Asa-Gao and Med Blue are not dark, are they? I thought OP was looking for "darker eye searing" blue. IF that's the criteria, how's about PR's DC Electric Supershow??? Or Diamine's Majestic? Both dark blues and supposedly "electric"

I REALLY like the Asa-Gap, just not near $35 a bottles worth.

I hadn't intended on this becoming a Baystate Blue thread, but it is fightly madly towards that direction as

BSB just seems to be the closest to a stick-your-tongue-in-the-electric socket blue there is.

I've spent a couple hours tonight pouring over ink reveiws and ink threads and this is what I've come up with

for EYE SEARINGLY POPPING blues along the lines of BSB but without near the ink deliquency issues.

How would you all rate these as the closest to BSB? (Oh, and I do tend to lean more towards medium/wetter

nibs.)

1) Diamine Saphire

2) Visconti Blue

3) PR DS Supershow Blue

4) PR American Blue

Thanks in advance,

...then ther's Mont Blanc ballpoint blue -- broad point to show the color. It stands out against all the other ballpoint blues I have.

Now if Mont Blanc fountain pen ink could be just like their ballpoint, I'd sign up for a gallon! However, the fountain pen ink (also known as "real ink") seems a bit darker. Still wih more power than most blues, but missing that special something.

Of course, I don't know just how bright you want.

I've just bought some dip pens so I can test inks without loading any of my fountain pens...and then having to unload and clean out the inks I dislike.

Good luck, and let us know your findings.

(Yes, I like the mixture, but that's too many inks for me.)

I happen to love BSB, but have already written a little soliloquy on it's evil tempting and destructive behaviour in another thread.

Tried Visconti Blue - dark yes, not a genuine contender

Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue - again dark, but not the brightness of BSB

Asa-Gao - has never met my expectations, but I must admit it's getting there (just not really for the money)

Diamine Sapphire Blue - the closest I've found. There is a touch of purple I think in this one, that makes it just a little more on the money than the others (and it won't ruin your pen)!

If you are at all worried about "waterproofness," American Blue is not suitable. From personal experience, it washes _completely_ away at the merest hint of moisture. I do not know about Supershow blue, but it would likely have the same problem.

J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir is sometimes recommended as a BSB replacement. Considering that Herbin inks have a reputation for being "washed out," I think that Eclat de Saphir would surprise those who haven't tried it with how bright the color is. I prefer it to other, "regular" blues like Waterman because of the extra pop that it has. I think that Herbin doesn't really deserve the "washed out" reputation, as this color and several others I have tried are actually quite vibrant (in my opinion). Also, ES is probably the best smelling ink that I have ever come across!

Interesting that here is a thread with a side by side writing that tends to support your Diamine Saphire suggestion.

VERY close but even here you can see that radioactive glow of BSB that the Diamine (and probably no other ink) doesn't have.

It's very interesting to me, and I'd like someone to comment on the two different side by side scans in this thread. Now, I know the nib and paper make a big difference, but one scan shows the Saphire to be MUCH lighter than the BSB while

the second side-by-side has them appearing much closer to each other.

Visconti Blue is pretty intense, though I don't know about "eye searing", and a dark, ultramarine blue. I think Omas Blue is reported to be intense as well. My Diamine Sapphire wasn't very intense at all.

1. I suggest PR DC Electric Blue.

2. The Iroshizuku inks are available at Jet Pens for $22.50 ea. If you buy $25 of product from them, there's free shipping. So you don't have to pay $35 for a bottle.

I think the PR American Blue really does pop! :yikes:

I love Visconti Blue, but would not consider it a darker blue. Also not terribly eye popping. Eclat de Saphir is rather eye popping IMHO but it is even lighter than the Visonti Blue. I also like PR Midnight Blues, definitely darker. A very nice blue.

Here's a side-by-side of Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue and Visconti Blue (as requested privately). Both are pretty darn eye-searing. Visconti is my all-around favorite blue, very well-behaved.

I have 32 different blue inks.

Aside from BSB, Visconti blue is the brightest dark blue ink I have.

Of the inks mentioned in this thread, I have: Diamine Mediterranean Blue, Aurora Blue.

Well, based on this threads responses I called James at Peartree about placing a sampler order.

That's when a nasty plot complication reared it's oogley head. They are out of the top two out of

three contendas, J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir and Visconti Blue and have no idea when they'll be reordering.

I did plug in substitutes and order a sampler still the same, but these two inks were 2 of the 3 most

likely (I think) to fit the bill. (The other being Diamine Saphire which is on the sampler.)

I have a post in WTT/B about procuring some samples of Eclat de Saphir and Visconti Blue.

If you think you may be able to assist me with that, here's the post with what I have to offer.
