First Impressions (9/10)

Definitely has that look of a Parker 65 or a MontBlanc 22 from the same era. Gold and black - proper pen colours, none of that namby pamby coloured swirly stuff here.

Appearance & Design (8/10)

Good solid conservative look; a bank manager from Munich would use this rather than an overblown Meisterstück or a frankly subversive Lamy.

Weight & Dimensions (9/10)

Pretty much perfect; nice with or without the cap posted, even the plastic feels comfortable with no funny knobbly bits to catch your fingers on.

Nib & Performance (9/10)

A solid-performing 18K nib, with a small amount of flex. Lays down a nice even line.

Filling System (7/10)

This one's cartridge or converter; there is a piston filler version as well

Cost & Value (9/10)

Bought for £25; you couldn't buy anything new that looked as good, and I think it looks nicer than a Parker 65.

Conclusion (9)

A really nice underrated pen - stop looking for those green stripey models - black/gold is the new binde!!

Very nice and great price! On a side not your avatar is one of my most favorite actors ever! I had the great honour and pleasure of meeting him at his home in Majorca once.

All the best.

Reminds me of the middle verse of the German national anthem, Das Deutschlandlied aka Deutschland uber alles:

"Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,

Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang

Sollen in der Welt behalten

Ihren alten schönen Klang,

Uns zu edler Tat begeistern

Unser ganzes Leben lang.

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,

Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang"

- which, loosely, translates to "(German) Wine, women and song will inspire us our whole life long" -

Those old Krauts had their priorities straight! Yeah.... :happyberet:

They just forgot to mention Pelikan pens. :headsmack:

Nice review of the Pelikan 30, I think I am going to keep an eye out for one.

Ha! That's the reason I married a girl from Munich :notworthy1: who didn't recognise her own national anthem

Funnily though in all my 12 years of knowing her and up to six trips a year when we were living apart, I only had two Pelikans until I joined FPN a couple of months ago.

A very nice review of a pen I'd never heard of before. I like the looks of it--very understated, no-nonsense, like good Coca-Cola Company middle management. Sort of like a Pelikan Parker 51. If I ever saw one of these at a good price, I'd buy it. Very nice pen and a very good review of it.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have the same pen , the M30 which is the piston version.

I have the M20 silvexa as well which is essentially the same pen just that the cap is silver instead of rolled gold.

Both my pens the nib is more hidden/hooded as compared to yours.

If you refer to Reuttinger's website http://www.ruettinger-web.de/e-pelikan-modell-p1.html

the M20 and m30 series all come with a 14k nib and not 18k.

So yours may be an upgraded pen (18k is better than 14k)
