Ink Review: Mont Blanc Racing Green

JHeels

Recommended Posts

Although there are several reviews of Mont Blanc Racing Green already on FPN, I thought I'd do a review on bagasse paper, as it is my everyday paper. I also separated the dyes in the ink using chromotography, to help individuals identify the hues they see. Also, the dye data might help those Racing Green diehards come up with their own mixes, in the event that the discontinuation rumor is really true.

Unfortunately, FPN keeps informing me that the image extensions I'm using are invalid, so if you would like to check out my review, it may be found on my website.

Peace,

James

Nice review James! RG is my personal favorite as well.

Save that bottle though, because rumor has it that MB is going to discontinue this color!

Boutiques are running out of it already!

Nice review. MB Racing Green really is a wonderful colour. I wouldn't worry too much if MB stops making it: I find it almost indistinguishable from Noodler's Sequoia.

The manager of the Charlotte NC boutique says no to discontinuing Racing Green. Ulricke called the Montblanc Headquarters and confirmed no plans to discontinue Racing Green. So I wouldn't worry too much right now over this.

Thanks for the review. IT remains one of my faves too!

Excellent review; thanks. If you have J. Herbin's Vert Empire, it might be interesting to see a chromatograph of that, too, to compare them. They go down looking quite different, but after several days they seem much closer in color to each other.

Now I get what all the hoopla is about with this color. Thanks for the review and for the news that it is not going to be discontinued.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

I tried MB Racing Green with my Pelikan 400 M nib and found the color to be "muddy" green in my eyes. This pen is a wet writer; so, maybe that is why ink looks muddy dark greenish color. It is better with with a F pen?

First, I would like to say that I heard so many wonderful things about this ink that I expected to be disappointed...I tried it in a Reform 1745 to test it (as I do with most inks in case they are inimical to my other piston fillers) and was disappointed because the ink seemed like a dull, flat, boring green. I inked a Pelikan M 400 with it and was astonished at how much line variation and subtle shading I got. In most of my pens I get a shade that ranges from a greenish to black within the same letter. It has been well-behaved both in pen and on paper and I have nothing but good things to say about this ink now. With regard to your experience, I would ask that you try it in other pens and on other kinds of paper (one of my composition notebooks produced a truly unattractive gangrenous shade with this ink, as well as bleedthrough usually found only in hospital bandages). If you still dislike this ink, I am SURE that someone on the boards will be happy to buy it from you.

Yours,

Blueblazes

Thanks for the reminder. I really like the sample a friend sent and ought to add a bottle to my collection.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but is this still the case?

I just picked up the last bottle from my local stockist, and he said he'd had it on back-order for ages but he hadn't been told it was being phased out so he didn't know what what going on. Has it now been axed or is it just in limited production or something?

Also, the ink has "use by Jun 2013" stamped on the box... I wasn't aware inks had use-by dates; is this just MB trying to get extra cash or do they genuinely put something with a limited shelf-life in the ink?

Yep, was in my boutique store a few days ago. Montblanc is discontinuing Racing Green -- only some 50 boxes of cartridges left here in Charlotte. All of the cartridge boxes have use by dates that have expired or are close to expiration. Doesn't affect the performance of the ink, though. Think I will have to play with Zhivago or Squeteegue or ... and find a replacement green. Fortunately, Pear Tree Pens still does its ink sampler program. I will post a few pictures of inks and mixes if I get anything even close to the MB Racing Green colors put up.

Enjoy,

Thanks; I guess I was lucky to get the last bottle then :)

I just received an order of 4 bottles. I ordered a bottle from MB's refill shop and they are unable to send me any!

Our document racing green ink bottle is currently on backorder. We are expecting another product shipment in approximately 3-4 weeks.

I have two coming from a Boutique and one more that may be on the way from an AD. This is my favourite green and I'm not going to go looking for another!
