My interpretation of the question runs something like this...

I am limited to but one pen for the rest of my life. What pen would it be.

A Parker 51 Aero. Period. Probably from 1949 or so.

If there is a different interpretation...say like this...

You are GOING to be limited to one NEW, MODERN pen for the rest of your life. What pen would you chose.

My vote would change not one whit. Only the model. Parker DuoFold. Means leaving my beloved SLEEKs, but...

Bill...who, on a different day might answer differently...

Tough poll, either the mb 149 or the söveran 1000 for what concern modern pens.

As for what concerns vintage, 1950 French Duofold Maxima Vacumatic is my choice.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I wish I could say Parker, but their low end range leaves a little to be desired. I picked Waterman as they have many quality pens under the $100 mark, I like their Hemespheres, Experts, and the others.

Lamy..... I havent had much experience with them, but I guess they have good cheap pens too.

WATERMAN WATERMAN WATERMAN!

I picked Sheaffer because they don't really make extravagant pens. If the size and weight works for you, a Legacy is a great deal.

Several of those companies make pens that are good value, but Sheaffer does the best at making all of their pens good value, from their school pens to their premium pens, so they get the nod.

FPNers...flee...hide...run for your lives! Bogus poll alert! You are being set up! Cartier? Krone? Montblanc? Best value?

Where is Sailor? Bexley? More importantly, where is Minka?

Is this best value as the world is in post-computer we-destroyed-ourselves apocalyptic times and this pen has to hold up for the rest of our lives and our children's children's lives as our only means of written communications and must withstand a damaged atmosphere, drops, makeshift repairs, and homemade ink?

Well then, of course, it would have to be a Parker "51"!

Pssst, are they gone now? Okay, it is really a Lamy...any Lamy.

One pen? I'm not sure that's possible. wink.gif

My Bexley Sheherazade would certainly be one of the first I'd grab in a mad 'you can only save a few pens' dash. Also, my Parker '51' M, an MB 146, which ever Pelikan was in my rotation... I don't think there is such a thing as 'best' - just wonderful and grand and a joy to write with. laugh.gif A description that fits any number of my pens.

Remember, you're spending your money and you're buying the pen to use it.

Did this post really need to be a poll? It might have been better served asking everyone to list their top 3 manufacturers and going from there.

I think the best is Waterman.Even though Parker is my favorite I dont think he made a great pen since the late 75.The duofold is an exception but its only one pen and Waterman today is making allot of good solid and beautiful pens.

Respect to all

Well, *I* thought it did... It's sort of the opposite of most overrated and perhaps easier to get a handle on. Who knows, it may help me narrow down the next pen I'll buy.

Sorry for the omissions. I borrowed the list from the "most overrated" poll running in parallel with this one and didn't think to review it. I certainly should have added at least the ones you listed.

  • 1 year later...

I see it this way (I mean as to that what you asked):

For me it is definitely Pelikan. I do have the motto, credo, idea, wish... blah blah blah... to get a good pen from each of the good and/or well-known companies before expanding in one single company....

BUT: I have only 2 pelikans and I want 3-4 more, the models are all listed, the reasons being for (1) size (M320), (2) nib (M1000), (3) weight (M9XX), (4) originality (cities and/or LEs).

Pelikan offers the best value IMO today and at least (if not the best) service today.

YES, things have changed in the last 10-20-50 years, but as re TODAY, I'm sticking to Pelikan.

So, I said it.
