You heard ethernautrix! The fellowship pen is simply amazing: clipless, black, octagonal, flat-top -- how could you go wrong? :) I've held the prototype in my hand, and, while I'm not a Fellowship member (yet), this pen is going to draw me in -- I can see it! (Got to start budgeting for this right now!)

I'm not big on Maki-e (yet), but the plain Urushi Danitrios I saw were absolutely gorgeous! I figure my first such pen should be one in that gorgeous, almost translucent reddish-black, in one size below the Mikado (is that a Densho? Pardon my ignorance) and clipless, preferably an eyedropper-filler. In other words, the pen reduced to its bare essentials, and those essentials refined to perfection!

At the meet today I unveil the prototype in raw ebonite which will be used as the pen base for our LE. It is a flat top octagon an offspring of Genkai and octagon!!

Will there be any inscription on the pen i.e. "The Fellowship" in Kanji? Or some sort of markings? Just wondering. :)

Mmmmm, deep purple undertone. We even get a great new special urushi! This is going to be fabulous, along with the Haiku. I'm definitely impressed! Thanks, Kevin! (great "story") And thank you Pen Posse!

Lisa, how did I know you would walk away with a bat pen? And now I'm curious about the Russian-like pen...

One pen to rule them all :)

There will be a haiku on the pen (it's somewhere in this thread).

What a wonderful pen. I want one too. Flattop and clipless...just what i like...when can i order? :)

The prototype looks beautiful, and I am glad to see that the section has a bit of a "lip".

Will this pen post?...

As with most urushi pens, posting is not recommended. This pen can not be posted. It looks small next to Genkai... so are many pnes :-), But it really is not that small. I'll take some comparason shots to other more common pens later.

Initially, they told me a smaller octagon, in my mind I was picturing same size and shape as the current octagon, but just smaller, but I am pleasantly surprised that it is similar yet different.

Best,

Kevin

Oh Kevin,

That is just beautiful.....exceeds my wildest dreams....except for my Tame-nuri clipless Mikado and my brown Kara-nuri :puddle:

I think I will have to go over to my pen collection and see which ones need new homes. Sometimes, they jump out ....and other times, they are not as willing

Fountain Pen Abundance

OK gang - I was skimming through recent posts in the FPN site and came across this thread about this "fan club" for Dani Trios! Up to now, I have mostly been a lurker on the FPN site :ninja:. However, reading everyone's feedback and the excitement about a new model of pen from Dani Trio inspired me to ask Kevin to "sign me up" and to introduce myself to you all.

My name is Chris, I have been involved in the hobby since about 1990. I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota - so hooking up with you California folks regularly may be problematic! I do have clients in SoCal and the Bay area and a sister division of our company in the Irvine area and make it out west several times a year - so who knows... I see some folks on the DT Fellowship list with locations in my neck of the woods, so if this Fan Club grows maybe we'll have to start up a "MidWest Chapter"! Although I do not own any of the Dani maki-e/urushi pens yet, I have been eyeing :puddle: several different Dani Trio models along with several models from Nakaya. If this team of afficianados is going to come up with a special octagon version in purple, then my first urushi Dani Trio is decided!

Although my collection numbers several hundred pens, I have not been very active in the pen community for the last 7 years; a long story wrapped around a forced career change from airline pilot to teacher to business executive after the events of 9-11 threw my former airline and the industry/country/world into tumult. However over the last year I began using my pens again daily at work and it has brought me back into the online pen community. I do still get some odd looks at work or in meetings from the "uninitiated" and the "bic stick" crowd - some of whom basically consider using a fountain pen sort of like an unusual affectation like walking around with a riding crop or wearing a top hat :bonk: . Some of the uninitiated I have converted (it's always fun to prosletyze why fountain pens are the path to writing enlightenment and with some of the cheap Chinese pens now available, it's easy to hand out "starter" pens like the Gideons). And for those folks who don't see anything special in how/what they write - well, I'm fine with someone keeping the Bic/Waterman company in business. For me, it's amazing how using a fountain pen (and the rituals that go with it) slows my hectic day down a little by forcing a different tempo in the thoughts and notes I jot down and in the messages I send to people. In my business, I manage several hundred hard-working, dynamic folks and get upwards of 300 emails a day - so for me, pen and ink make my day a little more measured and a little more creative.

Back in the early 1990's when I started collecting, I really steered clear of most new pens and kind of developed a bias against new pens. IMHO back then most of the new pens and LE's were too expensive, many were too gaudy, and a large percentage were not very good writers. So I started out primarily focused on collecting/repairing vintage pens. I have a pretty nice collection of vintage Sheaffer Balance, Parker Vacumatic, Eversharp Skyline and Waterman overlay pens - all of which I have found/repaired myself (thank you Frank Dubiel and Father Terry for your sage advice and repair tips over the years!) However since I started in the hobby, times have changed - the choices in new fountain pens have increased tremendously. Penmakers like Dani Trio are one of the reasons that over the last year I have now jumped into buying and using new pens in addition to vintage - exceptionally good craftsmanship, great design, affordable price point, and they understand what it takes to make a pen that writes right!

I currently own 3 of the Dani Trio Tosca's (green ripple ebonite, brown ripple ebonite, and the blue/purple celluloid) along with a Dani Trio Brillante set (fountain pen and ballpoint). Great pens, and they are regularly in my daily rotation - right now the brown ebonite Tosca is up to bat. The last 12 months have been a busy year of pen buying for me: from buying my "dream pen" (an Omas Paragon in "Arco" brown celluloid) to some new Libelle, Laban, Levenger, Delta, and Taccia pens, two or three Namiki and Sailor maki-e pens, as well as a couple of Namiki VP's to join the VP Raden I already owned. I'm going to have to pace myself before my girlfriend strangles me! :headsmack: I think it may be time to sell some of my vintage collection and "extras" to help subsidize the future!

I just got back from the 2009 Atlanta Pen Show (my first show in awhile) where I saw some of the new models as well as some very special vintage ones - including an early ivory scrimshaw Sailor eyedropper on Gerald's table that was amazing. My interactions with people at that show including the new manufacturers, the folks turning pens on lathes in their home workshops, and this thread in the FPN remind me why the pen community is so special. I hope to meet each of the members of the Dani Trio "Fellowship" in the near future. Best regards and inky-fingered handshakes to all of you --Chris

Kevin,

That is one exquisite pen! I was wondering will this pen be a preorder situation to give you an idea on how many parties are interested or is it just the first 50 and that's it?

Justin

It was great meeting members of the Pen Posse today at Nihonmachi! Thanks for setting it up Lisa, you are a Pen Posse head honcho for sure :-)

At the meet today I unveil the prototype in raw ebonite which will be used as the pen base for our LE. It is a flat top octagon an offspring of Genkai and octagon!!

Once upon a time Mr. Genkai went on a date... meet Mr. Genkai

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4151.jpg

He met Ms. Octagon and quickly fell in love... meet Miss Octagon

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4152.jpg

They soon got married... wedding picture

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4153.jpg

...and went on their honeymoon.... To keep it PG-13

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4154.jpg

9 months later... little octagon is born

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4155.jpg

Ahh... a faimily portrait...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4156.jpg

The pen is actually not that much shorter than the full size octagon, maybe half inch shorter when uncapped. The pen shape reminds me of a "tanto"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/winedoc/Sales2/IMG_4158.jpg

Also, it is confirmed... having it with deep purple undertone is not a problem, just take a little longer! OK, I am pooped from having too much fun at the meet. More later :-)

Kevin

Hi Justin,

Danitrio has agree to have their artist do a couple of prototypes and we'll see what he can come up with. I have asked them... ok, more like begged them to keep this pen under $900 delivered to you. I want the pen to be affordable, but not sacrafice on quality, and I think they understand my point and support this whole heartly. A preliminary head count is appreciated, but I understand without a firm price, this is difficult. The list stands close to 60 folks at this time, but I figure some would not want the pen for variety of reasons, so 50 pens should be enough?

Best,

Kevin

You gave the right definition... A smaller Genkai with Mrs. Octagon genetics... It is a very nice combination and must look awesome when dressed as intended. Something keeps telling me that I'm going to use it as an eyedropper...

I am going to try and save for this pen, but I cannot make an absolute "yes, give me one" vote at this time. Kevin, it is a beauty and I hope I will be able to afford it when the time comes.
