Montblanc Meisterstück 149 Diplomat – Oblique Broad Nib Review

It dawned upon me that this is the kind of pen that I would like to pass it on to my son if I do have one in the years to come.

Your daughter is not going to be happy about this.

Well, she will get something from my wife then

Nice review Roger, and excellent pictures! And what a beautiful surprise, to end up with that 75th anniversary nib... Take good care of her!

Hi Joey,

thanks I will! Now that you had mentioned the pictures, I had been trying very hard to resist the urge to get a better digital camera to take better pictures of my pens! Has this happened to anyone? Shelling out good money to buy cameras so that they can take better shots of their FP collection?

Which nib are you getting?

It's a M but I'm hoping to also get a OBB.

A great review. I've been thinking about getting a MB149 with a B nib. Now, I need to consider the OB option before I make my final decision. A tough one to make, as I don't want to make a wrong choice because the price of each pen is rather expensive.

My collection: 149 EF/F/B/OBB, Collodi B/Twain F/Mann F, 146 M, Silver Barley F, M1000/M800 B'o'B/M800 Tortoise/Sahara/415 BT/215/205 Blue Demo, Optima Demo Red M/88 EF & Italic/Europa, Emotica, 2K/Safaris/Al-Stars/Vista, Edson DB/Carene BS, Pilot 845/823/742/743/Silvern/M90/Makies, Sailor Profit Realo M/KOP Makies/Profit Makies/Profit 21 Naginata MF&M/KOP/KOP Mosaiques/Sterling Silvers,Platinum #3776 Celluloids/Izumos/Wood pens/Sterling Silvers,YoL Grand Victorian, and more (I lost counting)

Thank you for a great review of one of my all time favorite pens.

I am highly prejuduced. I have and love four 149's with different nibs - F, M, B, and BB. Each has its own personality and I use them depending on the kind of writing I am doing - general, business, decorative, etc. But I do actually prefer the B nib above the others. Its stub like grind that allows for a narrower horizintal line is unique among B nibs. The pen itself is large, but the nib is proportionately large, which only the Pel M-1000 can compete with. That large nib makes this pen model truely special.

I will stick with the regular B nib. After 50 years of FP use, I have never caught on to oblique nibs. I just do not turn my pens enough to justify an oblique nib. But, we argee fully on the merits of the B nib.

wow :yikes:

In the days gone by, people believed that if a person touched an object, that object would form a bond with a part of their soul.

Today such a thought seems almost absurd....Until you enter the realm of Montblanc's master craftsmen.

Great review. I bought my first 149 after a long wait and it became a cherished pleasure. I had it in my sport coat pocket when I arrived at the airport from out of town on a business trip. The lovely woman who met me at the airport took my sport coat and folded it over her arm as I loaded my luggage in the trunk of her car.

When we arrived at her home I discovered that my cherished 149 was gone from my pocket and it dawned on both of us that it had fallen out when she folded the coat over her arm. She knew the history of the 149 so she was equally upset. I couldn't be mad at her but I was upset.

The next day she arrived at my office with a new 149, a bottle of MB black ink and a bottle of Jack Daniels. All was instantly forgiven.

We've been married for almost 12 years now. biggrin.gif

Just received my new -cherished- OB 149, which I had ordered in March 09!!!

I was half-expecting to get a 75th anniversary nib too, but ended up with a normal one.

Am I right to feel that the stubbish character is even more accentuated by the oblique-ness?

(my scientific mind tells my by a ratio of cosinus 15°)

Beautiful pen and photos, Shinchan....

One day I hope to get a 149 and be able to take decent photos of my pens.... ;)

Just curious, what did it cost to get another nib?

Thanks.

Didn't cost me anything, since I did the nib exchange within 6 weeks of purchase.

Wow, that's great, but MB did that even though you bought 149 off of ebay?

Hi ArchiMark,

I bought this pen from a reseller who managed to get the papers stamped by an AD before shipping the pen to me. How he does it is beyond me. MB was willing to do the nib exchange since the papers were stamped. But I was told they will not do a one for one pen exchange if a pen is bought from an AD and not from a MB boutique.

Great review, very interesting. I think that I could go at least an OBB or an OBBB for the size of this pen. I've got an OBB on a 146 Legrand at the moment and it is fine, but I think I can go one better with a 149.

Thanks

Hi Lolx,

I think you should go for a 149 with OBBB, since that's the only nib size exclusive to 149. Don't forget to post the writing sample when you do get one!
