This is Journal #94 "Patina - Batik"

Its hand-dyed batik.

I like it for its abstract rendition.

Another one from the Japanese series ...

This is Journal #89 "Kimonos" ....

It has a nice collage of different kinds of Kimono prints ... :)

Pictured with a Sailor 1911M Brown Mozaique , a smallish pen for those days when you feel you need something smaller.

Its a very smooth writer even though the nib is hard as nails as is commonly known.

Hmmm, don't the needles get pushed backwards into the greyboards ? hmm1.gif

They used to. I dipped the needles in Henkel's UHU glue before inserting them so they lasted a while before finally submitting to the resistance of the material. Last version I made (the pics are from an earlier version) uses sandwiched needles with a stop made of board reinforced with glue so the needles can't go backwards. Also, in the last version, the edge of the board is filed into a V shape to achieve maximum fitting to the craddle's sloped surfaces.

Nevertheless, making [at least] the comb out of wood, would solve the needle problem.

Before I forget it again, how do you make the namecard slots in the pockets? Do you use a cutting die? I'm intrigued!!!

Ah .... ! I see ...

Hmmm ...

I work the other way round, I mark the spine of the signatures, then pierce the marks from outside.

I have to do this bcos I don't want to trim the bookblock after its completed, Its just too tedious , I am guessing ...

No the namecard slots are not punched out in one operation.

The namecard slots are marked out in pencil first.

I mark the three points of that triangular shape.

The 2 far corners are then punched out (by hand) using the smallest metal hole punch I can find. Its 2mm diameter.

The slots are then cut by hand.

This is a sketch done recently after seeing a calendar featuring lighthouses from around the world.

Drawn in my favourite sketching journal.

About 8" x 8" square format.

Done with a Rotring 2mm clutch lead holder.

5B lead.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7420.jpg

I intend to use these sketches on my white series of journals.

This time in A5 size.

Its a first time for me so I wonder how it will work out.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7421.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7422.jpg

I am undecided whether to do a plain black and white or have a tinge of colour here and there.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7424.jpg

This is the larger sketch redrawn to 'magnify' the same drawing on the cover page. Trying to add in some humor ...

This lighthouse is an old man holding a lantern on a precarious outcrop...

Over the years , there was added a lightning conductor.. and a windsock (for whatever reason I don't know ..)

... and of course there must be red .. in his poncho ...

The sketches are now photocopied onto watercolour paper by Herlitz 150gsm.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7429.jpg

I decided to use the sketch in such a way as to form the Front and rear covers.

Front

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7426.jpg

Rear

The bigger sketch

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7428.jpg

Somehow the photocopy doesn't stay on the paper. :hmm1:

Probably bcos of the fibres.

The graphics comes off easily. :( :bonk:

So i had to trace over every line, re-inking with a super fine Sakura pigma Micron 005 felt tip pen that has archival ink.

I am thinking of spraying over with a fixative. Not sure if it will work.

I am gonna try watercolour washes, thats why the watercolour paper.

I will also try a black and white version.

The A4 sized watercolour papers are now glued onto the A5 sized coverboards.

... and I added some washes .... from ECOLINE watercolours and with kid's watercolour coloured pencils by LYRA ...

They are starting to look promising ... ;)

Front and rear covers.

The colouring is not finished yet.

Front cover

Rear cover

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7434.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7433.jpg

This is the bigger sketch which is not fully coloured yet.

I'd probably use it for one of the flyleaves, either front or rear.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7446.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Lighthouses/DSCF7447.jpg

The black ink is indeed waterproof and helps to bring out the sharp edges to the drawings. :)

I would think the sketches would look rather different in their original pencil lines. But I guess I have to wait to see this. :hmm1:

The photocopy couldn't bring out the subtle shading and hatching from the pencil work.

I re-hatched some parts as can be seen above.

The next step would have to see the sketches carefully protected by spray fixative.

Any suggestions welcomed ... :)

As usual , using the double-needle coptic stitch.

Since its a 'white series' journal, the stitches were white .

I redrew this sketch to a larger scale.

I decided to place it in the middle of the journal.

All the sketches were sprayed over with KRYLON fixative , matte. To protect against moisture and stains.

TMLee,

I have recently reviewed this thread (there are a LOT of pages, all good stuff) looking for how you attached the pagemarker ribbon on open spine books. I cannot find it. I will soon be putting together another one and I want a page marker. From several posts, I can see from the pictures two holes that the ribbon goes into and out of, but no picture of how it is secured. Can you fill in the details? Thanks.

Sorry to hear that you are "losing steam". This thread has been my inspiration for many things. I did put in a pagemark in a sermon notebook by your instructions and then I figured out another way. I sewed the pagemark as part of one of the sections. I punched one hole above and fed the ribbon out that hole. I have a number of things to try next in improving the projects.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Sometime ago, I offered to make a set of journals using this print of a map.

I finally proceeded to complete it seeing that the paper was left unused for far too long.

Here's the matching set of 3 journals. Pictured with the Stipula Etruria Alter Ego in <0.9mm> stub.

The trio are :

Journal #62 "Capetown" in A6 size

Journal #62A "Capetown" in A7 (mini) size

and Journal #62B "Capetown" in A5 size.

I decided to use a 2-tone cord for the stitches of #62B becos both the dark brown and natural colours are found on the cover map print.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2062%20Capetown/Journal%2062B%20A5%20Capetown/DSCF6369.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2062%20Capetown/Journal%2062B%20A5%20Capetown/DSCF6367.jpg

The 2 cords alternate on each sewing station.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2062%20Capetown/Journal%2062B%20A5%20Capetown/DSCF6365.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2062%20Capetown/Journal%2062B%20A5%20Capetown/DSCF6366.jpg

This method then gives the overall final effect of the dark brown colours at both ends, ie the last sewing station at the bottom and the ribbon pagemarker at the top which is also a matching dark brown.

Some closeups. I think that map covers for journals seem to lend an air of quiet elegance to them.
