249 looks intriguing - I wonder if it is more of a taupe or straight grey

I might be able to tell you later today, if my small ship comes in....

I am not even a beginner at Japanese, but I have been learning the Kanji for lots of traditional Japanese Colors - it's really fun and worthwhile!

That is very cool to hear about. I would have been overwhelmed at the thought of learning to read kanji, but if I put it to myself in those terms, maybe I could make a start.

Hello BikerChick!
Having read your message I was inspired to try each of my blue violets on the same page with a big broad dip-nib . . but then I discovered, to my disappointment, that I already did that on the day they arrived! I would probably swap in Herbin Bleu Myosotis (left to dry for at least two days!) for the 223 at this point, but hopefully this is of some interest. The 223 is quite "petrol"!
Oh, and one I did even earlier with Myosotis, China Blue, Kakitsubata and (an old favorite) Oster's Summer Storm.

I was curious about Pencil as well but I've read somewhere that the current version is much more a neutral grey. (?)

I'm glad you mentioned this, as I hadn't heard that. Useful to know, as I was interested based on an older review.

From what I can gather (by web search only), the names of the twelve colours in PenBBS Season 16 inks are one particular series of poetic synonyms for the twelve months in the lunar calendar, with #249 子春 (Zichūn) being the name of tenth month.

Thanks for the tip, @A Smug Dill. You prompted me to ask my friend Wenyang, and she gave me this perfectly beautiful description:

"The ink’s name is 子春。There is no specific meaning with the combination of the two words (which is common; it is just a beautiful name). has multiple meanings, usually mean offspring or seed. In Chinese astrology,  means earth/soil () and is related to the year of the mouse (the most recent year of the mouse is 2020). means spring.

The two lines are from a poem written by Bai Juyi 白居易(772–846 AD), a famous poet in Tang Dynasty.

十月江南天气好,可怜冬景似春华。The weather in Jiangnan in October is so good; the winter scenery still has the appearance of spring. (Jiangnan: South of the Yangtze River, a beautiful and affluent area in the mid-south part of eastern China, including cities such as Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Shanghai)."

By chance, I found a single bottle remaining of the lovely Kyo no oto Ginkatsuyoku

Kyo no oto - Ginkatsuyoku

so that's on its way. Along with another super pale ink, the beautiful Kobe 72, which I've been meaning to get ever since seeing it reviewed here last year.

I've managed to get them delivered to a family member in Europe, who's due to visit next month, so avoided the horrific shipping fees and import costs. Though I'm dreadful at waiting, so I must now forget about them until they arrive!

A very nice spring, summer and autumn there, but a bloody miserable winter! Haha. (I lived there until recently.)

I can't find a definitive source for the origin of the use of that series of twelve poetic names to represent the months, but maybe your friend can help:

https://www.google.com/search?q=首陽+紺香+鶯時+槐序+鳴蜩+季夏+蘭秋+南宮+菊月+子春+葭月+冰月

Most of the returned matches are to articles written in simplified Chinese, which is a bit difficult for me to read and understand past a few lines. They are seem to agree that it is a well-known series of names in antiquity.

There is a bunch here that is written in traditional Chinese:

https://kknews.cc/culture/y8b456a.html

but I still can't work out from them who decided on or popularised the series.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Diamine Safari and KWZ Honey from Dromgoole's.

In a deepest winter spirit of nothing much going on, I have pulled almost all of my ink samples out of the ink cabinet and am committed to using one fill from each before either discarding it or buying a bottle. This has left a lot of shelf space begging to be filled, so that's what I'm doing. Last week: Taccia Ao Blue and R & K Alt-gold Grun.

What is this curious term? I can read the definition but I've never yet grasped it's meaning!

It's an archaic term meaning to sacrifice one's beloved children. It is now considered barbaric.

@AmandaW It’s all about the greys!

Well they arrived last week, with an “empty” Diamine Poppy Red bottle with about 1,5ml of ink.

That’s in my eye dropper now, and I haven’t got to the greys yet. 🤣26C4E29C-4857-4C73-B07A-FEE843D32AD9.thumb.jpeg.f199765316a91098d4c2f08ded7a0a37.jpeg

I needed to replace a bottle of burgundy red ink that I spilt 😬 but I was wanting something more red than burgundy this time. So, after searching several sites over several days to find something I thought I might like (boy, reds are difficult), I am now waiting for TWO bottles of (two different) red inks and an entire sample set of an ink series comprised of 8 different colors that should be arriving today. Given that I have a 20-bottle ink limit in place and I only needed to replace ONE bottle of ink, I'm still doing ok, right?
