Use Your Cell Phone As A Digital Loupe

Many current mobile phones have big, high-resolution color screens as well as good-quality cameras. When i got my iPhone about a year ago, I thought it would be great to use it as a digital loupe of sorts, with a screen several people could view at once -- a handy capability when looking over a pen for sale and pointing out features and flaws. And, of course, anything viewed this way could instantly be captured and saved, emailed, etc. The obstacle was the camera lens, of course -- no macro capability.

 

So I tinkered in my shop and I jury-rigged a prototype the night before last year's DC pen show, and it attracted a good deal of interest as I used it while strolling the floor. This year, I had a refined product, and it was a big hit at the show.

 

It's a bit difficult to show it in action as a loupe, but these captures give some idea of the level of enlargement and detail that's available:

Eda - It should work with a BlackBerry Curve, as there is no sliding cover over the camera, I believe.
