Noodler's Pasternak? Nyet!

I finally got my bottle of Noodler's Pasternak, a "Bulletproof" Noodler's ink. I shook the bottle to make sure this paint-like ink was well mixed, and loaded up a couple of pens. Very very pale. That's two "very's" as in too pale.

 

Below are quick scans that look about right on my monitor. Writing below the swatches were (1) Lamy Vista, fine; (2) Pelikan M605 w/.5mm Binder italic cursive; and (3) Sailor 1911M, fine.

 

I guess I'll use Pasternak when I'm writing something uncertain and tentative...

*Sigh* Without labeling anything, I would have guess the top two inks were the reverse of what you have them labelled based on what I see published on the Pendemonium website.

They're in the right order... LB is my current favorite ink due to generous flow - but it is a little less saturated than I'd like. Some describe it as "chalky" or "faded." Might have to drop in a little Florida Blue...

A matter of taste, but I think the Pasternak is a rather nice shade, even if pale. I'm sort of into "pale" ever since getting hooked on Lexington Gray.

 

You could add a little Noodler's Black to the Pasternak to give it a little more heft. I bet it would make a very nice, waterproof blue-black.

You could call it "Black Boris." Or, for those old enough to remember Rocky and Bullwinkle, "Boris Badanoff."

 

Naming the mixes is as much fun as making them ...

 

(Still working on Dirty Larry and Ondine's Curse. Down most of last week with pneumonia, which didn't keep me from posting but did keep me in bed -- not a good place to be mixing ink.)

"Doctored Zhivago" is fairly inevitable, eh? The eponymous ink leavened with a dash of Akhmatova (or corrupted by an infusion of Bank Note Green) to energize the muted green undertones while maintaining bulletproofness. Think of it as the movie version of Nathan's original.

Oh my goodness! That was my favourite cartoon as a kid. Guess I'm getting on in years, huh? I'd love a series of inks named after those characters.

 

Bill, there is a pneumonia vaccine, maybe you should get one. My husband and daughter each got it, as they both are asthmatic and prone to such illnesses. It's a one time deal too. Take care.

Yep, I'm a 60-year-old diabetic. Got the pneumonia vaccine three years ago, it's supposed to last for five. I asked the doctor what the deal was, how come I got pneumonia anyway. She said it must have been viral. However, she did give me an antibiotic, which makes no sense. My lungs didn't clear until Sunday, the last day of the course of antibiotics. I did have some kind of ear and throat infection going on, maybe that's what the antibiotic was for. Beats me. My wife now has the same cough and congestion that I had, but no pneumonia. Fun, fun, fun. I'm glad we live where it's warm.

Got the sample of El Lawrence today, got to set aside some lab time this week to figure it out and come up with a good substitute mix. My original was not so far off, but now that I have the real thing I can see the flourescent yellow/brown undertone in there.

"Pneumovax II is a pneumococcal vaccine that contains extracts from 23 of the most common types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.". There are literally thousands of species of bacteria and viruses that can cause lower respiratory tract infections (penumonia). The vaccine just decreases the chances of the worst kinds.

At least what I got wasn't too bad, or we caught it in time, or maybe the vaccine actually did some good. 4 or 5 days to clear the lungs (and a couple of days after getting strength back) doesn't seem so severe, compared to stories I've heard.

On the subject of ink mix names, I keep meaning to try Iraqi Indigo with Visconti Blue and hoping it will be good, purely so I can call it Iraqi Viscount.

I'm bumping this thread because I just retried some Pasternak and now I like it. I don't think the ink changed while sitting in my drawer for almost two years, but I think my taste has. At least that's the verdict in the current (night) light. I'll take a good look when the sun comes out and may even post another scan this weekend. I just feel bad for sliming it.

But I also have a couple bottles of ink I bought a couple years ago and didn't like and now do, and my story is that it's the ink that has changed, not my eyeballs ...

Well, actually... there was a little request by this guy, melnicki, in the traveling journal I just received asking to see some Pasternak. The ink, not the writer. So reached back into my ink drawer and filled up my Falcon to accommodate the request. One can't really judge an ink on its own -- I can't anyway. I have to look at its effect on the whole page. I notice that on a bright white page, "softer" inks, rather than blend into a "girlie" pastel, makes the page itself less harsh and easier to read. I think this would make a wonderful bluish-grey too, and in fact, I'm preparing to drop a little blob of Noodler's Black into it to create a grey with some dimension that might look good on a bright white paper. I have some Clairefontaine pads that haven't been getting much use.

 

Part of the fun of mixing inks is that you get to name them. Depending on how it turns out, I'm thinking, "Berkeley Vegan Doughnut Blue-Grey." What do you think?

you just reminded me that i need to check out the vegan donuts made in berekely (can you believe i haven't yet?!!), but i'd be pretty sure they're not blue. How about Berkeley Post-Treesitter Blue? (now that you can see the sky since they cut down those old oak trees and chased the hippies out). Or "Microbiology Mess Blue". "people's park free denim blue"? I got it... "Coldest Summer Blue"!!! That's it... It probably looks like the san francisco sky, anyhow!!! "Pasternak Black" does have a nice snap to it, though.
