LMS Coronation class locomotive 6229 ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ - de-streamlined.jpeg
Mercian posted a gallery image in FPN Image Albums
From the album: Mercian’s Miscellany
This photo, which I have taken from the Wikipedia page about this class of steam locomotive… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMS_Coronation_Class …shows LMS ‘Coronation’ class locomotive no. 6229 ‘Duchess of Hamilton’, after its streamlined casing was removed. The Marketing department at LMS wanted a new class of streamlined locomotive, to compete with the new streamlined locomotives being operated by LNER. The LMS Chief Mechanical Engineer - William Stanier - was not keen on the idea, because the benefits of the streamlining were only apparent at very high speed, and not huge, but the streamlined casing meant that maintenance times (and also costs) were increased. Eventually he decided to have all the streamlining casings removed, and further locomotives built after the initial batch were built without it.
