or is the pen just almost black?

Hi Doug,

The color is definitely not black, but more like dark chocolate. The purple will not show unless under brighter light, so we manly man should have no problem using it. :roflmho:

I got an email saying a tracking number had been generated for my pen.

Is it a sign of impatience that I've got a tracking window open on my second monitor, and it's set to refresh every 5 minutes? :hmm1:

Absolutely!

I brought it to work today and was using it most of the day. I would periodically look at the Maki-e and examine the details especially the characters that make up the haiku. The EEF nib is perfect for me since I usually need a very fine nib at work. I like this new pen body for it's simple form. It fits the theme of the pen very much. It handles like a mini-Genkai but much more travel friendly than the gigantic Genkai.

It's chocolate plum...it's the color of chocolate licorice if you look quickly and are hungry!!!!!

Now, now Playpen! Go eat something else!!!

Mine has a long trip before I can test the chocolate licorice theory.........does it smell like it too?

Patience is a virtue I hope to find soon!!! :notworthy1:

My Fellowship pen arrived today (I'm in Tennessee) and it's even more than I had ever hoped for--in color, design, size and looks. I'm eager to ink it and take a test journey--but not till tomorrow when I look through all my inks to find just the right one for it. As good as all the photos have been of the pen, the true color doesn't reveal itself in the photos. The description of the color as plum chocolate is accurate and I'll fully agree with that.

Bravo to Kevin for all his work on this amazing project. Now I can't wait to get to DC on Thursday to show this pen around. Anyone with a love for Maki-e work is going to fall for this pen every time.

AltecGreen, Ethernautrix,

Ya know... my expectations for the pen were steeped more in the community nature of it. I knew it would be a special pen, regardless. Even so, when I saw it, I was delighted, but there was a part of me that held back, assessing.

Ever see the movie Tampopo, the scene where the old man instructs the young man on the proper ramen-eating protocol? Tap the pork, tap the kamaboko, let them know you appreciate their contribution to the gestalt of ramen. There is a similar regard I feel for the new fountain pen. Look at the whole pen, then look closely at its components: the outside, the top, the bottom, the cap, take off the cap, notice the threads, look at the nib. Then look at the whole again (tap, tap, tap).

I had a question about the cap. Did the facets align with the barrel? "Ricky, let me see yours."

"What?"

"Does this look right to you?"

Looks at it. "Yeah. Yeah, that's right!"

Kevin scutinizes it. "Yes, that's right. See?"

Okay. Just checking.

Uncap. Look at the nib. Re-cap. Look at the whole pen. Notice all the details. No scratches on the finish. Nothing marring its artistry, the craftsmanship. Okay.

Okay.

It's beautiful.

Ink. Ink is next.

I had only Noodler's Black with me, cos I thought that that was the ink I would want to use. If the pen had told me otherwise, I would have waited to decide on the ink it wanted. But the pen had no objection to Noodler's Black.

Of course I had to ink it right away.

My Fellowship pen has a regular (stiff) fine. I chose wisely. The regular fine is toothy and perfect. I LOVE this nib! (I am beginning to understand that my conception of "smooth" is not the same as others' conception of smooth. I do not want my nib to glide across the page like a hovercraft from London to Calais. I want some slight friction, texture.)

I was aware that my infatuation might hide dissatisfaction or reservations, so I was alert to that, the cognitive dissonance.

I wrote with the pen that night, without any lessening of delight. I wrote with the pen the next day. Same reaction. I kept looking at it, looking for any reason to be dissatisfied.

I started to feel sorry for all my other pens, very fine, gorgeous, wonderful writers, that were not going to get any more paper time.

To answer your question, Doug, the Fellowship has joined my permanent Daily Rotation.

Hi Alfio,

I'll see if I can track down a copy for you this weekend.

Best,

Kevin

Kevin, just tell me where they sell it. I have tried every Borders and Barnes and Noble in town, and they all said they have stopped selling it.

Ethernautrix,

Great, subtle observations. I really do think I know what you mean about people's definitions of 'smoothness'.

I have pens that have a little bit of tooth, but they have the same amount of resistence writing up, down, left, right or diagonally.

You made me realize that this is one of the main issues I have with my Nakayas. They tend to require a different amount of movement going from side to side than they do back and forth. As a result, it tends to change my style of writing.

Wow, a epiphany???
