Red Ink Cartridges for Cross?

GNL

Recommended Posts

Cross apparently only makes blue, blue-black and black cartridges. Does anybody make red ink cartridges that will fit Cross fountain pens?

Current favorite pen: Montblanc 144 Meisterstuck purchased at Art Brown in 1984. After decades, every part has been replaced except the nib. Still a gorgeous writing instrument, rock-solid reliable, gives me hours of pleasure to use.

Current favorite ink: Colorverse Supernovs

Current favorite paper: Romeo notepads

Probably not because the Cross cartridge is a proprietary shape.

But, not all is lost! Simply retain two empty cartridges (remember, you need the second up at the top of the barrel) and flush them out with water 'til they're sparkly clean. Go to your local pharmacy or medical supplier and ask for a syringe with a 'drawing needle', which has a blunt end and is much less likely to cause injury. I'd suggest a 5ml syringe, they're about the handiest size. Find yourself some nice red ink (or any other colour for that matter) and use the syringe to fill one of the empty cartridges. Fit the cartridges and start writing! Lather, rinse, repeat. :)

I write, therefore I...write a little more.

My comment is similar in nature to the other commenter, but I'd just get another fillable cartridge. They are a few bucks on e-bay and worth the money. You can rinse and reuse it too... and you don't have to get the needle involved. --CrissCross

No red cartridges for Cross, although to add to your list brown is also available. For red the most staight foward option is an ink converter and bottled ink, which also opens up the options to any red ink and not just one prepackaged choice. I've never had cause to use red, but there are some interesting inks out there such as Noodler's Dragon's Napalm - just the name makes it interesting.

I was browsing around today and came across these, may be worth a shot. If anyone gets them, I wouldn't mind hearing how they are. I would get them but I am not a fan of red ink.

Those look like real Cross cartridges. For $13, you might as well give it a shot.

My bet's on them being from Private Reserve. :)

Genuine American manufacturers are pretty thin, and PR have only recently moved into making cartridges in the universal/international sizing. Cross carts are very close in size and shape, so I'd imagine tooling up for them wouldn't be that difficult.

I found some on eBay and liked them. They're from a company called www.pensavings.com. (no affiliation) I bought red and black cartridges. The red cartridges were great, but the black cartridges were VERY bleedy and just about made them unuasable from too much ink coming out. I dont know if it was a funky batch or what.

The red however are fantastic. I'll give them a two thumbs up. A vibrant red slightly on the pink side, but definatley red. I'll see if I can scan some samples.

Here's the scan of the colors. I used the same pen for all of them. I used PR Fiesta Red as a comparative sample. Strangely the black cartridge didn't bleed that much. It's not a really dark black like Noodlers or Aurora (the two i use the most), but it works here in the office. As for waterfastness. The Pensavings red washed out immediately, but the black was still easily readable after 2 minute soak under running water.

Hope this helps.

p.s. I've tried to attach the image. But nothing shows up. :-/ I'll retry later
