I wasn't much into blue inks before, but something happened - I think it was Diamine Royal Blue - and made me see the world of blue ink in a different way. Now I am on a quest for the perfect blue.

So far are my favourite "clean blues" Diamine Royal Blue and Diamine Majestic.

Favourite with a turquoise/green streak is Diamine Mediterranean

Favourite greenish blue/dark turquoise blue is Diamine Steel Blue.

I was surprised to see that it was such a big difference between Midnight and Majestic. Majestic is more vibrant and saturated - a true majestic ink. Vibrant, deep blue. I love it.

What do you think of Pilot Blue/Black? I might order some for my VP, I really like the blue. Maybe you should try it. It's a bit washed out in dry pens, but in wet pens it's great!

Awesome comparison - thank you! I am amazed at the wonderful variety of blues in the fountain pen ink world - from staid button down to laughing out loud and every nuance in between.

I think the Pilot Blue Black is a bit dull - alright, but nothing more. On the other hand I'm not that fond of Pilot Blue either.

I'm surprised to see that your Diamine Midnight is different from this one: http://www.fountainp...howtopic=120910

Perhaps it's due to different scanner?

I don't now, actually. I guess my pen is dryer and narrower. It is actually a little less vibrant (but still a beautiful blue) than in Jared's scan. I don't find the difference so big - more due to slight scanning differences and pen differences.

Ah !! I am glad to see someone else is seeking the perfect blue !

I just ordered several Diamine blues this afternoon. So far Diamine Royal Blue, Diamine BlueBlack, Diamine Tropical Blue, and Noodler's Blue are some of my favorites. I am trying to find a Diamine blue that is close to Noodler's Blue (which I dislike since it misbehaves and I just don't like putting problematic inks in my pens).

Thanks for this comparison, I'm thinking of getting a couple of Diamine blues, I'm leaning towards your favorites as well (Royal, Majestic and Tropical). I wonder though--how are they with feathering? Sometimes our office uses low quality paper.

well, it would depend on how broad your nib is, and how wet ...

I have some Fine and Extra Fine nibs and have no problem on cheap printer paper although they are wet writers. But that is not the case when I try a Medium.

Frankly, I think your problem will be more nib rather than the Diamine inks. I have similar problems with all inks when I go beyond Fine with all my pens.

Oh, that's a relief. I was beginning to get scared off the Royal Blue because of the feathering comments which I did not read about on the other blues. I normally use nothing thicker than a fine, so hopefully I'll be safe. Thanks!

Dandelion-

What pen did you use for the comparison? Did you just dip, or fill? Did you use the same pen fo each colour (it looks like it) If so, how long did it take to clean out the pen and re-load!!?

I used different pens - I did this swiftly with pens that I had already got inked up. I also wrote down which pen I used - you find it below the ink brand and hue. ;) Take a look again... and find that Diamine Steel Blue was written with a Pilot M90 F nib and that the Turquoise was written by a Carry Tac with a M nib....

This evening I'm perfectly happy to have the blues. Thank you, Dandelion.

I might try a Diamine or Majestic.

Thank you! I'm also glad to have that kind of pleasant blues.

  • 4 weeks later...

Great comparison. In your quest for the perfect blue I would definitely suggest trying out Visconti Blue and Pilot Iroshizuku Asa-Gao.
