Though I do not collect Imperials, I consider them on balance (no pun intended) to be the most reliable fountain pen ever made, and they are always my first recommendation for someone who seeks a handsome, trusty, smooth-writing, stylish modern-looking fountain pen at a low cost. Has any pen model's nibs been as consistently well-finished as the Imperial's? Consider how rarely we see posts of the form, "my Imperial skips," or "my Imperial is scratchy." From a price-performance standpoint, I don't think the Imperial has any competition in the vintage or out-of-production department.

Imperials got me into pen collecting, in a way; my dad always used a black gold-capped Imperial from the '60s, and I always admired it. He still uses it to this day.

What a coincidence! I was trying to buy an eyedropper at a local pharmacy but having failed to find one, decided to pop into the tiny stationery store next door for a look-see.

I asked whether they had any fountain pens (a rarity in this part of the world) and the lady boss said yes, they only had 2 old Sheaffers....what I ended up with were 2 Imperials, both C/C fillers with medium nibs, one in hunter green and the other in burgundy and a stainless steel cap.

The green Imperial is in my pocket now, inked with Quink Black...as for the other...I'm wondering if I can modify it into an italic nib.

Will definitely be keeping an eye out for more...ah, there's just too much temptation around!

I like the basic design of the plain colored ones with inlaid nibs (I think they're on the righthand side of the picture). How much do these usually sell for now in usable condition? They're touchdowns right?

A usable Touchdown Imperial can be found from £25-£50 (more for the silver and GF models) thats what they seem to go for on ebay i've found a couple of models for bargain prices in the wild, they needed the o-rings replaced but thats pretty easy to do.

Was there an imperial in bright cadmium yellow? I thought I saw one and then my searches of E bay have been fruitless. Now that I don't see one in

your collection, I'm starting to doubt whether I saw it at all.

By the way my very first FP was a high school graduation present. I got it, looked at it and threw it in a drawer. then a few months later my one of my

best friends, who to me, embodied everything of class and elan, pulled out a fountain pen to write something. I was down to the store the next

day buying ink and looking at others... It wrote like a dream. Then I retired it for a while but got it out a few years ago and found that the section

had broken. I sent it to Richard who said that it had to be replaced and that he'd have to try and buy an old imperial and trade the sections... which he did.

The cost of the repair, the second imperial... compared to what they cost in 1966... well I don't want to know. Ok, tell me, what would a Sheaffer Imperial in

brushed chrome cost in 1966?

Hi Skyp,

I don't know the answer to your last question, but I recall that Dr. David Isaacson of (bleep).com had a cadmium yellow Imperial (or more than one...I can't remember) for sale, but as far as I know he is sold out now. A fellow Vancouver Pen Club member bought one from Dr. I. and brought it to one of our meetings. It's a very attractive colour and I wish I had bought one, too! :crybaby:

Brownieeeee, thank you for posting a photo of your Imperial collection---those are lovely pens!

I think they are great pens and you can get them on eBay for decent prices, for the most part. Thanks for shining a spotlight on a classic Sheaffer :)

One of my earliest Ebay pen purchases was a burgundy Imperial set. Nice Pens!

I LOVE my Imperials. The capped one in this picture is my most reliable pen - I keep Legal Lapis in it, and it will start up even sitting for a week. The desk pen is actually in a box - ready to go to Ron Zorn for a little bit of nib work - too slow to start at times.
