The Deccan Masterpiece

Hi friends…

The pen under discussion was a chance find at the Deccan Pen Stores, Secunderabad … it is called the Deccan Masterpiece … this is a variant of the Deccan Masterpiece reviewed by Hari in the Photography forum … everything else is more or less the same, except for the styling… and here I think the Deccan people have tried to style this Masterpiece on the lines of ‘The Masterpiece’ that we all know about… you have the twin gold coloured bands on the cap, the clip is golden in colour with a ball at the end and on top of everything (literally!) is a round white circle, reminding you of something similar of a different shape … Hari’s version had a round green circle on top of the cap…

The nib is the king in this pen…honestly…I hadn’t seen such a ‘big’ nib before… when I was shown the Masterpiece for the first time, I refused to buy it saying that the nib looked like a knife blade… and even when I reserved one for Hari and when we went to buy that one, I was once again not enthused enough…the nib again! And just as it happens with pen addicts…I decided to buy it only to complete the Deccan brushed ebonite collection… and when I asked for the Masterpiece… I was kind of surprised to see a different pen being offered to me…I liked the design, of course… I opened the cap and there it was…the ‘bruiser’ nib… and so, I bought the Masterpiece … I got it filled with black ink… and it lays down a slightly more than fine not-so-wet line… and as with Deccan Advocates, the Masterpiece also has no starting problems… and I picked up the Masterpiece after 10 days today and it started writing from the first stroke onwards… This is the best thing that I like about Advocates and now the Masterpiece…

Now, for some details…

Material: Ebonite; Brushed surface with polished barrel end and cap top; polished also at cap lip and barrel lip; the section looks like it is ebonite; and the nib and feed are fitted perfectly – no movements at all; the pen is slightly shorter, but much thicker than the Maxi that I reviewed under the ‘brushed ebonite brigade from Deccan’ caption in FP Reviews…

Screw cap – 7 turns to unscrew; two gold coloured bands on cap; golden coloured clip with a ball at the end, and the clip gives a satisfying click when clipped to and unclipped from my shirt pocket…; the cap has the distinctive calligraphic 'D' engraved on it...

Nib is as Hari mentioned Size 40 steel…length capped slightly more than 6 inches; uncapped 5 ¾ inches; posted 7 ½ inches…

Hey, I can't wait now for my Masterpiece, GT shall we call it? Nice photographs, you have captured the brushed finish very well. I also liked the Swarna, I have not seen this one, I think it deserves a post of its own.

The CT Masterpiece that I have has a longer polished barrel end. I think these smaller details depend upon the pen turner's whim which is a good thing IMHO.

The Deccan Maxi is actually called the "Ambassador" [umair, DPS, Abids]

Now what is the coin doing in the photos?

Regards,

Hari

Very nice photos and very informative description ......

This pen reminds me so much of the Danitrio Raw Ebonite Models (Densho , Mikado and Genkai , specifically in matte finish) , which are so popular in this forum that any such pen in the Marketpalce here lasts only seconds ......

It is indeed good to know that pens of such beauty and quality are made in our country too .

Dev.

Thanks Hari and Dev...

Hari...don't worry, yours will be yours soon...I think we call it the GT...I was thinking of 'Bruiser' (remember, remember that other FP) for the model...

I too thought that the Swarna Humungous deserved a post separately... will do so shortly... I think I will go over to the Brushed Deccan Ebonite post of mine and add these actual name details...all those names are given be me... and what is the coin doing there? is there something underneath the coin?

Dev...thanks for your comments...I know, Hari told me about Indian ebonites in the marketplace...wish I could be so resourceful...it is a good looking Indian pen, isnt it?

Shrujaya

Great photographs -- that pen looks like it would be a pleasure to hold in one's hand.

Are there any online sellers for these pens? I feel my fingers twitching ... I bought a couple of Ratnams (Supreme and 302)last year and love them for their size and feel, and this is bigger than the Supreme ...

Cheers,

Effrafax.

Hi Jai,

A very nice pen. Great pictures. I am looking forward to get my two supreme and few Guiders sometime this month. I am looking forward to it. Hari has pointed out to me that Deccan Pens are the best Indian pens. Now, I am in the market for such pens. Thanks for sharing.

How do I go about getting one? Do they accept order over a phone and could ship to Mumbai? How much does this pen cost?

Devang.

Thank you everyone for an informative review of Indian FPs.

The last post before this one was 5 years ago..... Things must have moved on since then, surely?

What specialist vendors are there in India that now do international sales please?

(I'm in the UK, so US vendors are pricey. Andy's Pens in UK do some Wality and Varuna models.)
