Writing Speed And Paper Texture: Will It Change My Habit?
proton007 posted a topic in Handwriting & Handwriting Improvement
I've noticed that it is nearly impossible to write slowly on paper that has even a tiny bit of texture. As in, the resistance created by the 'peaks' and 'valleys' on the paper surface can only be overcome if one writes at a particular speed. Only then the curves are smooth, and the handwriting flowing. Does that mean my handwriting will be 'bound' to the type of paper I use for practice? A smoother texture would mean more slippage, while a rougher texture would be even worse. Is there a 'control' in this experiment I can use? Nib? Flow? Something that helps me adjust as I encounter variation in paper quality? This has become a point of distress. -
Improving Handwriting Speed, For High School Students
NinjaWriter posted a topic in Handwriting & Handwriting Improvement
Hello! I am a student in year 10. My senior years are coming up, and I have had a huge problem with my handwriting speed. So basically, I was researching around for handwriting speed tips or how to write faster or ANYTHING that could help me improve at all and I found that people like Nonsensical can write 'the quick brown fox jumped swiftly over the lazy dog' in 10 - 12 seconds, with very neat and legible writing . All I can write at the moment is at max 24 - 27 words per minute under exam conditions. But to be honest, its not good enough at all. My handwriting is legible, and I've been holding the pen correctly since primary school but I simply cannot write fast enough to finish my exam papers or take down notes in class. We don't use fountain pens in school, only ballpoint pens and that is what I want to stick to at the moment, but I wanted to hit 40 -50 words. When I try to write as fast as I can for 1 minute periods, I can hit 30 words but then my wrist gets all cramped up when I try to maintain it. I think my writing motion may be incorrect as well. Does anyone have any tips, handwriting suggestions or links to other places where I can improve? I'm not really interested in adapting any shorthand techniques or dropping the 'e' while writing because I need to be able to write in English exams with my writing and I can't be accidentally leaving out an 'e' here and there or writing in a language that my teachers cannot understand. I do have till the end of the year to try practice and improve before it will start heavily impacting my grades. And one more thing, I don't mind writing in cursive or print, I'm happy to learn any as long as they will be effective and fast in exams Please help! Thank you- 23 replies

Slashdot covered a story with the rather histrionic title: "Finland Dumps Handwriting In Favor of Typing". It turns out that was partially based on a mis-translation. The schools are merely going to drop cursive as a mandatory requirement and instead focus on printing and typing, which is a shame but IMO not too surprising these days. However, somebody in the comments section posted this: Challenge accepted! I pulled out a book and found a long paragraph to transcribe, first in cursive with a fountain pen, then printing with a mechanical pencil. My results: 7 minutes 53 seconds with the pen, 9 minutes 20 seconds with the pencil. That works out to a 15% speed advantage for cursive. It's not a huge, dramatic difference, but it's significant. Also, writing with the fountain pen was much less tiring to my hand, and it came out looking neater and easier to read (although I think both were perfectly legible). So... Maybe this guy just had really bad cursive handwriting? Maybe it depends heavily on what you're used to and well-practiced with? Maybe it just naturally varies from person to person?

Hello, I am handwriting lover, in school, in college etc I always focused on my handwriting, I used to be obsessed that much with my handwriting that I used to change my handwriting daily in the school but after a long journey of this I finally made my hand legible enough to get a better grip on paper, so I have uploaded a sample of my handwriting here, my question is that 1) tell me that what type of handwriting is this? 2) Is this handwriting suitable for exams? 3) Is it legible and easy to read? 4) Is my handwriting beautiful good looking or bad looking? 5:) Should I continue to write like this? and please also rate my handwriting out of 10. Thanks.
