Ratnamson 42P

Wanted to share some photos of my Ratnamson model 42P Silver fountain pen. I chose the plain body silver model (P denotes plain). The interiors of the pen are made of Black Hard Rubber, The barrel overlay and the cap are solid silver. The 14Ct conical nib is hand hammered to give the shape and engraved with my first and last name. The tip has been flame torch welded at my request, usually they use reistance welding to fix the tip. This is my first Gold nibbed Ratnamson.

They did a good job of engraving my name on the nib in the arch, however I would have preferred a better job of engraving their slogan "Famous Ratnam and Sons, 14Ct"

I received this pen over a month back, initially the pen had some flow problems, I sent the pen back to Dr. Ramanamurthy for adjustment and two weeks later it returned a champion writer. Here is a writing sample on a cheap writing pad with quink black.

The pen is very comfortable to write unposted. I have not measured but I was told that the silver weight of this pen is 40 gms, so the pen weighs more. I paid around INR6,600/-(~USD135) for the pen including shipping. The pen took 5 weeks to be delivered after inital order.

Comments are welcome.

Regards,

Hari

Hi Hari...thats a super looking pen...and I like its unostentatious look...plain...I also liked the shape of the nib...how is it joined? Your name is very nicely engraved, and as you remarked, they could have done their name as nicely engraved as well...and the point to be noted is that the pen had flow problems and you had sent it back and it was rectified and is now a champion writer...very Ratnam like...

It is your first Ratnam gold nib pen and I am glad that you waited for a really super pen...my next target...but remember...no FPs for a year...hopefully, I will break this resolve soon...lets see...in the meanwhile, enjoy the Silver Ratnam...

Regards,

Jai

Dear Hari! Nice grab! Enjoy your new pen! Conical nib has come out nice. Being hand made, not perfect though! But, what is 'perfect' in life?

Ratnamsons gold nibs some time have flow problems! I had in 32, same problem but resolved now following some suggestion from you!

Best wishes,

Abhik

Thank you Nikhil, Jai, Tom and Abhik for your kind comments.

Jai, the nib is threaded onto the section and yes, the service provided by Dr. Ramanamurthy was very personal and second to none.

How big is the pen ?

It sure looks like a giant gold nib.

Do they take international orders ?

Hi, I am sorry I neglected to mention the dimensions, here they are:

Capped: 140mm

Barrel incl nib: 127mm

Posted 170mm

Nib length:25mm

Gripping section diameter: 10mm

Yes they do take international orders. You may drop an email to Dr. Ramanamurthy who is the owner of Ratnamson and is also the person who makes the nibs. ratnamballpen@yahoo.co.in or call him +91-883-2498782 after 19:00hrs IST. He can also make a pen as per your design or drawing. I wanted an even bigger pen but he advised against it telling me quite rightly that it would become too heavy to be usable.

Best,

Hari

Hi Hari,

Thanks for the review of your new Ratnam pen. Looks MAJESTIC.

Like you mentioned, they could have made a better job while engraving their logo on the nib.

Could you tell the advantages of the type of welding you chose for the tip of the nib. Also, please let us know the filling system used by the pen.

Thanks & Regards,

Gampu.

Some people say that leads to a better joint. Since the option was available I went for it on a whim. The pen is a regular eyedropper ED filled pen.

BTW if you ever visit Madras visit "Sukra" opp. the Mylapore tank. I saw a nice collection of silver pens with them.

Since I carry the pen in a pouch, I removed the clip and made it clipless, I will post some pictures tomorrow.

Regards,

Hari

Hari, now removing of clip opens up another vista! Now tell us will this silver might tarnish in Mumbai weather? Are you using it on regular basis? Is this pen pouch you are using is a leather one or velvet?

Waiting for new pictures of clipless majesty!

Abhik.

Clipless pen is looking better than before Hari! I simply forgot to check your updated post!! :)

Q1. Do they do filigree work? Some floral filigree in the mid body area instead of complete solid silver? Like CS special edition?

May be?

Best wishes,

Abhik.

No filigree by Ratnamson...

Thanks Jon! Full credit to Dr. Ramanamurthy.

What a marvellous thing, for relatively little money.

This is a beautiful pen -- thank you for these photographs.
