I would like to remove a bad nib from a Parker 21 and replace with good 21 nib coming off of a damaged Parker 21 body. How do I do this? Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve.

First, go to Richard Binder's site: http://www.richardspens.com/ Look at the Reference Info section and under Pen Profiles take a look at the Parker 21 profile. This will give you the basics of what you're dealing with.

It's been awhile since I've had a "21" apart, but I believe you remove the shell from the nib/section in a fashion similar to the "51". The biggest problem is the plastic of the 21 shell - it is thin and fragile, prone to cracking. Use of heat to aid removal is advisable but keep the temperatures low - 140 degrees or so. I would be reluctant to grasp the shell with section pliers but would use a rubber sheet.

Hopefully someone with more expertise/experience will chime in and correct any misinformation I've given you.

Good luck.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

Hold the barrel with one hand, unscrew the hood in a counterclockwise direction.

If the hood does not move, use a hair dryer to apply heat to the area in front

of the clutch ring. Apply the heat only to the area 1/4 inch from and to the

clutch ring, turn the pen so the heat is applied evenly.

Clean the collector well, please note the wide channel is on top.

Actually, there are three different nib/feed and hood configurations on a Parker 21.

The first one has a shell around a plain feed and nib inserted into the section as usual, but under the hood. You must of course unscrew the hood, but then the nib and feed just pull out of the section.

The second version uses the same nib, but it is set with a different feed directly into the hood itself. You must also remove the hood, but the nib and feed stay in it and must be pushed out from the back. To re-install, you must get the nib lined up with the recess cast in the hood, which is a bit of a trick. You also have to get the feed and nib all the way back into place, another trick as you cannot push directly on the tip -- good way to bend up a new nib.

For both of these I think you can still find new nibs, or you can use one from a dead pen.

The third variation uses the same style nib/feed and collector as the Parker 41 -- very similar to the "51" but the collector is shorter. When you unscrew the hood, you will find a tubular nib and a very small feed installed in a finned collector. You can just pull the nib and feed out, you don't usually have to move the collector. Leaving it in plaace simplifies getting the hood aligned correctly.
