  1. Sorry if this is in the wrong section, please move if it is, thank you! Are there any German users here who have ordered pens from Japan? I am thinking about ordering a Pilot pen on German eBay, but by a Japanese seller. It is so much cheaper than here, but of course taxes and customs ("Zollgebühren") have to be added (the seller says it is not included in price). Do you know how much I have to add for custom, taxes, Einfuhrsteuer, shipping company handling fees? I could not find "Füllfederhalter" (fountain pen) on the German customs catalog. The pen will be about 230-240 EUR with free shipping from Japan. I want to figure out if it is cheaper after all with all those extra costs (and the hassle driving to the customs office, filling out all these forms etc.) Thank you for sharing your experiences!

  4. Hello everyone I have this pen that was gifted to me in a box set. Iit has no markings other than “Iridium” and “Germany” on the nib. I know its a long shot but does anyone have any insight to posibbly the make and what converter would fit it? It should just be a standard International if im not mistaken right? Thank you in advance for any and all info!
  5. Hello to everyone. I found three really similiar looking fountain pens at my love's flat. I wonder what brand they could be or how old they must be, what their engraved subtitles refer to and so on. I took photos and luckily I can read small letters from close, so I can write what I found engraved on their tips. I will describe them according to their order on both photos, they are in the same order on both. On the left, no pattern: has a "Spirit of St Louis" graving at the bottom edge of the lid. On the point "Iridium point" and Germany are engraved with some nice spiral-decorated "frame" like pattern. It seems to be made of steel or some other lighter metal. Middle one, "stripy": on the tip it says "Radiant tipped" and "Made in USA". It has a very light, plastic feeling, especially the lid. The other two have more metal weight and feeling. On the right, with black shapes: on the tip it says "Matador", below that is an encircled "1" and below that is New York. The lid and body are made of metal. Thank you in advance Update: Found one more, it was in a Marksman titled case, but I'm not sure if it is one. It says "Iridium point" on the tip as well with the same nice swirls, but no "Germany" is engraved. It must have been a company gift, since there is a Philips logo on its lid. There is a very little figure on the golden clip which looks like a winged human figure standing on one leg and holding a stretch-out bow. Naturally the last photos with the dark blue pen count here.

  7. Pros- Beautiful Finish Perfectly Balanced Amazing Nib (both steel & gold nibs are amazing). Snap Cap Very Solid Pen, Almost Indestructible Comfortable grith Great Packing Cons- Price is very higher for steel nib variant , you will get too many gold nibs in this price segment. Clip is tight. Diplomat don’t has good Customer Service, incase your pen turns out to be faulty. It’s a Heavy Pen, And people with small hands won’t like this pen. Some things you need to know – Body Material – Lacquered Metal Cap Type- Snap Cap Filling Mechanism- Cartridge, Converter Grip Material- Resin Nib Size – Extra Fine, Fine, Medium Postable – Yes Trim – Silver Diameter Body – 13.1mm (0.52in) Diameter Cap – 14.4mm (0.57in) Grip Diameter- 10.2mm (0.40in) Length (Body) -128.5mm (5.06in) Length (Cap) – 62.9mm (2.48in) Length(Nib) – 22.4mm (0.88in) Length Overall – 138.5mm (5.45in) Weight (body) – 28.0g (0.99oz) Weight (cap) – 18.0g (0.63oz) Weight Overall – 46.0g (1.62oz) Capacity of convertor- 1.17 ml Other Aspects – Packing- Great! you will like the presentation. It contains pen resting on Diplomat Satin Pillow, converter, cartridge & service guide. Design – The pen is perfectly balanced, with a very simple minimalistic branding. It’s aesthetically pleasing. There is a small stepdown from the body to the grip section. You won’t have any issue with grip section. It is not smooth & even people with large hands will love this. Nib Performance- It has amazing steel nib, one of the best steel nibs I have ever used (my favorite still is OPUS 88 nib). It is very smooth & on par with many gold nibs. It also comes with gold nib , you have to pay extra $130 for it. I have it too, it is equally nice. It writes very well too. But price goes too high with gold nib, their are many amazing pens available in that category. For anyone looking for heavy pen with a good nib, I will recommend it. Note – I have three of these, one with steel nib & other with gold nib. Two were purchased by me from Goulet Pens & third one from a local store. 9. So, our friends from SEITZ-KREUZNACH have release a few new colors: Lime GreenIndian SummerCognacCinnamon Brown Actually, there is a fluorescent yellow, but since I am not interested in highlighter inks, I didn't bother with that. They have also release a new bottle size the extremely cute 30ml ... similar to the Kaweco bottles Lets start with some pics... On Red n'Black Paper on Rhodia on Tomoe River My thoughts: I like them all. Lime Green: Very similar to Caran D'Ache Delicate Green. Les saturated than Robert Oster Lime Green. Wet flow, no show through or bleed through.Indian Summer: Goes down very bright, dries with a reddish tone... Kind of Terracota. Wet flow, no show through or bleed through.Cognac: This is my color. I do like these kind of hues. This one is very direct, no green undertones or gold... just a nice light brown. Wet flow, no show through or bleed through.Cinnamon Brown: Another favorite one, I do like my browns. No red undertones, it looks richer than Cognac. Wet flow, no show through or bleed through.I did not see much shading, but in honestly my pen is a wet flex nib. Maybe in a drier nib. (Correction: I was expecting much more shading.. Cognac and Cinnamon are my favorite. I did not see sheen, not even on Tomoe) Hope you enjoy the pics.. C.
  10. Recently I got this Gold filled FP. Which is small but has solid build. when posted it can be on the heavier side. It is a smooth writer. Filling type is piston. It has a single camel logo on cap and in the nib. Nib has the markings 14CT and Germany. Cap has the marking: Staedtler 14CT Gold Filled Germany. Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you
  11. The next set of pens in this series come from Tombow and Rotring. They are what seems to be an early Tombow Zoom 101 and a non-telescoping Rotring Espirit. The Epirit predates the absorption of Rotring by Sanford. Both pens are no longer in production. I purchased the Espirit in 2009 and the Zoom 101 in 2007. https://imgchr.com/i/1jszYd">src="https://s2.ax1x.com/2020/02/14/1jszYd.md.jpg" alt="1jszYd.jpg" border="0" /> The pens share little in external appearance although both are thin compared to many pens on the market. The Rotring is made from anodized aluminum and consistent with the companies sleek functional aesthetic. The Tombow is made from what appears to be painted brass with a plastic grip section in the center of the barrel. The clips on both pens are steel. The Rotring cap is pulled off while the Tombow screws off. The Tombow is unusual in that one can change the cartridge without removing the cap while the Rotring has conventional access to the cartridges. The grip on the Tombow is high on the barrel which seems odd at first, but is nice in the hand. The machined ridges on the Rotring also make it sit nicely in the hand. https://imgchr.com/i/1jy29A">src="https://s2.ax1x.com/2020/02/14/1jy29A.jpg" alt="1jy29A.jpg" border="0" /> https://imgchr.com/i/1j6Vu6">src="https://s2.ax1x.com/2020/02/14/1j6Vu6.md.jpg" alt="1j6Vu6.jpg" border="0" /> https://imgchr.com/i/1j6pEF">src="https://s2.ax1x.com/2020/02/14/1j6pEF.md.jpg" alt="1j6pEF.jpg" border="0" /> https://imgchr.com/i/1vVH8P">src="https://s2.ax1x.com/2020/02/14/1vVH8P.md.jpg" alt="1vVH8P.jpg" border="0" /> One can see that asides from the decoration on the nibs, they are identical. In speculating about where the nibs come from, I think that Rotring made the nibs for Tombow or they get the nibs from the same third party OEM. I lean towards the nib being made by Rotring as it features on many of the company’s pens of this period. Tombow also was linked to the Herlitz nibs I examined in the first post in this series, so I doubt Tombow made the nibs for Rotring. Tombow has a history as supplier of a portfolio of stationary supplies, so fountain pens were just another item to complete the product list. Rotring was a more focused niche player and fountain pens played a larger role in the product range. I hope you enjoyed the article and I look forward to your comments. If you know more about this style of nib, please share your knowledge. Thanks for reading.
  12. This is the first of what will hopefully be a series of posts that start looking at the similarities between nibs of various brands, especially lesser known, lower end manufacturers. The idea is to see if we can figure out relationships between factories beyond the Jowo, Schmidt, and Bock arrangements we know of. I don’t have any authoritative knowledge, just a collection that spans the lower end of the market and attempts to collect pens from different countries. I hope others will join in and add to the posts to create a more complete picture of the relationships between different companies now and in the past. It is not an attempt to make sense of IPG (Iridium Point Germany), Parker 51 clones, or Lamy Safari/All star clones. Sorting those nibs requires direct knowledge from someone working in the industry or someone with metallurgic testing skills. I will focus on the nibs, but will try and look at overall pens when I think the designs share a lot of traits or are interchangeable. The first pens featured are the Herlitz Tornado SLS ( 1988?), the Tombow Object (2008?), the Jolly Jollypen, and the Staedtler Learner’s Pen. The companies all currently produce fountain pens, although the Tornado and Object are not current models. Herlitz and Staedtler are German, Tombow is Japanese, and Jolly is Austrian. All but the Object are German student pens. The nibs and pens share characteristics that I hope to show you that the nibs are from the same company or made from the same tooling. The feeds differ between the current production pens and the older ones, so someone has updated the design a bit. The first photo shows the pens together and you have from top to bottom; the Herlitz Tornado SLS, the Tombow Object, the Jolly Jollypen, and the Staedtler Learner’s Pen. The Tornado and Jollypen follow the typical adolescent German Student Pen design of a metal cap, sturdy clip and plastic body, The Tornado is more of an adult pen with an anodized, brushed aluminum, torpedo design. The Staedtler reflects the current elementary-aged Student Pen aesthetic of “rugged kid proof plastic bludgeon” The nibs are shown below and all have a continuous curved design with no breather hole. They are well-behaved, lay down a smooth line and shade inks relatively easily. They are all forgiving nibs as one expects from student pens and ink leaks are rare. When ink leaks, a few drops is what you get. The Tornado and Object share the same design for nib and feed with little visible differences beyond the color of the nib and sprue burrs. As far as I can tell, this nib started use in the Herlitz Bugatti which dates from the 1960’s (?). Hopefully someone who has a Bugatti can chime in? The Jollypen and Learner’s pen share the same nib and feed. The nibs differ just in engraving, while the feeds are identical. The nibs are shown below. Based on the history with the Bugatti, I think that Herlitz first made the nibs and tooling and either makes the nibs for Jolly and Staedtler or provides the tooling. I haven’t seen this nib in any form from Jowo, Schmidt, or Bock, however that doesn’t rule out that one of these companies makes the nibs shown in this post. Hopefully someone who knows more can shed more light. Tombow is interesting as it will appear in my next post as a company that shares a nib with a pre-Sanford Rotring pen. Because Tombow’s nibs match those used by other companies, I doubt they make this nib in house. Jolly is a newer company than Herlitz, so I don’t think it makes the nibs. The similarities between the Jollypen and Tornado are striking as they seem to share the same tooling for the barrels and caps, or are similar enough to be interchangeable. The Tornado is an SLS version that was made with an ink eraser at the end. The eraser didn’t work as well as the traditional two-ended ones like the Pelikan Pirat. I hope you enjoyed this post and please add your knowledge and look through your pens and see if anything looks like these pens. Postscript: Jolly is a lesser known company, whose pens are great if you want nice student pens off the beaten track. I have another earlier production Jollypen as well. Here is a link to their site. https://jolly.at/en/produkt-kategorie/cartridge-pens/

  14. With International Fountain Pen Day around the corner, I've decided it's high time there is a pen group here in Berlin. I've searched the forum here on FPN with out finding anything. I haven't searched the German forums. If there are German-speaking clubs that meet regularly that I'm unaware of, I'm obviously grateful for any pointers. But being English, I would love to meet others living in, or visiting Berlin that don't speak only German. It would be good if language wasn't limited too much. So, who's interested in getting together on Friday 6th November to share pens, inks, stories, advice and just general relaxed chit-chat? I've not got an exact location in mind just yet, it will depend a little on how many are interested. Location suggestions are as welcome as interest in meeting.

  18. A while back I bought a pretty German button filler for a song and by now I restored it completely. Material seems to be a "red and pearl swirl" celluloid well-known in the 1930s. The imprint reads JUWEL Carl Klipperl Frankfurt a/M I could not find any info on this pen. But there was an early German manufacturer, first called Anglo-Amer and later International from the 1920s on which produced a pen with a model name "Juwel". That's the closest I can get. The construction points to the 1930s. Button fillers were rather uncommon in Germany after the piston filler was introduced in 1929. Colourful celluloid was mostly produced for export during that time. The feed is very plain without fins and rather thin. The imprint on the nib reads "WARRANTED / 14car / 1ST Quality" also common in the 1930s for imported nibs from England or the US. Does anyone here know something about it? Any info is highly appreciated.
  19. Hi everyone. Can anyone recommend " physical stores " in/around Dusseldorf/Germany where we can find and buy Diamine German Exclusive inks these days in a very short visit/stop there? Many thanks in advance.

  22. A surprise! A review of a ballpoint Review Linked Here too Rotring started in 1928 with a tubular tipped stylographic fountain pen commonly known as Tiku and was incorporated as Titenkuli Handels GmbH. Later in the 1984, the calligraphic ArtPen was introduced, which was followed by the more famous and most sought after 600 series pens. There were a few changes in name in between and you can find their historical timeline here. In 1998, it was taken over by Sanford US, a part of Newell Rubbermaid Inc which also owns brands like Parker and Waterman. Rotring stopped manufacturing fountain pens soon after this acquisition. And yes of course, rot ring literally translates into red ring, which can be seen in almost all its writing instruments. The Rapid PRO looks more like a modern avatar of the iconic 600 ball points. With evolution rotring has perhaps tried to make the rigid hexagonal shape more giving to curvature in the rapid pro. While writing this review, I could find a Japanese ebay seller list a few rotring 600 ball points. I am fairly certain that these are fresh production and not NOS. The RAPID pro comes packaged in a grey-coloured triangular cardboard box with brand and product descriptions. The country of manufacturing is mentioned as Japan. I found the box, quite a welcome change compared to the earlier one. You may see a deserted G2 refill, lying beside the box. Nothing wrong with the original refill itself, this can be completely attributed to my new found love with Monteverde ceramic gel refills. Both the Silver Chrome and Matte Black designs are beautifully made designs. The silver one portrays a shimmering exuberance, while the black one is quite subtle, albeit manifesting the same power. The weight and feel of both pens is quite comfortable, balanced and not at all on the heavier side. Don’t let the technical specs fool you! Both finishes have a smooth audible click of the plunger button, to expose the writing tip, through the cone-cylinder tip. I couldn’t find a decipherable difference between the knock between the two variants. I use black and silver alternately. The black one exhibits subtlety and seems to be quite capable of hiding in dark surroundings. Even the indented rOtring logo on the friction fit clip appears to be quite understated yet firm. The silver version in contrast looks vivacious. The mirror finished clip shimmers along with the conical tip, while the grey shine of the barrel complements both ends. The iconic red ring adorns both the pens well, in between the section and the barrel. You can feel a noticeable difference between knurling of both sections. It feels a tad sharper on the silver variant. Even the branding on the black variant is understated yet suave while the silver one carries the brand with quite a panache. I feel the concentric cones & cylinder at the tip add to the style and render firmness in character to both pens. A plastic insert serves the threading between the barrel and section, which can be a bit of trauma to the classical pen fanatic, for an otherwise near-perfectly made pen. The inserts seem quite thick and hopefully should be able to sustain added pressure of the metal parts if one over tightens the barrel. The clip rounds back at the barrel with clasps from both sides, leaving a small gap in-between. Both the posers together. Some measurements for your reference: Length: 14.9 cm Diameter: 0.9 cm Weight: 52.5 g The weight of the pen along with the knurled grip, make the rapid pros a pleasure to write with. And with the monteverde ceramic gel refills, the rapid pros deliver pro performance. Hope you enjoy the review of a ballpoint from a fellow fpner

    Online Academy - Pink Flash!

Quite a few German pen companies seem to tailor a portion of their line for students, starting with primary and all the way up to university. The German pen company, ONLINE, is one of them, and they offer quite a range of economical fountain pens for youngsters and adults alike. The company is fairly new - established in 1991 - and currently offers two major lines: Young.Line, and Top.Line. The Young.Line is mainly purposed for students, with trendy styles and durability in mind. They also offer things like erasers, pen cases, and other pen paraphernalia. Since they are a newcomer to the German pen industry where many major players have been waging marketing wars for a century, they seem to have focused on everyday-usable pens. For European customers, the Online pens are available - guess what - online, and probably in retailers if you are in Germany. If you are in the US, their products are available from Paradise Pen, but ONLY the Academy Flash line. ______________________________________________________________________ Appearance & Design (1-10) - A modern spin on Lamy Safari? The pen is not flashy in design, despite its name. Germans seem to have some preference for big, silver clips, and this one is no exception, with a big, "look at me" kind of a silver clip attached to the cap from a black top. I purchased the pink model, but they are also available in black, orange, red, white, and yellow. They also have the "same design but different metalwork" kind of a model, called Viva Colori, which are available in black, purple, lilac, blue, green, and yellow. In this version, all the black parts are replaced by stainless-steel-looking equivalents. The logo of the company and the country of origin are engraved on the cap's black portion, right above where the clip is attached, and also on the nib. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0278_zps67dc39b5.jpg There is something a little odd going on with the cap, and where the cap end generally meets if you cap the pen or post it. For some reason, the cap end is cut into a wave, with the back of the end cut slightly lower than the front. This dictates the orientation of the cap - it doesn't allow rotation without getting the cap loose - which was something new for me. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0279_zpse62d3b95.jpg It does, however, allow seamless attachment. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0276_zps9fc4b6f6.jpg 9/10 Construction & Quality (1-10) - It seems to handle some beating well. It's clearly a student pen, so it's designed to handle a 10 year old running around with a rock inside the bag next to the pen. I haven't tried to scratch it or drop OED on it, so I'm not sure just how much pressure or momentum this thing can suffer, but the construction is quite sturdy. The nib is made of iridium, and it doesn't allow much flexing. The clip won't be coming off any time soon. A bit of rough-handling won't mar this pen. The grip is an ergonomic grip, and has a rubbery texture. It feels comfortable, but has the same scheme as Lamy Safari's "thou shalt place thy finger here in this manner" kind of a "wedge". For those who abhor that Lamy grip, this won't be your new best friend. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0283_zps52ef1e31.jpg http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0286_zps22818f94.jpg 9/10 Weight & Dimensions (1-10) - German pens seem to have a standard. Weight: 41g Length: 141mm x 17mm x 12mm, 169mm long posted Upon comparison, the length is almost identical (capped, at least) to Lamy Safari. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0275_zpsc8f006a4.jpg It fits my hand well, and it's not too thin nor too thick. The cap is light, so it doesn't make the pen head-heavy when I post it. 10/10 Nib & Performance (1-10) - Slippery when wet? The nib is only available in M if you are in the US. If you are buying directly from ONLINE, you can also purchase in EF; there are also nib/grip portions available separately as L (for lefties) and ballpoint. http://www.online-pen.de/shop/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/G/r/Griffstuecke_Academy.jpg_14.jpg The nib itself allows very little flexing, and the tip is rounded. This, for some reason, returned almost NO feedback; it isn't the smoothness of slicing into cheese with a very sharp knife, which is what a Japanese pen feels like, but rather slipping on oil that someone spilt on a tile floor. As I'm not used to that kind of slippery nib, it took me by surprise. The nib is not the angular shape Lamy Safari and Platinum Preppy sport, but the standard shape. It has the engraving "ONLINE Germany" on it. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0277_zps64cf4f34.jpg Or it might be the ink. I filled it with Noodler's Shah's Rose. 7/10 Filling System & Maintenance (1-10) - Cartridge system, will take international converters The filling system is your regular international cartridge, and accepts long international converters. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0280_zpscc0238e2.jpg It came with a blue cartridge, and an inexplicable object that is shaped like a cartridge, but is empty, and has no bottom. The part where the nipple goes into the feed is a slightly transparent plastic, and the plastic itself is almost black, so I don't think I'll notice if there was any staining anyway. http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w614/GabrielleduVent/DSC_0281_zpsdac58611.jpg 10/10 Cost & Value (1-10) - It's priced appropriately for a student pen. The price in the US is $18.95, plus local tax. If you buy it direct from the website, it is 10,99 plus 19% tax (that's roughly $15, tax not included). It's not going to break your bank, and it serves as a pen, and it probably handles rough handling. Including tax (which came out to be 13,08 euros), the US equivalent would be about $18. So either way, it's very appropriately priced. The exchangeable nibs are 3,99 per grip/nib, plus 19% tax. 10/10 Conclusion - It's a good pen for students, and those who want a pen that they don't have to fuss about. While this pen would not be replacing my most often-used pen, it's definitely going to be kept in rotation. My only gripe was the lack of nib varieties, but I generally don't use italic so I have no problem with that. It'd look odd on an executive desk, but for students, writers, and those who are looking utility rather than design/prestige, this would be a good pen to buy. TOTAL: 9.16/10 (Grip image courtesy of ONLINE Schreibgeräte.)
