Yeah, the selection of ink brands that Vanness carries is astounding (they were the first place outside of the Akkerman store in the Hague to carry Akkerman inks, for instance).

Absolutely yes! I buy all of my inks from Vanness if I'm not in a rush and decide to drive up to Columbia, md to PenBoutique and buy it in person.

Yup! Galen is one of my fave sellers - their cust.svc knocks it outta the park!  And that's the key (you found); build up your order 'til the freight's worth it. Last order, from Turkey, was delivered here in NC, with the nice 'bonus' goodies (coffee AND tea, +) just 4 days after I ordered. You can't beat that with a stick!

BTW, if you'll look around that link, you should see a nice sample  set (5ml) of Troublemakers. I'm trying hard to talk myself out of one. [But think I'm not gonna listen.]

Oooh...let me go re-check that link out. The pricing on the inks is right as well!!

I think the first time I ordered from Vanness was because I wanted a certain Akkerman ink- a reddish brown or brownish red, if I recall correctly... ;)

Yama-guri is probably my favorite ink. Markedly darker than Tsukushi, and equally well-behaved. A lovely rich dark brown, almost black if you put it on heavily.

Note also that Tsukushi has already been discontinued, and when I talked to someone from Pilot, they told me both Tsukushi and Ina-ho (also discontinued) are already sold out. So if you really like Tsukushi, and you see a bottle available, I would buy it.

Oh wow...did not know this. I guess my half-full bottle of Tsukushi will retain value.

I have an order with Vanness for samples of "Iroshizuku - Yama Guri" and "Faber-Castell - Moss Green" along with the "Opus-88 EF Flex" nib unit.
However...that order was placed last week.
The order I placed after it has arrived and nothing shows in tracking for the ink/nib order. I emailed Mike at the store and he says it's not been scanned in since it got into the Little Rock, AK distribution site. Says it should show up soon enough once it arrives in my local AO and gets scanned in for final delivery. 🙄
My guess is that this is going to be another lost order that shows up a month late...if at all.

I'm glad that I'm not too pressed about the order contents as I've walked away from the world of Flex and both ink samples mimic inks I already have.
I'll just file for a refund with Paypal in a week.

Very disappointing...This is strike 2 with the mail failing to transport in Little Rock, AK.

I'll admit that Tsukushi didn't wow me.  But I LOVE Yama-guri (I tend to prefer browns that are either middle of the spectrum, sepia-toned, or slightly yellow leaning better than the red-leaning ones).

Would have been really cranky if they had discontinued Yama-Guri (even more than I was over them discontinuing Tsuyu-kusa, which never seemed to get the love that some of the other Iroshizuku blue inks got, but I thought was lovely and restful, and better behaved than Asa-Gao (which I found to be pretty but drippy).

Wow -- what a bummer. :(  I've never had any problems with ordering from Vanness, and in fact just got some stuff from them about a month and a half ago -- actually added some inks to the order so I could be eligible for free shipping (yeah, like I really needed more ink when i haven't tried some I already HAVE yet :headsmack:).

Welp...I may still order a bottle of "Yama Guri" but from "Goulet Pens". They're closer and I've never lost a package with them.
I'm disappointed to hear that "Asa Gao" doesn't perform well...I had my eye on a bottle of that one. Maybe I'll get a sample of it first. I need a darker blue than "Kon Peki" provides...but with the lubrication and smooth use of an Iroshizuku ink. Maybe Monteverde has something like "Asa Gao"...

Yeah, I'm bummed too. I love Vanness but I can't accept orders going missing every other time I order from them.
I'll try them again in 6 months, but until the mail gets it's head out of it's posterior out there...I'm doing business locally.

When I started out here, a lot of people said that Asa-Gao was their go-blue.  But for me, it didn't behave well in the pen I had it in.  Wrote a page and then watched a big blob of ink roll down the nib and go splat.  After this happened 3 pages in a row?  I was underwhelmed.  OTOH, I LOVE Kon-peki as well as Tsuyu-kusa, and would never want to be without Yama-budo, Yama-guri, or Murasaki-Shikibu either.  I blow hot and cold on Take-sumi (it's an interesting ink but I'm not big on black.)

Some of the other ones in the line, though, run the gamut of "Meh" to "How does ANYONE like this ink?"  Kosumosu was a great disappointment -- and under incandescent light it just looked like overripe watermelon....  Fuyu-gaki behaved okay, but well, was orange.  Shin-kai didn't wow me (OTOH, I really like Edelstein Tanzanite, which had some sort of jeune se quois quality about it that Shin-kai just didn't have...).

But of course I could say the same about pretty much every brand of ink I've ever tried: some I LOVE; but other inks from the same company/line?  I either hated some color(s) or they didn't behave well for me, or both....

ETA:  And some work well in some pens but not others, and vice versa.  Yama-guri was too wet for my Pelikan M400 Brown Tortoise, but Edelstein Smoky Quartz does well in the same pen (and so does Noodler's Walnut, which was way too dry for the first pen I put it in, but tames the wet nib on the M400 while the nib coaxes a better flow out of the ink.  Go figure....

Wow...so "Asa Gao" is THAT wet!? Yikes!

Awesome! So "Yama Guri" is indeed a wet ink!
I'm going to hope that the samples I ordered from Vanness do arrive sometime.
I've ordered 9 samples of blue inks (Asa Gao included) from Goulet tonight, they should arrive next week. :)

I can finally find another blue besides "Kon Peki".

Was able to find a bottle of Sailor Jentle Chu-shu on Amazon for $25. The 50mL size.

I got a bit lucky finding a bottle of Sailor Sky High for the same price a few months back.

Asa-gao is pretty wet but the color is perfection. If it’s too wet for your pen then try a different pen😉

But I guess any FP ink can be made to work well if you’re willing to experiment with pen & paper.

I haven’t had much trouble with the ink, but I pretty much only (and always) use it in one pen, so I haven’t given it a lot of opportunity to not work well in others. Pilot #30 FM nib, which doesn’t seem particularly wet nor dry. I would not bother to put it into a wet pen, though.

My Yamabudo cruds a bit, although mainly specs, when used in my Pilot Justus 95. It is the only ink to do so in that pen.

I use Yama-budo in a Pilot Metro F all the time without issue.  It's a really nice pairing.

Great info, thank you! I will have to purchase a bottle if the sample proves well in my pen.
The sample order from Goulet should get here mid-next-week.
Can't wait! 😁

I guess the easiest way to give into the ink bug is to buy a pen that needs a proprietary cartridge. It twists your arm! I have a 7 color set of Platinum cartridges with a little Stationery jp compact 5 color notebook coming. Funny enough, I didn’t order them, I was browsing before I go to Uwajimaya/Kinokuniya next week. My husband probably saved us a ton by impulse gifting.

I find the Iroshizuku line in general to be wet. I keep it far away from my wet writers, but it does well in EF and most Asian pens of mine. My  hoses get Pelikan and Sheaffer.

Top 5 of 20 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Sailor x Daimaru Central Rockhopper Penguin PGS mini, Sailor Wonder Blue

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Salz Peter Pan 18k gold filled filligree fine flex, Waterman Serenity Blue

Yiren Giraffe IEF, Pilot Yama-Guri/sky blue holographic mica

With much thanks to one of our very kind and generous British FPN members, who made a Papier & Stift order and is collecting some other things I ordered:

  • The Papier & Stift/Diamine exclusive shading blues, "Hey Ho let's write", "Should I type or should I write" and "Lust for write"
  • Pure Pens Cotswolds
  • Troublemaker Tuslob Buwa, a new product
  • Diamine 150th Anniversary Silver Fox
  • Diamine Sienna & Burnt Umber

She is also sending some samples, including some surprise ones, and a few other things I ordered.

To say I am looking forward to this would be an understatement!
