What ink(s) are you waiting for in the mail?

My Edelstein Golden Beryl finally arrived and I immediately put in in my M200 Marbled Brown thinking it would be perfect - alas, the Golden Beryl is too orange for the M200.

I (somewhat) recently bought a second Pelikan M200 Gold-Marbled thinking it'd be a perfect match for Edelstein Golden Beryl; my first one is ‘permanently’ married to Platinum Classic Ink Citrus Black. Still waiting for that pen to be dispatched, though.

Now that I've given Montblanc Lucky Orange a quite writing test loading it into a PenBBS 494 piston-filler fitted with a steel F nib donated by a Pilot MR Metropolitan,

if this ink has any redeeming feature, other than the fact that I got all four bottles free, I'm not seeing it. OK, it's not a Noodler's Ink; that has to count for something. It also genuinely looks better than Noodler's Ink Operation Overlord Orange, which just about tops the list of inks I dislike, in spite of having high hopes for the latter when I ordered it. It feels watery, and has zero water resistance on paper; yet it managed to get all over the hand towel near the bathroom basin where I do most of the ink filling and cleaning. Even if it's the same colour as Sailor Shikiori Kinmokusei — yet to be confirmed — Montblanc's brand name and the ink's retail price per millilitre would put it at a disadvantage. I don't even know whether I could use it as a highlighter ink over writing done with other fountain pen inks; I suspect it would make even Platinum Carbon Black weep and run in terror.

I was telling my wife just a few hours ago how there are now another two bottles of ink to give away to friends (who aren't really fountain pen hobbyists) who said they're interested in trying a range of different ink colours. Scratch that. I think I'll find some fun Diamine inks for them instead, even if Montblanc's 30ml bottle of course looks a lot classier than Diamine's.

And to think I spent so much time and energy chasing my ‘entitlement’ to two free bottles of this due having made eligible orders during a promotion! The joke's on me.

I'll just leave this here... 🤐

Highly addictive ink. I love the shading, and I don't even like orange.  I'm buying things I don't like, Dill. Could it be that you're rubbing off on me? :D

(But as I stated in another post, if I don't use at all, I'm leaving this to @mizgeorge in my will. I may leave you a bottle too)

That's what I spontaneously think every time I receive an email from them that my order has been shipped. :)

Thanks for the kind thought all the same!

Alas, I'm now no longer in a position to buy any ink, should the lockdown here be lifted and Dymocks again starts offering some apparently ‘unpopular’ inks at half-price to clear its stock. For a while, it was trying to sell off a number of orange and pink inks like that (but maybe two different colours each week or fortnight, and not offering them all at once). I wish I'd been keeping an eye out on such at the time for Robert Oster Orange Rumble and Burnt Orange inks!

So far, the closest-to-perfect orange I've tried is Pelikan Edelstein IOTY 2013 Amber, of which I only had a sample I picked up when the Aussie FPN pass-around box was doing the rounds (and came full circle back to me for a pit stop). Alas, I just used up the very last of it mid-sentence while writing in my journal last night. 😢

It just occurred to me (because I walked past where the item was hanging) that the colour of this ink looks very much like the Salomon running jacket I was wearing earlier today.

I love orange as a colour, but this shade of orange is the sort I want to be wearing so that passers-by will have to look at it while I largely don't. 😈  Not exactly what I want to be putting my writing in on the page for my own subsequent review…

You guys are so funny. I love Lucky Orange :) I use it in moderation, and it's fabulous for drawing with. Now I just have to outlive you...

Van Dieman's makes a "Golden Nugget Pumpkin" - I have an unopened bottle that I won.  Looks orange ;)

Scratch my order, too.  I am waiting for nothing in the mail.  Was having tech problems with Vanness's website yesterday and now that I seem to be able to check out there is no SBRE Brown left in stock!

So I was waiting for three, but now I am awaiting none.

I went on a bit of a Chinese ink discovery tour last night and ordered:

PenBBS #408, which I've seen several people mention before. @mizgeorge, have you received yours yet?

PenBBS #181

PenBBS #182

Fanyantan Studio Wushan ink:

01aQBm7.png

I went out on a bit of a limb on this last one, after I saw this brand being mentioned by a Chinese Instagram user I follow.  I couldn't find any other info on it. I may make my very first ink review after this ink arrives, although I'm not sure I can do as fine a job as some of the regular ink review contributors here on FPN.

No, I'm still waiting. Shipping from China is very, very slow at the moment. I looked at the Fanyantan lines - there's a colour in this summer's releases (green plum?) that really appealed, but they're 20ml bottles and cost more than I pay for Sailor Studios, which is already too much!

I think you'll like 181 (and 182) very much :)

Please do! Every perspective and review helps everyone get a better understanding of just how these inks work and look :)
That ink is beauuuuuutiful!!
I may add that to my list of inks to acquire, thank you for sharing!! :D

EDIT: Whooooweee! Looks like Vanness got a whole slew of new Penbbs inks in!
I know where my fun money is going next month! :D :D :D 😍

[snip]

I received Penbbs 408, along with 5 other Penbbs inks, a few days ago and I just tried it out for the first time today - dip pens and cotton swabs only, so far. Here's some quick n' dirty pics - late afternoon, indirect sun - no color correction or any other processing - Hobonichi Techo notebook, so Tomoe River 52gms. (I'm sure I butchered the Chinese characters - sorry!)

This is my first multi-chroma ink (is that what they are called? I forget ...) and I got it out of curiosity and because the price was right. It goes down pretty much blue, then the blue mostly spreads towards the edges, revealing the lilac-y color. I really piled up the ink heavily in the middle of swatch on the top left and it started out very blue and, after a few minutes of drying, turned to what you see in the picture. I suspect it will require a really wet fountain pen or it will be overly faint. Quite pretty ink, I think.

408 looks gorgeous - and yes, I think it looks very like Barafundle. I'm hoping mine will be here in the next few days to be able to make a direct comparison, but it's certainly in the same territory.

346 is a lovely ink too - one I use quite a lot - it's very well behaved and has just enough depth of colour to be very legible for a lighter grey.

So far, I have only tried it with a dip pen and one fountain pen, a frankenpen with a Pilot Plumix F nib. It looked fantastic to me with both - kind of what I expected Purple Rock to look like - but now that I go back to look at what I wrote with the Plumix this evening it looks more dark and less purple - I suspect it may not play well with warm lighting - I will know better tomorrow when I can look at it again under natural light.

So far I am really happy with 346 too. At first I was a bit disappointed because it seemed much more a neutral grey but, like many inks, it seems to need the right pen to shine. 3rd pen tried was the charm. It is much more legible than my picture makes it out to be.

278 is a wonderful dusty and laid-back saffron color. Wasn't too sure about the color when I ordered it because I am generally not much of a fan of orange inks and there's next to nothing about it online. But as soon as I started writing with it it totally won me over. This and Moonlight of Hagashiyama have opened my orange horizons a bit.

Still haven't tried 344 Mulberry or 397 Breakfast Time, both also from my recent haul of Penbbs ink, in fountain pens. (A 15ml bottle of 397 was an unexpected free gift from the seller because I was his first customer - pretty nice!) So far I am generally really happy with Penbbs inks. And only around $6 per 60ml bottle with free shipping with this order!

Oh wooooow,....that is beautiful like "Sailor Manyo Haha"!
I will have to pick up a bottle soon. Especially since it's cheaper than Haha and i'm sure performs more consistently.

Pretty color.  And the ink appears to have one of my favorite characteristics in ink -- the darker edge lines on pen strokes (what other people refer to as "haloing").  But beyond that, the ink looks way too light to be legible over the long haul.

But thanks for posting the pix.  You've saved me from buying an ink that would make me crazy with trying to read it (I can get a similar result from just diluting something beyond all recognition with water, except maybe for the haloing effect).

It's too bad, though, because I'm a complete sucker for the edge crispness that haloing gives.

Arriving today from Van Ness:

Pennonia kefkeny (blue light), 50ml. Thanks to Loke for bringing this to my attention; I'm a sucker for blue.

PenBBS #135 Beijing, sample.

PenBBS #179 Serenity, sample; thanks to crahptacular's review.

There are some other penbbs inks I'd like to try, but no one seems to sell them anymore, e.g. Penbbs #217 Iris Tectorum inspired by crahptacular's beautiful drawing

Hope you like it. I have been using it since the moment I inked my medium stub. Perfect balance of intensity and sheen for me!

Should order a few more bottles to be sure... 🙂
