This illustrates a point I've wondered about. I used to work in textiles, and we did a lot of fabric dyeing. In both our labs, we had a machine resembling a walk-up booth, where you could lay out samples and go thru a test spectrum of lighting, bright to dim, fluorescent, simulated time of day color of sunlight, night lighting, inside and out, yada yada....All to see how the material looked under the different conditions. And the color shifts could sometimes be pretty amazing.

This is such an interesting and useful topic, I wish it was more widely known. My hypothesis, drawing from experience, is that these shifts can be most dramatic in the color ranges we file under the headings Green and Purple, as these are the transition zones between "warm colors", those that neutralize through Brown, and "cool colors" those that neutralize through grey.

Diamine's Salamander and, more extreme, Oster's Khakhi first drew my attention to these, but my two new Taccia Purples are just as dramatic in their shifting from brown-pink-fuschia (umemurasaki) and blue-black through deep violet (aomurasaki).

I wonder if there's a connection to inks that seem impossible to photograph or scan "as the eye sees them"?

... and, I want one of those booths!

I have an update. My 5/30 package from Vanness via usps to Oregon by way of Puerto Rico arrived yesterday safe and sound after 10 days of transit.

My Birmingham order from the 23rd shipped today. Ups thinks it will take 6 days to get here... I hope they are not also planning an island detour.

If I said I'll fix it, I will. There's no need to remind me every 6 months.

Hopefully it enjoyed its vacation - maybe some time on the beach and some pina coladas - and is relaxed and ready for work.

Was just about to say the same as Pithy here above. I hope it enjoyed its vacation to Puerto Rico. It’s lovely down there! 😄

My 'THE INK' for my new, I'm thinking of naming her "Baby Love Supremes", has, despite innumerous glitchlets that have been and are still going on - arrived. Blue 72, x Franklin-Christoph. , the '72' is its Pantone number, the legend goes. ~8》

Very possibly my lifetime favorite - could see myself being quite happy with it as not only my 1-&-only blue, but my only ink!   A stunning Blue - darkens towards center as It dries.  And smo-o-o-oth!  I don't know if it was that pen or that ink that made the first-contact experience so, just....magical. And I couldn't run the risk of them being apart ever again, could I? Brought 'em both home with me!  AND ordered the paper [couldn't break the spell, could I?] & a big bottle! Gotta keep her fed.

[Did I tell ya she's a looker?]

🤣😍😂

I've wondered if we for the most part, have developed our sundry 'favorites' based on what we see in our various 'writing nooks',  where the lighting rarely if ever changes. I'd venture, take some out into the sunlight (or the shady corner of your garden) -- you might be in for a surprise!

Years ago I worked for a while at a local Jo-Ann Fabrics.  I once had a customer who had pretty much EVERY bolt of "navy blue" fabric on the cutting table, complaining that they weren't all the same color....  And wouldn't listen when I tried to explain that they were different types of fabrics (so reflected the light differently) or different dye lots.....

And I've noticed that when I'm testing inks I have to do it under natural light because incandescent bulbs are more yellow than LED ones (even the 3-way LEDs are different from natural light).  Plus, I'm using really crummy absorbent paper (the 5"x8" cheap Piccadilly sketch books that are sold in the "bargain books" section at area Barnes & Nobles stores -- and they *definitely* change the way some inks look, as compared to better paper like Rhodia).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thank you for that. And again I'll add that, bottom line, on top of it all, the details of what, when & chemistry -- what one adores, another abhors. Kinda like, beauty's in the eyes of the beerholder?

*oops....ahem* ...I meant beholder! *sotto voce* [Tho both may apply!]

I dunno..  Me? I sort've follow a philosophy which happenstance, I've not seen discussed here - not that I've gone looking for it. But simply, I try to use inks based on where, & in some circumstances, why, it's intended or most likely to be read.

I have some other views about inks that seem to run contrary to the mainstream....but that's fodder for another yada-yada,

G'nite, Gracie!

I really like the Dark Forest family, but can never keep straight which company's I prefer.  The name seems to be widely used.

Depicting one of my lifelong heroes. At least, on my bottle. I've heard that's one of the new 'sensitivity' label changes Nathan is making or being pushed to make. Mine was bought more for that commemoration than any amount of red ink I'll use in my remaining years. If he (Nathan) caves, I won't buy a drop of anything from him ever again.

Same, my thoughts align with yours. Nathan Tardiff has discontinued the ink and that's why I am in such a hurry to  buy the ink, the ink is discontinued due to backlash from what I call "Bernanke Red Incident". There are more in-depth things about the incident, we could discuss this further if that is what you want.

Cheers,

Ian
