How to Make an Eye Dropper Pen

JetPens

I tried converting my Namiki Falcon and it worked :) but when I put the cap on and pull it off again, ink comes out the nib and makes a mess. :crybaby: I ended up going back to the converter. Has anybody else had this problem?

I tried again but didn't fill it quite so full with good results. No more mess. Now I have a high ink capacity Namiki Falcon. Thanks jet pens for the tutorial!

How did they stack up against the JetPens size and specs. I understand that they're plumbing type o-rings and perhaps we can stretch that to pens as we're plumbing the ink to function in the pen and not leak!

The hardware mega store near me only went down to 10mm O-rings, where as the ones needed are more around 6-6.5mm O rings. I actually found the ones I needed at a car accessory shop

The pen has been made now. The 10mm (internal diameter) o-rings were the same size as the pen, so they may have been a but loose and I didn't feel secure using them. So I put the 6.5mm ones on (1/4 of an inch, as recommended by jetpens). It was a bit of a stretch getting it on, but it seems to seal very tightly, and so far no ink has gotten out. I also put some silicone spray on the threads.

First, kudos to JetPens for providing informational articles on their website!

Second, I can report on a (thus far) successful conversion of a Rotring Surf pen

without using O-rings. Like the Preppy, the Surf has a one-piece barrel and a

reasonably long set of threads, which makes it a good candidate. Using only a

dab of silicone grease (in this case, plumber's grease, available at any hardware

store -- a lifetime supply will cost you about $3) on the threads, the pen has

functioned flawlessly for weeks now. No drips, leaks, etc. I haven't tried taking

it on an airplane, so I can't claim that it's an ideal solution, but it certainly was

easy. The pen has been sitting (horizontally) on my kitchen table for close to

a month without incident. It's my default note-taking, list-making pen.

Thanks for the info and yes kudos to JetPens (walking on water for me in all ways possible). I found the #5 o-rings at Home Depot (like a package of 10 for $1.79 perhaps) and have the silicone grease in a little case which I bought from Pendemonium and now have a few Preppy fp's and sign pens to do it with and now it's Saturday, yes....some time to play with it all.

Thanks for your input! Could you describe more where you put the second O-ring? Do you mean in the inside of the barrel? I haven't tried this method before but I would be interested...

I didn't need to apply any tricks to my Parker Frontier. I just took off the converter and filled ink straight in the barrel. No o-rings nor silicon grease or any other sealants. Frontier seems to work pretty nicely as an ED.

Do you guys really roll around with a "disposable" pen that full of ink?

I would think that catastrophic failure would be inevitable, and that's a whole lot of ink being held back by one (or two) O-rings.

Just curious, but why would you not just elect to refill an old cartridge with a syringe?

I take a modded Lamy Vista to uni every day, outfitted with a 1.9 italic nib and loaded with R&K Alt-Goldgrün. I just used silicone wax and no O-rings to seal section/barrel. This NEVER gave me ANY problems in almost 3 months of everyday travel and use. The only incident I had was very, very minor bleeding from the end of the barrel (you need to fill up those air vents with silicone glue). Obviously I did not put it in deep enough, so that some ink got through over time, not much, barely enough to give a mark on a finger tip when pressing against the back. Replaced that glue, this time more thoroughly - problem solved.

Granted, I wouldn't use certain Noodler's inks in there, but then I would not do that in my other pens either - I already get enough stains from the nibs as things are right now...

I use McNett silicone wax, BTW. (no affil. etc. pp.)

As to the last question, it looks way cooler in a clear transparent pen like the Vista, especially with more colorful inks. And the sloshing, most definitely the sloshing. If it were about ink capacity, my Level 65 can do that just as well.

I wouldn't do this with all pens, some pens may have interior parts that will corrode if it comes in contact with water etc

Not all O-Rings of the same size or #5 act the same apparently. I bought some at Home Depot recently (#5) and they're a bit thicker and stretched out more than the ones that Noodler's uses on the Preppy pens that come with the ED bottles to the degree, that they make holding the pen uncomfortable. Jet has been out of the "Noodler's" O-Rings, waiting for then to get some more as they seem to be better than what I have.
