Looking for purple ink

Recommended Posts

Does anybody have a suggestion for a nice, rich purple ink that comes in cartridges that won't clog up my Montegrappa Micra? I tried PR tanzanite and it didn't get along too well with the pen.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Might check the forum Inky Thoughts, as well as the forum for ink reviews. I know there is a Violet some folks like, but I can't remember the maker, and I don't know if the cartridge will fit your pen.

Another suggestion is to refill your old cartridges using bottled inks. Pear Tree Pens has an ink sampling program that you might check out if you decide to give that a shot.

Waterman Purple is the most reliable.

Omas Violet is one that some people like; it's a little washed out for my personal taste.

J. Herbin Violette Pensée

If you are into violet I second Violette Pensée, if you are looking more into a purple then also from Herbin I suggest Poussière de Lune.

Waterman Purple has very good flow for sure, only question is if the color suits you and which paper you'll use it on.

Herbin inks are less saturated and more watery in my experience so they have lots of shading. But less intense colors.

Another one I like is Caran D'Ache Storm. Whereas Poussière de Lune is a purple that tends toward burgundy, I'd say Storm tends toward blueberry jam, if that make sense :P In my pen Storm is slightly more saturated than Poussière de Lune.

Of all the color mentionned Storm behave the best in my Moleskine. The worse is, and by far Waterman Purple which both feathers and bleeds through a lot. This is with a Medium nib medium wet.

Hope this helps :)

Lamy AL-star - 1.1 (Omas Violet)

Nakaya Celluloid Mottishaw F Flex (PR Arabian Rose)

Omas Bologna - M (Noodler's Golden Brown)

Pelikan M620 Grand Place - Binder XF/XXF Flex (Noodler's Navajo Turquoise)

Stipula 22 - 0.9 (Waterman Florida Blue)

Waterman Patrician - M (Waterman Florida Blue)

Thanks for the input. I just purchased an Escridor from Caran D'Ache and was intrigued by that little insert they have on their inks. I might just look into the color you recommended. I'll check into the Herbin inks as well. All this feedback surely helps.

In addition to the J. Herbin suggestions above, I would add the new Montblanc violet (which is actually quite a dark purple) to your list. It's a rich looking, smooth flowing ink.

I've always liked Montblanc inks. I didn't know they came out with a violet. I will check that as well.

I use Private Reserve's Purple Mojo. I haven't had any problem with it in any of my pens. YMMV.

Hi,

I just got a bottle of Noodler's Concord Bream...watery and ghostly. I wouldn't recommend it.

The MontBlanc violet is very nice. It's more of an auburgine color and is a bit different than some of the other purples you might have tried. It's one of my favorites.
