Noodler's GI Green

It looks like it starts out as a J.Herbin Vert Olive, and then goes camouflage...

I received my bottle of G.I. Green yesterday. The green-to-orange transition seems to depend on the paper used. I got absolutely no change on Staple's bagasse or HP Premium Choice Laser paper, but the transition's very strong on the generic 20# copier paper that I have.

Oh yes, I'm getting this ink.

 

Make sure you are careful to get this original color, then - Noodler's has recently reformulated GI Green. It now looks to be much darker.

 

I know Pear Tree Pens still has this original GI Green.

I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words about my review! Also wanted to share this update from Noodler's, as this ink has sadly been reformulated:

 

"GI Green has been reformulated into a darker and more durable green with improved multi-spectrum shading. It is no longer as close a replica to the conventional green of the war years that it was originally based upon. It is now slightly less true to the historic accuracy of the "government issue green" color of the "regular" uniform and classic army Willys jeep - but it is hoped the utility to the modern user has been greatly enhanced. The water resistant conventional ink now has shades of British racing green (at the request of GI Green's more numerous and insistent British following) which is also still in line with certain darker green jungle and hedgerow campaign uniforms.

 

In terms of vintage style/conventional water resisting inks - the V-mail ink series remains the best value for modern ink customers on the market today (far below the $35 per 45 ml some other companies charge for similar inks - their rate being approximately $70 per our $12 bottle size!)."

Thank you for the heads up on this one, Lynne, and GreenVelvet. I had already planned to order GI Green, which has great appeal to me. Then again, Lynne, it may be your excellent review that shows the ink in it's best light.

The reformulation is an unfortunate development. In original form, GIG had a distinctive retro look.

Maybe Nathan, with his love for creative product names, should market a Private Thomas Atkins Green, or a 23rd Regiment of Foot Green or Tommy Green for the British Market, and IwoJima GI Green in the original formula?

I'm getting a couple of bottles of the good old stuff, if I can.

Private Thomas Atkins, No. 6 Company, 23rd Regiment of Foot, British Army, is a "speciman name" used in a sample to demonstrate the filling out of an Army form in 1815. This is thought to be the origin of the vernacular "Tommy", reference to British Soldiers.

That would depend. I have a bottle of the old stock and saw a few weeks ago that it had been reformulated. I rushed to get another bottle before it was too late (not from Pear Tree), but I'm afraid I missed the bus.

 

BTW - a warning, both of my bottles came very full, just opening the cap was enough to pull off ink and have it run down the side of the bottle. So in one respect, I am now an Axis ace.

I did order from Pear Tree, and Ryan (through e-mail) told me he only has the old stock.

I was trying to order a bottle of old, and a sample of new, but couldn't get the new.

Yes, and for some reason, I find it very enjoyable working my way below the meniscus, and through the mouth of the bottle before I even get to the belly. It's a very generous helping of ink!

Yup, Nathan's generous, no doubt about it. But this bottle was more full than most. I'll be buying another just to make sure I have a pristine label, this one is too good to lose.

I just bought and reviewed the reformulated G. I. Green, and now realize the OLD stuff is what I really wanted!

 

Orange halo! I'm sold.

 

Who still sells the old formula, if anyone?

 

 

PS: I'll be offering a few samples of the new a little later.
