Pelikan Celebry 580 Fountain Pen

I just received my first Pelikan fountain pen, a NOS Agate Celebry 580 EF. I won it on eBay. The seller is "martini.de" whos shop is named "Best Buy Corner". It ships from Germany. It is a great looking pen. The agate color is has a beautiful, shiny black marble appearance. It is nice and just thin enough for my taste. It feels wonderful in the hand and has more weight than most. I immediately popped a cartridge in to try it out. It writes like a dream! The ink flow is smooth and the lines are nice and crisp.

One defect - the cap snaps on but is loose and twirls and jiggles. It doesn't fall off but I can see it becoming looser over time.

Also, it didn't come with a converter so I searched online. It was difficult to find one as most sites were out of stock. I did finally find one at the Colorado Pen Company and am waiting for it to arrive.

All-in-all, I am happy with this pen. I got it at a great price and I can see myself using this pen everyday. It is already my favorite. Too bad about the cap. Chartpak said this defect is not repairable but recommended that I send it to Pelikan repair in Germany. I don't know what they can do if it's not repairable though.

Congrats on your first Pelikan pen, piplup. The seller, Regina, is usually good about handling pen issues. I recommend you contact her about the cap issue.

Pelikan makes great nibs and I'm sure this one will wet your appetite for another in due time. :)

Here's a stock photo from Pelikan of the 580:

Once you get your issue resolved, I'll be looking forward to your full review if you're so inclined to write it (we don't have one yet for the 580).

Thanks MYU!

I did email Regina about the pen. I received one response: "Should be nothing wrong with the pen. Push caps are not so close than twist caps." I have emailed her again explaining that it is VERY loose. I am waiting for her response.

Yes, I want another one already! Hoping for a 580 or 590 w/a F point in a green or blue.

I will definitely do a longer review after I've had some time to use it.

I recommend describing the looseness. There are two considerations: up-down and rotation.

UP-DOWN: The cap should click into place and have minimal or no up-down movement. If lightly pulling on the cap creates a gap of more than 0.5mm, then air can get in and dry out the nib.

ROTATION: After clicking the cap into place, there should be minimal or no rotation of the cap possible. If you can rotate the cap by gently dragging your finger across it, then it is too loose.

Thanks for the advice. I did give her a complete description of the problem and she responded that she is willing to take it back. :) I just won a 590 from her which I'm sure I will love!

That explains why the nib is so dry every time I want to use it I guess. Do you think cleaning it more often will help? I read somewhere that soapy water works well?

Very nice! Is this your first Celebry? You'll probably want another one soon. It's hard not to love the Celebry after trying one. They are addictive.

I was thinking about getting a 570 too but I happened upon a 590 on the German eBay and had to have it. (The prices seem to go a lot higher on that site.) I got carried away and spent way more than I planned but we all have our weak moments  I just sent my 580 off in the mail to Germany, returning it because of the loose cap. I can't wait for the 590 to get here! I'm looking forward to using it.

Enjoy!

Yes, this is my first Celebry. I would enjoy purchasing more Celebrys but it seems to me that they are very hard to find. I've been looking.... :crybaby:

I really enjoy writting with this pen.....
