Montblanc Pistons

My question is if it is normal for there to be about 1/2 turn of play before the piston engages.

This play is perfectly normal and a design feature. This prevents a messy ejection of ink due to an inadvertent piston knob movement.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Thank you for the answer.

It looks like my pen is somewhere between 1965 and 1968 from looking at the "Dating 149's" post. Certainly a wealth of information here.

Thank you! :notworthy1:

Apart from screws how are/were snowcaps fitted? I have a 146 cap and it has no screw where my others do. Is it a snap fit that needs a dedicated removal tool ??

In this case, the dome is seated on a threaded post. The post is integral to the cap, but otherwise fits the same way as with the machine bolt.

Thanks for that. So its a case of gripping the dome (somehow) and simply unscrewing ?

May I kindly ask you to let me knwo how much does it cost to replace piston on MB 149? Your help i smuch appreciated. O by the way I live in Australia - Perth. Kind Regards

I just got my 149 (c.2003) back from Mont Blanc service. They replaced the piston and a few other parts along with the barrel (it had a crack) for $76. You basically send it to them for repair for the flat fee and they fix everything pretty much.

Hi MB Service is excellent. We can have a great confidence in MB for their product's support. They are the best  . Htin

...yest hey are the best...but they are the most expensive too.... :crybaby: :crybaby:

....quel che c'è...non manca!!

Wonderful thread. I asked some questions in the other thread Hari started about pistons here, that may be handy as a cross reference to this pinned thread.

Thanks so much for that additional thread. I have all these copied. Is there another set of assembly/disassembly thread by Kisch that I read mentioned? So far Hari's has been the best for removing the piston and getting it put back in correctly.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Well...it was good reading on the the pistons of MB149. In the last 2 hours I had both of my MB149s malfunction. Both of them were serviced withing the last 3 months: fine point about a 3 months ago and the OM nib about 2 weeks ago. The MB 149 F nib the piston broke/malfunctioned when i tried to fill it with ink. The one with the OM nib started writing dry and very wet, and all of sudden when I removed the cap the lip collar was loose then the entire section just slipped off. I wondered what happened to the pink rubber gasket stuff, there were some remnants of it but very little. The collar looked as if someone tried to glue it to the section! So I am sending both to the MB servoce in Texas.

I had issues with the Service department when the pen came back for XF nib, it wrote like a medium and the ink flowed like a river. I confirmed with service it was XF point however when I looked under the loop the time spacing was about 0.9 mm, and the cap and the section threads did not match allowing the pen not to be capped. The Service dept serviced it and the result is what I notedin the previous paragraph.

Furthermore, at another Service dept interaction, the pen came back diassembled the piston, cap, section were all in individual parts and I wondered if it came with assembly instructions! What is really funny is that I sent the pen back, enclosed pictures, notes, and followed up with a telephone call. The pen came back disassembled 3 times! I called the Boston beautique for help and the VP of MB Service called and made sure that it was assembled and working correctly. Too bad the parts are not available either with John Motishaw or Richard Binder who would do a fantastic job in servicing the pens.

Has anyone else had expereinces with the MB Service? I'd be interested in your stories.

This thread is a great read for someone like me--new to vintage MBs.

My thanks to the original poster and all others who contributed to the thread.

I found this little breadown picture/diagram worthy of a few looks

Unfortunatly I was not able to tell if the nib/feed is threaded or friction fit to the section? I have just dismounted the piston mechanism to clean up what I suspect is old ink residues (beeing utterly nervous during the process!). I seems to have succedet, thou - even if I have yet to lube & assemble it.

Lots of Thanks for the diagram posted by PenNut in april 2009, which proved highly useful!!

Regards,

LBj :happyberet:
