Best cartridge design or best ink in the cartridge?

Current cartridge inks I like:

  • Lamy Violet
  • Mont Blanc British Racing Green and Burgundy
  • Parker Red
  • Waterman Violet

Other than these, I am using bottled inks...

dawned on me that I've been refilling my Lamy carts for a Long time.. they are hanging in there.

the originals, 4 black, sat unused for 2 years.. when I see my early reports, that Lamy black was a nice saturated ink,

(stands out from the other reports in bp/rb).

The Lamy blue bottled ink I refill from is also a nice saturated everyday blue.

Surprised at my answer, I wouldn't have jumped to say Lamy.. good basic ink, solid cartridges.

Lamy blue is saturated? A member says it looks like ballpoint ink.

Pilot/Namiki for me. Nice capacity, and the wide mouth ensures good flow. I'm not a huge fan of the actual ink, but they're also easy to fill with an eye-dropper.

p2p

it's not Noodlers Bulletproof, not like a few PR's, not Aurora Black, but in comparison to Skrip, yes it's quite saturated.

Waterman has good colors, I like Waterman carts.. so it surprised me when I realized that I was overlooking the stellar daily use of Lamy blue.

Lamy blue or Waterman Florida blue?

I quite like the Diamine cartridges. Both PR and Diamine offer a huge variety. I have to admit that one reason I'm so fond of the Diamine ones involves the way they throw in a box of cartridges with an ink order directly from them. It's an excellent if seemingly random sampling of their inks.

ETA: The best cartridge design was the dual ended Parker/Long International Levenger design. The Parker end is terribly hard to pierce, but it's still nice to have that variety.

Are we talking,

(1) best design,

(2) best manufacturing quality,

(3) best ink in the cartridge,

(4) or all the attributes?

BTW, I understand that in one or more cases (Cross comes to mind) the ink in the cartridge may not be the same ink sold by the manufacture in bottles.

YMMV

I chose waterman, but could have just as easily chosen Montblanc. One is a long std international cartridge the other the short, so the purpose of this poll eludes me. Lamy and Pilot are proprietary so if you plan to use a cartridge in those pens that have a captive audience.

The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.

I doubt that there is an answer to that.

My personal preference in International Cartridges is Private Reserve and J. Herbin. I would like to find a few more Montblanc BRG cartridges.

But I also use Sheaffer cartridges and even some Parker ones.

Platinum cartridges are particularly sturdy, do not need any particular alignment after refilling, and have a steel ball to improve flow.

Yes, Platinum carts too!

But they are hard to find in Europe.

I need them for the Nakaya. I bought a cart adapter (to Internationals) for this reason.

I can't find Sailor carts either

Somebody forgot to list the classic Sheaffer cartridge. Elegantly simple: just a hermetically sealed plastic vial, that can be pierced from either end. In fact, if I remember right, the World Book Encyclopedia cutaway diagram of a fountain pen shows a Sheaffer cartridge model.

That would be my favorite, to the extent I like cartridges at all. Which I don't.
