Wality Problem?

Hey guys,

I think I'm having a problem with my Wality 52, but I'm not sure if its normal. I refilled it a couple days ago and then wiped the nib with a cloth. However, whenever I open the cap to write, there are ink droplets that have accumulated on the nib of the pen. I'm not sure if thats normal or something happened to it. It also seems that if I look at the nib upside down(not the way you hold it when you write) the metal is not even on both sides(its a little less flush on one side than the other). Its hard to describe, I'll try to put up a picture soon, but maybe someone has some advice...

Ketan: That happened to me when I first inked up my Wality 52 with Waterman's Havana Brown. It seems to have done that a couple of times but I do not think it has reappeared after a week's worth of usage. I inked up my Wality 69 L with some blue ink and I got a big blob on my thumb when I opened it up to write. But this morning, fine. Use it a week and see what happens and keep a cloth or paper tissue nearby.

My Wality 69L consistently has ink on the nib when I uncap it. Sometimes it deposits a blob on the page when I start to write. However, I also have this problem with another modern, inexpensive ED filler and wonder if I just don't fill the pens enough or if I fill them too much. My Waterman 12 ED doesn't do this, but then it's had almost a century to get over any bad habits! :bunny1: :bunny1:

The nib appearing offset may be just that - the nib and feed may not be aligned just right. It's not hard to fix - most of the time you can shift the nib on the feed by applying pressure gently while gripping the nib with a soft cloth. Others might give a better and more correct way of making this adjustment.

My new Wality 51 (looks like the 52) is having a similar problem. When I hold the pen with the nib down (as if writing), ink starts to bulge out the sides of the nib. As soon as I tilt the pen horizontal or nib-to-the-ceiling the blob pours back into the pen. So far the cap hasn't filled with ink, but I think it's safe to say that I shouldn't use the pen like this or else I will soon get an ink spill. My Wality 77C never misbehaves, but I've heard of a lot of people having trouble with the 51/52 and 69's... I can't tell if the nib and feed are not aligned properly. It all looks okay to me.

I really want to like this pen, as it seems to be writing reliably, finely, dryly, and to boot it holds a lot of ink, and is inexpensive. I'm thinking that they might be good pens to give out to friends, but not if this leaky problem is common (elsewhere there is a post from Johan saying that this happened to him TWICE in a row!)

My wailty 69, it is a blue pen, leaked today after flushing with water and inking up some Herbin Sapphire. Sam

  • 3 weeks later...

I had a similar problem but got a replacement sent.

The advice I was given was to push the nib + feed back into the section as it may have come loose.

This is the only problem to an otherwhise brilliant pen for the price...I hope some sort of solution is thought of or quality control is increased.

Walitys use a friction fit feed and nib. They simply push into the section and are held there by friction. It is possible that over time, they could loosen up and move forward enough to leak. It is also possible that flow issues are due to the feed not pressing up to the nib well enough. This is an easy fix. Just run your tap water until it is hot to the touch, run the feed under it to soften and press it against the nib. Then while holding the pen in that position, switch the tap to cold water and run the nib / feed under it to "set" the new relationship.

If you are feeling particularly adventurous, beeswax or paraffin was can be melted and dripped in along the feed/section interface to prevent leakage.

I highly recommend getting Da Book for easy fountain pen fixes. Walitys are great pens at great prices, but have some idiosyncracies similar to vintage fountain pens. While India has certainly modernized, these Wality pens are a throwback to the old days.
