Lamy Safari

Sounds like you got the rare Savanna Green - congratulations! :)

Hi Hans-Peter -- odd, it's not the Savanna Green now that I've checked your link. It doesn't really look like charcoal either. It is more like a very, very dark green. Maybe it's a charcoal that has faded?

Yep, I looked at it again in very bright light. I think it's just a charcoal color that has aged a bit. The clip has brass showing through it, as the black coating has scraped off in places. Yeah, it's a little beat up, but that means it's been a "knock about" pen that has many serviceable years ahead. :)

Tom,

I have that exact same pen and bought it for the same reasons you did, for a good "knock about" pen. I used to carry four Parker "51"s in a cigar case in my purse. But I got to thinking one day if I lost my purse or that cigar case I would lose four "51"s at once! :crybaby: I got a sick feeling thinking about it and promptly removed two of them and stuck my blue Safari in their place.

I like writing with the Safari and feel that for the price it can't hardly be beat. My son has a charcoal Safari and that's his school pen. I think it's a great pen for kids who want to use a fountain pen at school because if they lose one, it's not so much of a tragedy. Maybe your daughter will acquire yours since she picked the color out?

Good idea on that, Rosey. It would indeed be quite a tragedy to lose 4 Parker "51"s in a single shot. I think you made a wise choice on an inexpensive dependable pen. The Safari is really versatile. I think it'll be the next pen that I give to my niece. :D

The Safari only takes the Lamy cartridges or converter....

Safari is able to take PArket Vector cartridge and convertor (whcih is even cheaper)

I'm confused... will the Safari take the Parker cartridges? Because Parker carts are readily available in Manila, and I just ordered 2 Safaris with converters -- one for my son and the other for me. It would be great for my son, a university student, if they take the Parker carts too.

The Parker and Aurora carts actually do fit the Safari, the Aurora a bit better at the mouth than the Parker. It is a tight fit in the barrel, the Parker cart always gets stuck in the barrel end when unscrewing the section. But they work! :happyberet:

Does anyone know if this is also the case for the Al-Star? I know that the Parker cartridges fit in some Lamy pens (like the Safari) and not others (like the Studio and CP1).

Thanks.

Thanks so much for the clarification, saintsimon! :D

  • 1 month later...

The Safaris usually come with a M nib as standard.

In the post last night when I got home was a 1.5i (stub italic) nib. The nibs are a doddle to take off with a bit of sellotape. Instructions are on The Writing Desk site.

Look at the difference in output!!

My scrawly writing

It almost makes the pen look exciting!!

Don't forget there are three stub nibs available, 1.1i, 1.5i and 1.9i I would say that the 1.5 equates to a broad, so I will assume that the 1.1i equates to a medium and the 1.9i to a wallpaper brush :P

Where are you all finding these italic nibs? I couldn't find one, so ended up sending an ef nib to be reground into a cursive italic. I'm hoping they can get it down to a .5mm. It probably costs more than just buying one outright, not to mention turn around time.

Swisher pens offers all Lamy nibs at a reasonable price, no affiliation, just a satisfied customer. They are fun to write with and in my experience really smooth and reliable. I use a 1.1 for most everyday writting.

Best,

Michael

I got mine from a seller on eBay, but you can get them from www.thewritingdesk.co.uk

I paid £4.00 ($8) - delivered, although The Writing Desk sell them for £3.50 ($7) plus delivery.

You should be able to get them from any decent Lamy dealer though

Is it possible to convert this to an eyedropper? If so, has anyone done it?

But, do more than write

It would be noticeably difficult to convert the Lamy Safari and its metal bodied cousin the Al-Star, as both of these pens have openings cut into sides of the barrels that allow you to see the ink in the convertor/cartridge. If you take a look at this link, you'll see the openings in the barrel:
