most elegant black modern pen

Recommended Posts

I'm working my way toward "elegant black..." Eventually I will get one, but in the meantime I'm saving up, and I'm interested in various aesthetics & perceptions... what makes a pen "elegant" in your opinion?

If there were a category for "most elegant black modern fountain pen," what pen would you nominate? I think of:

Caran d"ache Leman

Omas Arte Italiana

Waterman Exception Platinum (well, maybe the platinum disqualifies it...)

Sheaffer Valor (on the sporty side of elegant?)

Just curious!

For a black pen, my current favorite are the Lamy 2000 and the Danitrio Densho.

They are both simple, black and write like a dream. The Omas Arte Italiana is a really nice pen, I hope I can get buy one.

After all, it's all a question of perception, my mom thinks that my Danitrio looks like a cheap plastic pen, while she thinks a gold Montblanc is the epitomy of beauty.

I don't own one yet, but my ultimate black pen would be a Nakaya writer model.

Good luck with your black pen quest.

It's more or less a women's pen, but the all-black MB Garbo is extremely elegant looking. It has little diamonds on it and a pearl on the clip, so it is not a SIMPLE elegant.

If considering elegant meaning that it would fit in well with a tux at a black tie affair, I'd personally go for either an Aurora 88, a Talentum, or a Pelikan M805, all with silver trim.

But that's just me talkin'!

I guess that's exactly what I'm curious about... people's perceptions about what those "elegant" qualities would be...

I tend to think of elegant as (in relative terms) understated rather than overstated; on the sleek side rather than the ornamental side...

"Elegant" is the whole package... more than "simple/essential," but not as much as "excessive."

Crystal clear, right??? rolleyes.gif

I would have to agree with Ryan, the Aurora 88 loaded up with some Noodlers black or PR Midnight Blues just screams elegance. I want to put on a tux everytime I use it wink.gif

Someone mentioned the Dani Densho, as well. That would be ultimate in minimalist elegance, so it would make the perfect "after" party pen. cool.gif

Elegant to me is chrome trim with black, no gold trim for me which they love in Japan

and for some reason popular on most Conway Stewarts.

Most on here know I am an Aurora fan so, I will vote for a pen I do not own yet but hope

to this summer, which is the Omas Bologna with chrome trim. Very, very nice!

With my luck, it would leak on my tux.

I'd say a Danit Trio Mikado or Genkai. Nothing but olid black so understated it hurts laugh.gif It's one of those pens that isn't trying to be elegant it just is.

For me it would be a Parker 51 Double Jewel with a Sterling Cap.

Classical lines and a silver cap on a pen that glides on the paper...

MMMM... I just happen to have one also.... tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Beyond the "performance" of the pen (nib, weight, balance, etc..) the artistic merit of the design is what grabs me. I think in this case you are also looking forthe "class" aspect of elegance also. For that I am thinking of the following:

The Mont Blanc 149 (still a classic elegant design)

ST Dupont Orpheo -- Largest size in black chinese lacquer

The new Omas Paragon -- black of course

ST Dupont Montparnasse - black chinese lacquer (top of the line -- discontinued)

Waterman Exception -- platinum trim

Waterman LeMan100 -- black

I am sure there are many more.......

Couple come to mind...

  • Waterman Carene--not the Deluxe...there is a glossy black laq and a muted dark gray that might pass
  • Sheaffer Valor
  • Sheaffer Snork--probably the Admiral mondel
  • Parker Callenger--not the Royal Challenger--the Challenger
  • Matte Black Sheaffer Intrigue

I have carried all of these (except the Valor, which I do not own--yet) on formal and semi-formal occasions. I felt, hmmm, well dressed with them.

I have also carried a gold-filled P51 Signet, a Marlen Chigal, a grey and black Vac Standard and felt well turned out as well.

Oddly enough, carrying my sterling MB made me feel cheesy and like a wannabe. I felt like taking a pipe to an aspiring skater's kneecap or hamstringing a runner or something.

Bill, the Jersey-un who tells it like it is...

Waterman Exception Day Night, Gold or Silver trim, would be my first choice, but recently I have seen a few Hero pens on ebay for under $5, that look very classy.

How about a Sailor KoP?

Such sober appearance and perfect curves! To me it's probably the minimalist torpedo-shaped black pen par excellence. And understated elegance itself. (That is, of course, before looking at its price tag ph34r.gif ......)

If elegant is defined as "classy" such as would be necessary for a black tie event or an important Board meeting, these pens would work:

Almost any black Mont Blanc but, of course, the 149 is perfect

Waterman Black Liason

Waterman Black L'Etalon

Black Cartier Diablo (with real sapphire in cap!)

Omas Paragon or Omas Ogiva - either is classically elegant!

Sheaffer Valor
