I'm curious to see how much is spent on pens by the people on this board. C'mon now, be honest.

I don't know yet; 2005 is not over and the green board is still active. :D

Ditto.

Also, are you wanting to know how much we spent in terms of gross or net? Just to be sure, let me define what I mean by gross and net.

Gross = $ spent on pens

Net = ($ spent) - ($ received for pens sold)

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Rom. 5:8, NKJV)

No, no, nobody wants to hear the gross. That would mean divorces, suicides and other unpleasent events. Let's stick to "net".

To date I have a net amount spent in 2005, equal to what I had for the seconf half of 2004. I guess I can call this progress

I have made it a habit of not buying a pen until I have sold a pen so that the majority of cost is made by the sale. That being said I bought a Pam Braun Mosaic without having sold another pen. So maybe I should have said mostly.

But then again I had a few lousy months so maybe a pen splurge wasn't so bad.

Since i'am new to this ,i have not spent very much. Maybe around $250. Since i don;t make much money, i will try to buy used pens online. Maybe ebay or here.

Sounds like you've been hanging tough, so you deserve a reward. One question - what's a Pam Braun Mosaic? Duofold Mosaic??? (Congrats on the new pen, BTW).

I like Glenn's attitude. I think that I will just let myself be ignorant of that particular dollar figure. :D

If I have the money and spending it on a pen strikes me as the best way to use it, that's exactly what I buy.

All in all, 2005 (so far) went like this:

$3.50 - a pack of Parker cartridges

$1 - Esterbrook J

$1 - Esterbrook SJ

$18.50 - Sheaffer Triumph desk set

$60 - Parker 51

$7.50 - bottle of Quink

$91.50 - total, excepting taxes and one small instance of shipping, but still under $100 if those are counted

Of course, I also spent $23 just this Monday on a Pelikan 3000 set as a Christmas gift, but I would have spent that on anything else for this person anyhow. My Parker Reflex is having some serious problems (barrel won't unscrew) so when my current cartridge goes dry I'm probably buying another pen of some sort, just because I don't have a medium nib pen otherwise.

I've probably spent $150 on inexpensive pens and given half of them away after fooling with them. One of these days I'll spend the money on a good pen and then, how knows? Maybe after finding the "perfect" pen I'll be able to kick the habit!

Till then I just keep on going and going and going....

Yes the Mosaic is a black Duofold Centennial Duofold purchased from Pam Braun at around $150. A number that you would be hard pressed to touch a standard Duofold for!

Lets see:

Waterman - Expert II, Carene

Cross - ATX, Apogee, Pinnacle (NOS)

Parker - Sonnet

Pilot - VP

Plus some inks

Hmmm, that's about £600

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have thought about it. Then again, saving up for 2006 :P

Wow this is scarry for me to think about all of the money i've spent, my entire collection began in 2005 this is the first year I've purchased fountain pens and its about 1000 dollars so far, just about filling up my first case of pens, I have about 11 pens

Do you know what's an even more fun/ scary exercise?

Go to Fountain Pen Hospital's catalog or out on the web and figure out what the MSRP value of all of your pens is!

This will only work for Moderns but it is an eyeopener ( can you believe what the manufacturers expected you to pay for them). I think I figured $8k for my little collection. :D

I also second Glenn's Attitude, I usually prefer to not think about this. If it helps, I averaged $33 per pen in 2005. :D :D

That being said, I actually sit down and try to estimate how many pens I will purchase for the coming year, but per category, not dollars. I'm three over what I expected to get, but one Esterbrook shy. :)
