I have a taper-less John Holland #2 nib in its ferrule. You can see there are remnants of the mother of pearl taper still inside the back end where, I assume, it snapped off. (Probably wasn’t difficult to do….these things are so tiny!) Does anyone know if the MOP tapers were glued into the ferrule? I haven’t attempted to pry it out just yet, but I would like to replace the taper if possible. I don’t know how to affix it, though….what kind of adhesive (if any) would they have used back then? Thanks for any help you can give!

New Purchases - John Holland, Diamond P.p. & Gold Medal
RogerRamjet posted a topic in Fountain & Dip Pens - First Stop
A local B&M shop pretty much buys and sells anything and I deal regularly with them. Had an estate with some fountain pens and he gave me a call. I bought the lot of pens and here are the better pens. I got a decent deal and all are new makers for my collection. Enjoy (I am ) In order: John Holland flat top (Jewel John Holland nib), John Holland "rounded" top (Jewel John Holland nib), Diamond P.P. (Warranted #8 nib), & a National Gold Medal his and hers pens.- 1 reply

Mr. Minuskin has been busy with his laser, and made my John Holland nib whole again. I'm AMAZED! Here's pictures:

If Dan Smith says it can't be fixed, I'd take him at his word. My superflexy John Holland nib had too damn many cracks to be saved. That's a total drag, but it also raises a question: what makes a nib crack? I'd imagine that each company had its own alloy, and maybe some are less stable than others. Or is it the design of the nib? Conklin Crescent nibs tend to crack across the ends of their distinctive breather holes, but others split lengthwise. Has anyone had a think about this?
