mjm

Recommended Posts

as a gift, i am getting a friend two pens- one $200+(ebonite densho or M805)and one under $100(so he wont freak if he loses it)- he has big hands

any recs for exceptional pens under $100 on the larger side? (parker 51 too small- no gold, and he likes a wet line and fine nib)

thanks a bunch for your help!

If a smooth nib is in order, you can find Sailor 1911Ms for right at about $100. As for over $200 - how much over? The options border on the limitless.

I have actually already gotten recs in another post for the more expensive pen(m805 probably)- but i have no idea about the under $100 option- although i think i definately want to avoid anything other than a gold nib- i'm thinking maybe a new old stock shaeffer legacy- but i really need other ideas

Well, the Sailor 1911M is a wet writer with a gold nib, but it is a bit smaller than a Pelikan 800. If you're looking for a great writer, this would be a very strong option.

A number come to mind

And these are street prices, not MSRP...

Waterman Carene

Sheaffer Intrigue (if you can find one around)

Parker Centenntenial International (don't laugh...I got mine for $125 on sale...)

There are a couple of the Filaco modeles that should fit the bill nicely as well...

I would second the recommendation on the Sailor 1911M. I bought one this summer, the yellow pen with a fine nib, and just love it. I find that the fine nib on this pen compares to an extra fine in a Pelikan. I also tried the pen with a medium nib, which I compare to the fine in a Pelikan or a Waterman.

I thought of the Carene as well - you can find them new between $80 and $100 if you look around. But $125 for the Parker! What a great find!

A Taccia Doric may work. Richard has new steel nib versions for $75. Here is a comparison picture; it's the big, fat blue one. The red/rust Danitrio AlphaPlus to the right of center is another possibility if you can find one at the right price.

Meets all your criteria as a writer, now its the look and feel: Pilot Vanishing Point, typically $80-100, new.

When you say "too small" do you mean the length, or the thickness? -Bruce

Except that the clip location can be a problem for some people. I'd say for a gift pen go with a standard type pen.

I am in the process of culling the herd...and I KNOW I have excess Carenes. I might be able to help out. I will make this a priority and IM you across the FPN IM client this evening with the results...

As to the Parker...

Truth be told, it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was in the Levenger Outlet Store for about 90 minutes before Peg and I were getting on a flight back to NJ. And we had JUST gotten off the Celebrity Millenium and had rented a car for the specific reason to go to the Levenger store.

A clerk wheeled in a cart with a load of pens from the "front" and there were about a half-dozen Parker Centennial Internationals...all for $125. I needed but one...and got it...in the mottled green. Sitting in my coat pocket downstairs right now...

Bill...who gets lucky once in a while...

Keeping in mind that I can only speak for the pens I own, a Taccia Imperial Portugues would be a great choice. Another is a Waterman Liaison from Oscar Braun, normally a far more expensive pen, but Sanford is discontinuing it so it is on clearance sale for $100 :D Keep in mind though that super-clearance sales can appraently sometime included tested pens that manufacturers bundle in their clearance lots.

A TWSBI Vac700 for sure.

Fountain pens are like weapons. They just make your pocket bleed so much.

Can you get a Parker 100 for under a ton?

One of those might suit if so: the design is pretty much a big, heavy P51, which is perfect for those with big hands.
