Review: Pilot Grance, Sterling Silver

I just purchased the plastic version of this pen. I guess Con-70 doesn't fit in it; correct?

(I know I bumb an old thread, but this is not a bad thing since Pilot Grance are fairly unknown pens with a unique Art Nouveau nib stamping and quite an affordable price for the version in plastic).

Generally Pilot nib sizes run one size smaller than their western counterparts, but people in other threads over here have mentioned Pilot B nibs being the exception and I find this to be true with this pen as well. This B writes probably as fat as any western B and the line produced is fatter than the line from my MB149 which has a juicy M nib.

.

Good observation hari. I noticed this also on the pilot celemo. I have got a M nib which writes broader than a Pilot tank (or) Metropolitan M. It is also a tad broader than a western F. I also saw some pictures of Pilot gold nibs in FPN. I think there is more tipping material than a pilot steel nib. Even in your comparison with the ptl-5000A, the pilot had more iridium.

Anyway good review of a nice pen

Anyway good review of a nice pen

Thanks! Wrote this review nearly 6 years back. :)

In the meanwhile, Pilot has discontinued this model and they have released a new replacement model called the Grance NC, also in Sterling. I have purchased the new model last year and if I get the time and the mood, I will review it.

Did you also notice that the pilot gold nibs are wider than the steel nibs of the same nib grade

Time to update this thread. I recently lucked into the Namiki version of this pen. The Pilot Grance used to be sold in the US market under the brand name Namiki. I had bought a few examples of the striped sterling silver Pilot Grance, but somehow I never could buy the Barley version and then Pilot discontinued this model and released a revamped version in all white trim.

Now with this pen, I have an example of the old style Grance in Barley and also the variety of the Namiki imprint. Some pictures:

Thanks Maverink. Actually, tarnishing is the hallmark of true sterling silver. One way to keep the pen spot free is to use it regularly. I have to review that all silver Grance, but that one does not have the blue lacquer cummerbund that this one has.

Great review with excellent pictures.

It almost makes me want to use a <B> nib. I said, "ALMOST."

Thank you for a well thought out and succinct review.

Hi Sonik, I recommend sunshine cloth if you ever have the need to polish off the tarnish from silver. It is easier and you can more precise while gently applying it so that the gold plated areas can be deftly avoided, otherwise, the plating will come off from there as well.

Thank you for the detailed review. I love the barley corn finish compared to the striped/flute version. As you said, the new full silver models seem to be rather dull..

I just realized that this pen, and all the other Pilot Grance versions, are closely inspired by Waterman Man pens. Do you happen to have both pens for comparison?

Cheers
