The Nib

In the 1960's Soyuz barrel, there are this inscription:

"золотое перо 906"

I came to Google Translator and the meaning of "золотое" is GOLD. Wow!!! A gold made nib!!!

But my happiness faded, when I submitted the entire phrase ("золотое перо") and the translation is GOLDEN NIB...

Well... 906 appears to be the grade of gold... 906 / 1000 ~ 21.744 kt... I never hear about a 22k nib, but maybe we have a 22 kt gold filled steel nib.

I've bought an used pen and the nib is very "scratchy"...

Solution?!? An old and ruined Parker 51 Vacumatic has donated a REAL gold nib.

My Soyuz is now a GREAT pen...

Look at my horse, my horse is amazing!!!

I have several Soyuz Russian pens and a few other very basic ones.

The Soyuz was the premier pen: it was a copy of a Vacumatic-filler Parker 51 and it was quite well made. There were also some accordion filler pens and a few syringe fillers. Most russians, however, had access to chinese Hero pens, which were affordable and reliable. Some very fancy Vac-51 Soyuz pens were given as awards to plant managers meeting their production quota and other similar targets. There was also a popular desk set inspired by Sputnik and having a space-motif base.

I realize the post is a little old, but I was wondering if you had more information on this desk set? Perhaps a picture? Or vintage advertisement?

Might be the one in my profile. Sorry don't have access to better pics today. This one is 1959, it's a space commerative. The one I have was made in Leningrad, but I am pretty sure there was at least one variation when I saw them on ebay and bought mine about a year ago. Has a hooded nib, but although the pen looks new, the nib is split and so I can't speak to how it writes. I have not tried lately, but I could not get the hood off to replace the nib. It's a piston filler pen. Can take some pics and post them this weekend,.

I was using mine while home sick the other day; the plaque is... similar, I guess... to one mounted on Luna 2, the first earthly object to touch the moon. The original item may be thought of as "shrapnel addressed to future generations", since it touched really hard.

It's not the most willing writer in the world, but there's a strange and appealing approach to flexibility in its point.

I might have to get one of these some day to pair up with my Vostok watch. :D

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

Me too.....I have a Vostok watch (excellent) and a Vega radio (temperamental) and assorted other Russian products of varying dodginess......the idiosyncratic nature tends to appeal to me.
