Has Noodler's Baystate Blue stained any other pens?

With the recent (and now closed) thread related to NBB staining a yellow Lamy, I wondered... Has anyone else had Baystate Blue stain a pen? Perhaps an ink window, and not the finger rest?

With all the heated rhetoric in the prior thread, it became hard to wade through what was emotion, and what was reasonable thought. But one thing that was interesting to me was the direction at the end seemed to be the group softening their position, and wondering... Is this perhaps a common occurrance with NBB?

Of course most FP aficionados know that red inks will stain pens. This is something we tend to learn as kids, when our favorite pen was stained, and we never forget. But with a blue? I think we all agree that this is less common, although I don't think any FP enthusiast thinks it to be impossible. There will always be "bad combinations" and the Lamy combined with NBB was certainly one of those. The question is, though, is this a "perfect storm" of a bad combination, an alkaline ink w/ABS plastic issue, or should we expect NBB to stain all pens? Like red ink would, when we'd all nod our heads and say "yes you should have known that?"

So I'm wondering: what pens have folks tried NBB in? Did it stain your ink window, or finger rest? Have you flushed your pen since, and were you able to flush it out easily?

In order to keep this thread from getting heated, I'd prefer if we discuss only the three questions above.

I personally don't use many supersaturated inks, and hate cleaning my pens of them. This color is really attractive to me, though, and I'm going to try some. I'll let everyone know how it fares in my Pelikan.

loplop, I doubt you'll get any answers on this, at least not on any pens costing over $20. I'm waiting for someone who's leading the charge on how super this ink is to stick their $500-$700 celluloid pen in and report back, cause I'm not take'n one for the team.

I've stained my clear Waterman Kultur *deliberately* with BSB, just to see what removes the staining (if anything), these results are only applicable to Waterman plastics (obviously)

BSB stained both the inside cap of my Kultur, i've scibbled on the outside of the cap to deliberately stain it, and I've dipped the back of the barrel in the ink to stain it

the staining resists;

water

saliva

wet microfiber cloth

the staining was removed by;

91% Isopropyl alcohol on a Q-Tip

these tests are only applicable to the Waterman plastics, obviously

Well, I loaded BSB in my Pelikan 1000 about a week ago; yesterday, after reading the previous thread, I emptied it out to see what would happen. The ink view window was as clear as the day it left the factory. As an aside, I wouldn't have been too broken up if it had stained it--after all, I bought the pen so that I could write with it, not so that I could sit and stare at the ink view window all day.

It was stated in the old thread that Baystate Blue would "laugh at alcohol", but apparently that is not the case. It would be interesting to see if this works on SamCapote's pen, as well. If so, then at least a partial solution will have been found for the staining problem.

I think Nathan was referring to the ink on paper here, not plastic though.

Not that I am Sam Capote, but carefully reading his first post in said thread will reveal the following:

but I have tried to remove these stains with water...rinsing, rubbing with wet towel, and even Isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. It will not come off

I noticed that the staining of that yellow Lamy seemed to take the form of linear streaks, and wonder:

When Baystate Blue stains, is it "taking hold" of compromised areas of the plastic, such as scratches and molding stress lines?

Would wax on the outside of a pen, and silicone grease on the inside when ink view windows, etc., are present, prevent staining?

I'm not really talking about ink windows, how about an expensive celluloid pen. That's what talking about. I don't want my Cracked Ice or Alter Ego Etruria's section mottled in blue. And I'm sure you would have held off loading that Pelikan had you seen the post of the stain first. You got away with one, I could hear you exhale from here. Does that 1000 have a green barrel? Or at least another color than black? How about dabbing the barrel with BSB for us?

People, don't tell me your not concerned about your big money pens with this. I'm hearing all kinds of positive stuff about BSB but in $20 Kultur's. Someone load up a mint buckskin "51".

Thanks Griz.

I have locked this one too. I would like to reopen it when the results of actual experiments have been reported either from Noodler's or from anyone else that would like to PM the inky mods: macthemaths, southpaw, Ann Finley.

My reason for locking this thread is that a reasonable question has been asked. Some reasonable answers posted and I would like any further posting to be solely by people that have completed experiments.

Thanks and with apologies to those for whom this seems heavy handed.

Chris

  • 2 weeks later...

From JimmyJames:

I got a bottle of BSB yesterday and loaded it into one of the Platinum eyedropper Nathan includes with his 4.5 ounce bottles of some inks. I figured it would benefit us all more for me to do that than to put the Heart of Darkness the pen came with into it. I also love seeing colorful ink in the clear barrel.

I obviously have not yet been able to use all the ink in the barrel, but I am able to see part of the barrel not filled with ink. The ink clings to the side of the barrel longer than other inks do, but it eventually beads up and leaves clear areas. Based on those areas, I conclude that it does not stain the inside of a Platinum eyedropper pen.

And from Chemyst:

Legal Lapis stains similarly to BSB. It irrevocably stained my yellow Sheaffer school pen and took quite a bit of "common water" and scrubbing to get it off my white Corian bathroom counter.

(With apologies for taking a long time to post this - I have been busy at work and doing little jobs for Mrs macthemaths.)
