My First Pen of 2005

Today I received my fist fountain pen of 2005. For some reason, I like the first one to be really significant, you know, to set the tone for the rest of the year.

A very nice BCHR Esterbrook Relief 2-L with wide cap band.

A close up of the cap band engraving:

I've been collecting Relief for four years now and have never seen another wide cap band. It must have been a really significant event to warrant such a special order from the factory. CCE July 25, 1937. Wonder what that indicates. Closest I could come was the Catholic Church of England, but I don't think that's the case here.

I inked it up and it writes great!

That's very interesting. July 25, 1937 was a Sunday. Maybe you are right in your theory. I wonder what was the significance of that date.

I made an error, not Catholic Church of England, rather the Clergy of the Church of England. I never thought to look up the actual day of the date in question. Either way, interesting something was commerated on a Sunday. Maybe a retirement date or last service given? Must have been pretty significant though, 2-L's all have a skinny cap band.

Perhaps an ordination date? with the pen being a gift to the newly ordained? if you wanted to really dig into this, you might try contacting the CoE to see if they had any details in their archives...

What a handsome pen, Brian! Knowing how many unusual and rare Esterbrooks you have (I love your website, by the way), I am so happy that you found this pen!

Hope you can find out what that date means....

Thanks Maja, I'll probably be putting it on the website soon, but need to find out where and how the Relief pens should be organized, or perhaps, re-organized. :)

I might contact the CCE to see if any idea on the date can be figured out.

Glad I could share with people who can appreciate it!

Once I saw the name of the highest bidder, I said to myself, OK - you never had a chance :-) Nice pen. I got two 14K oblique renew points that are awesome. Eventually I will find a nice bargain pen to sport them on. Enjoy!....

I haven't found a Relief I've "had" to have in a while, so I thought this would be a good opportunity. :)

You talking about those x314 nibs Antoniosz? they're the same style as on the Relief obviously. Nice nibs, the M and B are some of my favorites, next to the 2284/9284 stubs.

Cool. I just picked up a 2314F, a 2314M, and a 9314F a couple of days ago (yet to arrive) and I'm really looking foward to trying them out!
