Lamy 1.1 Italics Nib

Dudley

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody! Well, I got hooked by all the hype and ordered a 1.1 mm caligraphy nib from Swisher. I hope it's the same as what you are calling italic. I'm also waiting on a .5mm cursive italic nib (reground from an extra fine point) by Pendemonium. It will be interesting to see what the difference between these will be like.

update: Recvd my nib yesterday. It writes smooth and wet, but I think a little too wide for me; my preference being Japanese fine points. My co-worker loves it, so I might just give it to him. Yeah, get him hooked like I did the other guy.

I bought the pen as an inexpensive experiment to see if I liked using an italic nib on a day-to-day basis. I think that I'm going to invest in a custom ground .6mm cursive italic, so I guess the experiment was a success.

I recommend a Richard Binder ground 0.6mm stub Vanishing Point nib. I got one a little over a week ago and I'm really loving it. The VP has a little spring to it that is just so nice. The 0.6mm stub format gives you nice line variation too, just enough to be stylish without being overdone (full fledged calligraphy has narrow applications).

I bought a Safari charcoal today as I wanted a work pen that took an italic nib.

I immediately bought the 1.1 italic and was shocked when it cost almost as much as the pen. (Different shops) Pen AU$36 Nib AU$23.10.

The nibs can be changed incredibly easily.

I have been very impressed so far with the italic nib - it is a lot smoother than many I have tried.

No great definition between thick and thin lines but does produce a pleasing result.

My only criticism is it seems a bit wet, though that may be that it's not an ink I am used to, or my starting technique - I'll find out next week as the pen gets more use.

The ink in the pen is the Lamy cartridge it came with. I bought a converter as well but don't have ink at work at the moment.

So if you are looking for an italic nib give it a go - at least with these you can change back to original easily.

AU$ = Australian dollar.

£3.50 in the UK for the nib (US$7)

You have my sympathy, but it's a great nib. I have another (almost) on the way.

I've used a .9 italic with excellent results. Your scans of the 1.1 italic are so nice, I'm ready to go try one of those nibs next.

After trying my 1.1mm, my wife bought a Safari with the 1.5mm nib (TWD, £12.99). She says it's the best-writing pen she's ever had.

Excellent news. I have decided to go a bit further "up-market" with a 1.1i nib from TWD (£3.50 + P&P) and a Lamy Accent from eBay (£11.50 inc. postage).

does the italic nib feel scratchy?

especially on the fast loops?

The Calligraphy nib (Sheaffer) can be a little scratchy if I hold it wrong. Less so with the Lamy. But I think that is because the Sheaffer is better at making different lines. I was introduced to these nibs at a pen show, and was really encouraged to try it. I really like it but it's the kind of nib you may want to try somewhere before buying, as there are many variations. You may want to see if you can get to a show where Susan Wirth is displaying and can show you these nibs.

John

Thanks, John:

Is Susan Wirth also in North Carolina? Since living in Nashville makes Asheville, NC a "first choice inexpensive vacation," I hope to see it before the summer heat.

Best,

I got a glossy black Safari with a 1.1 italic nib and I love it; smooth enough for a good-feeling daily writer, but gives a nice character and is all ready when you slip into a little more formal mood.

Pendemonium also sells the option nibs, IIRC.

Hi all,

It seems that there are growing numbers of us who are discovering the character that the Safari/1.1 Italic nib can bring to our writing! In fact, I was so impressed by how this combination rescued my own hand from 'Chicken Scratch Syndrome' that I fitted another 1.1 to my Logo. If only something similar was available for the Waterman Hemisphere .... If anyone has any advice to offer on this last subject, please let me know! You may effect a minor revolution in handwriting!

Regards

Lamy did a really good job with their italic nibs--they're cheap, easily interchangeable and write very well. Definitely worth picking up a few.

I put a 1.1. Italic nib on my safari long time ago too. However my experience was that the feed could not keep up with the wider nib and the writing it produced was pale scatchy albeit with decent line variation. It was not my cup if tea. From this experience I can't help wondering if was the Lamy joy feed long with the nib that contributed to a successful outcome for the OP.

I have several 1.1's and 1.5's and a 1.9 which is use on my several Safari's and Joy's. All of them write smoothly. I love the 1.9, although I only use it a few times per week. I use the 1.5's and 1.1's daily, and don't hesitate to use the 1.1 for formal writing. The variety and interchangeability of nibs is what kept me buying Lamy's. I only wish I had bought the 1.1's and 1.5's in multiples, instead of one at a time, to save on shipping costs, LOL.
