Parker Jr. Duofold - Identification of Numbers on Nib

Well, I've finally been successful in uploading pictures. This is a pen that I described as not showing the 14K gold marking on the Nib but as a member so kindly told me, all duofolds were made with 14K nibs. I am posting the pictures as I don't yet know what the numbers mean. Thank you.

Judi:

Beautiful pen. Colour I've not often seen in Duofolds, but I'm no expert on this. Maybe a better term is less common colour. Similiar to Red and Black Tiger Stripe Duofold of Shepherd and Zazove's book. Your's is a a bit more purplish than the one pictured in book. Looking at the placement of the # and it's size relative to the Parker imprint size this is a 1931 era Duofold nib. Probably proper for the colour of the pen. In 1932 Parker went to a duotone nib to compete better with Sheaffer and their duotone Lifetime nib. I'm guessing the s/n on the nib is a similar move to compete with Sheaffer. This is not stated in the Duofold book. Looks like the serial # is only found on 1931 and 1932 Parker nibs. Thanks for sharing the photos with us, quite attractive colour and nice condition pen for an almost 80 year old pen. Jim

Wow. Thanks for the great information Jim. I found this exact pen (minus the serial number on the nib) on sale on one site for approximately 245. Or close to that amount. The very end of the nib on my pen makes me still question that it is 14K gold as a wonderful member said previously of all duofolds. Anyway, the highest anyone has gone so far is 14.99. Maybe it's not meant to leave my house. I hate parting with any of my collection but it allows me to buy others. Do you know anything any Eversharp? While searching for a Jorg Hysek Pen that I have misplaced, I found, just yesterday, an old very inexpensive Waterman Fountainpen, a very old Eversharp which I have not been able to find (posted on the Eversharp page of FPN with pics) and another fountain pen that was more of a fashion type pen. Still can't find the Jorg Hysek. Of course I have the original box, papers, refill and leather holder as the pen did not have a clip. I'll find it soon but was very happy to find these other pens. Thanks again Jim. Take care. Judi

Judi:

I think a couple of snipers are waiting out there. Ive done that myself, watched a low bid pen and at last minute stuck in what I was willing to pay. Several times on a Pristine Sheaffer Jade Flat top and a Black and Wahl Gold Seal, personal point. The price went from $80 on former to over $200 in last minute. But I got it. The Wahl got out of control it went from $50 or so to $275 and I lost it. Plenty of people lurk out there doing nothing till the last minute hoping to get a sumgai/sumgal deal. So don't give up yet. One way to prevent this is to set a reserve. A figure you won't sell it for less than. When you bid on these you get a "reseve not met" notice if you're under the level the seller set. The message is, don't give up yet. Take my advice with a salt shaker of salt. I've never sold on Ebay, but I spend way too much time and way, way too much money there. I know nada about Wahl /Eversharp. The Gold emblem you describe and show does look like a Wahl Gold Seal. Kind of like a Sheaffer Lifetime, ie high quality, close to top of the line pen. I've never heard of it being on an Eversharp. The cap band looks like a Wahl Doric. But again, I am no expert in much pen wise. I'd appeal to Dr. Isacsson or Syd Sapperstein for final call. The latter has a web site and is aka Wahlnut on FPN. Be bold send him a back channel querry with photos. Bot are great Pen resources and very helpful and friendly

. Good luck on your sale, Jim

Yes, I think I did get a response from Syd last evening. There was a link to his site through FPN. I have to check out this "back channel" you've told me about. Can't find an explanation, but I did figure out the pictures. I changed my screen name, as you can see. I'll tell you once I'm fully awake what he said. I did put a reserve on it the Parker so I won't get stuck. And, yes, I've lost some great items to snipers as well. I have a friend who is an estate, antique dealer who has been selling on ebay for many years, as well as antique shows, etc. She has been a great help to me. I have some a beautiful solid gold set, fountain pen and pencil Wahl/Eversharp in original case, highly ornate that was one of the last gifts my late husband gave me (also a jeweler). In fact, that's were I got most of my pens, from the two of them. He always sent them to the FP Hospital for restoration but it's been so long that in some cases they may need to back. I don't know enough about them yet to understand how long bladders, etc. hold up. I use them. Of course, not everyday, but I switch off. So I suppose I'm not a true collector but a true user. Then I get stuck on some of my favorite ballpoint or rollerball pens that also love. What can I say. I think I told you my husband just bought me a MB from UK which turned out to be a fake. Waiting for everyone to decide whether or not to give me my money back. I knew as soon as I got it. MB was terrific with me. The service person in Texas is fabulous in case you ever have to work with them. What a great person. Maybe you can give me an idea of good places to sell, if I do decide. I tried a couple but at the time they were not buying gold pens (also have a great Waterman gold fancy which I don't use that often.) Sorry for going on. Have a wonderful Friday. Judi
